비상구는 없다 project ● 'no emergency exit' project ● 작년 이맘때 서울시 마포구에 위치한 한 주상복합 아파트에 관한 뉴스를 접했다. 이 고급 아파트는 소셜 믹스 정책이 도입된 곳으로 일정 부분 임대분양이 포함되어 있다. 이곳은 1층부터 10층까지 저층부에 임대 가구를 배치하고 11층으로 올라가는 비상계단을 막는 구조로 설계되어 있다. 만약 저층부에 화재가 나더라도 임대 가구에 거주하는 사람들은 비상계단을 통해 옥상으로의 탈출이 불가한 것이다. 이는 생명이나 인권보다 부가 우선시되는 현상을 보여주는 사례다. ● [비상구는 없다]는 조물주 위의 건물주라는 세속적 표현이 만연하고, 집이라는 거푸집으로 사회적 계급을 나누고, 위치가 정해지는 우리의 씁쓸한 현주소에 관한 프로젝트다. 이 프로젝트를 통해 한 번쯤은 우리사회의 사회적 폭력과 구조적 차별에 대해 고민하고 사유하고자 하는 바람이다.

집이라는 거푸집을 통해 사회적 관계를 파악하며 이해하는 상황으로써의 집은 우리에게 다양한 고찰을 요구하는 측면도 있다. 카라반, 맥난민 외에도 그저 부동의 건물에 한정될 수 없는 당대 인류가 처한 문제의식을 도출시킬 뿐만 아니라, 하나의 사회적 의사로써 작동하기 때문이다. 물론, 인간적 상황은커녕 현실적으론 난민의 조건을 상징하는 명사라는 것도 나의 작업에는 포함된다. 따라서 나에게 「창으로 만든 집」은 복합적인 의미를 지니는 것이다. ● [비상구는 없다] 프로젝트로 사람들의 삶의 문맥에 개입함으로써 삶의 질을 개선하는 데 중요한 이슈를 제공하길 바란다. 또한, 우리에게 실종된 것이 단지 집이라는 장소와 공간만은 아니라는 독백이 관람자들에게 깊이 침투되길 기대한다. 궁극적으론 오늘날 우리가 구가하고 있는 번영이나 일상의 행복이 얼마나 허약하고 위험한 기반에 기대고 있는가를 카드로 만든 집처럼 「창으로 만든 집」을 통해 자각하길 희망한다. ● 나는 나의 예술 활동이 미학적인 측면에만 머물지 않고 사회전반의 문제와 대면하여 우리의 상상력이나 반성을 촉구함으로써 현실의 삶에 참여할 수 있는 계기 혹은 무대가 되었으면 한다. 어쩌면 이번 전시의 궁극적인 목적도 여기에 있다. 집이라는 기호에 투사된 당대 현안으로 일종의 '사회적 예술'로 위치하길 바라는 것도 또 하나의 목적이다. ■ 육효진

No Emergency Exit Project ● Last year in 2019, I heard the news about a Multi-used High-rise Apartment in Mapo-gu, Seoul. This luxury apartment is where social mix policy is implemented and certain floors are available for rental. (*The social mix policy is designed to prevent the gap between social classes from widening by allowing residents of different social and economic status to mingle with each other by creating general instalment sales and public lease systems in one apartment complex.) It has arranged rental homes from the first to the 10th floors, and emergency stairs from the 10th to the 11th floor are blocked. If a fire breaks out on the lower floors, it means that people living downstairs cannot escape to the rooftop through emergency stairs. This is an example of a phenomenon in which the rich are prioritised more than life and human rights. ● 'No Emergency Exit' is a project that represents our unfortunate phenomenon in which the secular expression of "Landlord above God", dividing the social classes by the form of a house, and establishing social position. Through this project, I wish to share my thoughts on the social violence and structural discrimination in our society with the visitors. ● We understand social relations through the form of a house, and other aspects of it require us to consider various things. This not only elicits the problem consciousness of human beings, which is bound by mere lifeless-buildings such as migrant caravans and McRefugees, but also works as a social intention. My work includes not only the various situations that humans are going through, but also the metaphorical expression of the noun "Pain," which represents the situation of refugees who are losing their homes. Therefore, the work 'A House made of windows' means a lot to me. ● I hope this exhibition will provide an important issue in improving the quality of life by intervening in the context of people's lives, and also hope that my monologue will penetrate deeply into the audience, not just places and spaces that are missing to us. Ultimately, I hope that the audience will realize how weak we are today with the structure of home and whether we are missing our daily happiness through 'A house made of windows'. ● I hope my artistic activities will serve as an opportunity to intervene in realistic life by facing social problems rather than simply aesthetic aspects. And perhaps the ultimate goal of this exhibition is to be a kind of 'social art' as a contemporary issue projected under the symbol of home or house. ■ Yook, hyojin
