High Touch

빛과 유리를 매체로 탐구를 이어가는 신봉철 작가는 한국예술종합학교를 졸업 후 뮌헨으로 건너가 Academy of Fine Arts에서 학위를 마치고, 현재 독일에 거주하며 세계를 무대로 활동하고 있다. ● 전시명 『High Touch』는 시간과 종교, 철학과 예술의 풍부한 감성 렌즈를 통해 삶을 재조명하고 정화하는 것을 의미하는데, 본 전시를 통해 작가가 만들어낸 새로운 감성과 감각의 가능성을 보여주고자 한다. ● 작가는 부모님의 화훼 농장에서 어린 시절을 보내며 색과 자연에 대한 변화와 리듬을 자연스럽게 체득할 수 있었다. 이후 유럽에서 표현주의와 구성주의, 미니멀 아트를 직접적으로 배우고 경험하며 시각 예술의 주요한 측면을 작업으로 발전시켜왔다.

독일 표현주의 작가들의 작품에 사용된 색을 분석해서 유리에 입히고, 빛을 투사하여 벽에 투과된 그림자 빛으로 원작을 재생산, 재해석하는 「Cubes & Stripe」 시리즈와 인용한 시구나 노랫말을 깨진 병 조각으로 만들어 텍스트의 기호와 기의를 충돌시키고 텍스트를 새로운 맥락으로 끌고 들어가는 작업인 「Broken Letters」는 작가의 대표 시리즈이다. ● 특히 「Cubes & Stripe」 작업에서는 빛과 색, 공간의 상호작용을 통해 미니멀 아트의 핵심 요소들이 더 입체적이고 순수하게 구현되는데, 미술사에서 영감을 얻은 작품에서 모티브를 잡아 유리를 재료로 정제된 몸체를 만들고 색과 함께 자유롭게 구상한다. 사각기둥, 삼각기둥의 직각인 표면과 미학적 명석함이 돋보이는 색 배열은 작가가 감각한 세계의 최대치와 보편 사이의 균형을 만들어낸 결과다. ● 「Broken Letters」는 작가의 언어에 대한 관심에서 시작된 작업이다. 유리 파편으로 제작된 문구와 인용문은 형태와 의미 사이에 갈등을 유발하고, 이 갈등을 통해 언어는 새로운 의미를 획득하고 성장한다. 메시지 자체가 작품의 중심이자 표현의 수단으로 특징지어진 위의 시리즈는 깨진 병의 날카로운 유리 조각으로 인해 위험해 보인다. 그러나 동시에 색과 함께 유기적인 형태로 인해 싱그러운 나뭇잎이 비유적으로 떠오르며 양가적인 심미적 체험을 가능하게 한다.

이번 전시에서는 각 시리즈의 대표작들과 모터를 이용한 회전하는 프리즘 작업, 2023년 신작까지 두루 살펴볼 수 있다. 매체 간의 조화로운 상호작용으로 파생된 다채로운 색의 스펙트럼과 미학적으로 극대화된 아름다운 빛의 공간을 본 전시를 통해 오감으로 경험해보시길 바란다. ■ 서정아트

Shin Bongchull is an artist who uses light and glass as his medium of choice to explore his artistic vision. Shin graduated from the Korea National University of Arts and later completed his degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Currently, he resides in Germany and works around the world. ● The exhibition title 『High Touch』 suggests a process of re-examining and refining life by exploring its deeply emotional aspects through the lenses of time, religion, philosophy, and art. Shin's intricate compositions, made from glass and light, coupled with a rich spectrum of colors, present new aesthetic possibilities. ● Shin's formative years were spent amidst the vibrant changes and natural rhythms of color on his parents' flower farm. Later on, during his sojourn in Europe, he delved into the artistic movements of Expressionism, Constructivism, and Minimalism, which played an integral role in shaping and refining his visual artistry. ● Shin is best known for his signature series, Cubes & Stripe, in which he examines the colors used by German Expressionists, applies them to the glass, and projects the light onto the wall to reproduce and reinterpret the originals. His other series, Broken Letters, features broken bottle fragments of quoted poems or songs, colliding symbols and signs of the texts and drawing them into a new context. ● Shin's Cubes & Stripe series embodies the fundamental principles of minimal art in a more dynamic and purer form through the interplay of light, color, and space. By drawing inspiration from art history, Shin deftly employs glass as a medium and creates a refined form as he freely experiments with color. The right-angled surfaces of the square and triangular columns, along with the dazzling array of hues, demonstrate Shin's skillful ability to strike a balance between the maximal and the universal, which reflects his perception of the world. ● Broken Letters is a series that was born out of Shin's interest in language. Using glass shards to fashion phrases and quotations, Shin creates a tension between form and meaning, imbuing language with fresh meanings and significance. In this series, the message itself serves as the focal point as well as a powerful means of expression. Although the works may appear dangerous with their sharp glass fragments, the organic forms and colors figuratively conjure up images of fresh leaves, lending to an ambivalent aesthetic experience. ● 『High Touch』 by Shin Bongchull will feature representative works from each series, as well as rotating prisms that use motors, and new works from 2023.
