갤러리FM는 오는 5월 27일부터 6월 13일까지 서수영 작가의 개인전 『달항아리, 매화를 품다! 2021』을 개최한다. 작가는 작업에 관한 꾸준한 연구를 통해 한국적인 회화 영역을 넘어 달항아리의 한지 입체 조형의 시도와 드로잉, 매년 업그레이드된 신작을 선보여왔다. 전작에서 한지로 만든 조선의 명품 백자대호 달항아리 입체 작품을 선보였다면 올해 신작 『달항아리, 매화를 품다! 2021』은 그동안 쌓아온 회화 경향과 살짝 다르고, 화면의 형태나 구성이 한층 세련된 느낌이다. 이는 한국 전통문화의 소재를 현대회화로 끌어들여 왕실의 보물을 재해석해 우리 문화의 우수성을 알리려는 생각들이 반영된 결과물이다.

이번 신작 중에서는 특히 달항아리를 2~3개 겹쳐 놓은 구성이 독특한데, 그 안에 매화와 어우러져 표현된 서책과 촛대, 봉황, 모란 등의 조선 시대 왕실의 유물이 눈에 띈다. 작가는 현대적인 감각으로 입체적이며 두터운 한지의 질감을 부조 형식으로 표현하며 광물성 석채물감이 전하는 마티에르의 밀도가 작품의 완성도를 더한다. 또한 원화와 같이 전시되는 색지 위에 거침없이 표현된 드로잉은 일 획의 또 다른 작가만의 개성을 느낄 수 있다. 작가는 전통회화 물감인 돌가루 석채를 주로 쓰며 금 활용을 병행해 한국적인 것을 현대적 관점에서 재해석해 절제된 동양적 미감을 선보인다. 매화와 나비가 화면 가득 백자 달항아리와 엇비슷이 어울려 있으며 동양과 서양회화의 장르를 풍성하게 아우르며 독특한 회화 언어로 새롭게 해석하고 있다. 이번 전시에서 금빛을 머금은 달항아리 가득한 전시 공간 속에서 펼쳐지는 현대와 과거의 시공간을 이어가는 무한한 상상의 세계를 경험해 보시길 기대한다. ■ 배서인

Gallery FM is pleased to present 'The moon jar with Ume blossoms! 2021', a solo exhibition of artist SEO Sooyoung from May 27 through June 13, 2021. Seo has shown the attempts of sculpture and drawings of moon jars beyond the Korean painting area through steady work and upgraded new works every year. If the sculpture of Joseon white porcelain moon jars made of Korean paper was presented, this year's new work 'The moon jar with Ume blossoms! 2021' is slightly different from the painting trends that have been accumulated, and the shape and composition of the screen feel more sophisticated. ● It results from the idea of reinterpreting the treasures of the royal family by bringing the subject of Korean traditional culture into the modern painting and promoting the excellence of Korean culture. ● Among the new works this year, the composition of two to three overlapping moon jars is unique, and the royal relics of the Joseon Dynasty, such as books, candlesticks, phoenixes, and peonies, are notable. The artist expresses the thick texture of Korean paper in the form of relief with a modern sense and the density of Matière delivered by mineral color adds to the perfection of the work. Also, the drawing, which is expressed on the colored paper, can feel the artist's individuality. Seo mainly uses a stone powder with colors of traditional painting and gold at the same time to reinterpret Korean things from a modern point of view to show an understated oriental aesthetic. Ume blossoms and butterflies are similar to the White porcelain moon jars filled with screens, and they are interpreted as a unique form of the painting, encompassing the Oriental and Western painting genre. Through this exhibition, we hope you experience the infinite imaginary world that continues the modern and the past time in the space that is filled with the moon jars with the color of gold. ■ 배서인
