Ground Cherry: Best Wishes

붉은 꽈리들이 화폭을 가득 채우고 있다. 톡 건들면 터질 것처럼 부풀어 오른 그 껍질 안에 무엇이 들어있을지 궁금해진다. 세밀한 붉은 선들이 질서 있는 조화를 이루면서도 쏟아질 듯 탐스럽게 제 모습을 뽐내고 있다. 꽈리 열매에서 자연의 근원적 의미를 발견하여 독특한 동양화 양식으로 표현하는 이애리 작가의 초대 개인전 『Ground Cherry: Best Wishes』가 LA에 위치한 ROSEGALLERY에서 열린다. ● 몇십 년 전, 지금처럼 놀 거리가 풍부하지 않았던 때에 아이들은 산으로 들로 다니며 장난감을 찾아다녔다. 꽈리도 그중 하나였다. 꽈리의 껍질을 벗긴 다음 동그란 열매를 살짝 찔러 안에 든 씨를 뽑고, 풍선을 불듯 입으로 바람을 불어 '꽈르르' 소리를 내며 가지고 노는 것이었다. 한국어로 '꽈리'라는 이름은 여기에서 나왔다. ● 재미있는 소리를 내며 가지고 놀기도 하고, 먹을 수도 있고, 보는 것만으로도 심미적 만족감을 주는 이 꽈리는 전 세계의 어느 누구에게나 기발한 영감과 즐거움을 준다. 특히 꽈리는 복주머니와 비슷하기도 하고 어둠을 밝히는 초롱불을 닮아 동양에서 행복이나 행운, 그리고 성공을 상징한다. 또한 아이를 품고 있는 엄마의 모습처럼 껍질 안에 작고 단단한 열매가 들어 있어 다산을 뜻하기도 한다. 작가는 이렇게 다층적인 행복의 의미를 가진 꽈리를 그려낸 작품으로 많은 이들에게 복을 전하고자 한다. ● 이번 전시의 제목인 『Best Wishes』는 '행복을 빌며'라는 뜻으로 보통 편지의 끝인사에 쓰인다.이 세상 구석구석에서 각자의 삶을 충실히 겪어나가고 있는 모든 사람들에게 작가가 보내는 행복의 메시지가 닿기를 바라며, 이 편지를 마친다. ■ 이애리

"The red ground cherries fill the canvas, their shells swollen as if ready to burst with a satisfying pop when touched. You will be curious about what lies within those inflated husks. The meticulous red lines form an orderly harmony, yet teasingly flaunt their appearance, ready to spill out. Artist Lee Ah-Ree explores the intrinsic meaning of nature in ground cherries, expressing it in a unique Eastern painting style in her solo exhibition, 'Ground Cherry: Best Wishes,' curated by Gallery Iam at LA ROSEGALLERY. ● Decades ago, when entertainment options were limited, children roamed around the hills and fields searching for toys. Ground cherry was one of these toys. Peeling the husk, poking the round fruit, blowing air like inflating a balloon, creating a 'quack' sound – that was the playful joy. The Korean name '꽈리' (kkwari) originated from this activity. ● This cherry, producing amusing sounds, edible, and aesthetically satisfying to behold, provides whimsical inspiration and joy worldwide. Resembling a pouch or an illuminating lantern in the dark, it symbolizes happiness, luck, and success in Eastern culture. Like a mother holding a child, the small and sturdy fruit inside the husk signifies prosperity. The artist aims to convey these layered meanings of happiness through her depictions of ground cherries. ● The exhibition's title, 『Best Wishes』, commonly used in farewell messages, conveys the artist's message of happiness to everyone experiencing life in every part of the world. ● As we conclude this letter, may the happiness within it reach all those faithfully navigating their individual journeys, with best wishes. ■ AERI LEE
