오 장미여! Oh Rose!

스페이스 윌링앤딜링은 2020년 9월 10일부터 27일까지 이수경 작가의 개인전 『오 장미여!』를 개최합니다. 한국 현대미술의 대표적인 중견 작가로 손꼽히는 이수경 작가는 2017년 베니스 비엔날레 본전시의 초청작가로서 참여했고, 국립현대미술관에서 개최한 2012년 올해의 작가상 및 수 많은 국내외의 비엔날레 및 미술관과 갤러리 등의 러브콜을 받으며 세계 무대에서 활발한 작품 활동을 해 오고 있습니다. 이수경 작가의 초기 작을 살펴보면 영상, 설치, 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 매체를 소화해 왔음을 알 수 있습니다. 다양한 장르적 혼성은 서로 다른 개별 문화간의 혼종된 모습과 각 환경을 인식하는 타 문화의 태도 등에 대한 실험적인 방법이기도 했습니다. 작가의 대표적 작업 시리즈인 『번역된 도자기』시리즈는 2002년 부터 현재까지 도자기 파편을 주 재료로 한 조각적 오브제 형식입니다. 이 형식은 이수경 작가의 대표적인 방법론으로서 소개되고 있는데, 서로 다른 형태의 도자기 파편들이 상호 조응하면서 하나의 형상으로 조형되어 나가는 모습을 드러내고 있습니다.

이수경 작가는 또한 「매일 드로잉」 시리즈를 꾸준히 제작하고 있습니다. 개인의 정서적 안정과 치유를 목적으로 시작한 행위를 예술 활동으로 전환시키면서 무의식의 세계를 상징적이면서고 솔직하게 드러낼 수 있는 매개로 삼았습니다. 이는 양손을 사용하여 공간과 시간의 동시성을 증폭시키면서 이미지 속에서 확장되는 이면적 상황을 연출하는 퍼포먼스로 연계할 수 있는 단초의 역할을 하기도 했습니다.

이수경 작가의 페인팅 시리즈 또한 꿈과 무의식, 다른 차원의 풍경 등의 현실속에서 보이지 않는 시각적 경험을 바탕으로 이미지화 하는 작업 세계를 본격적으로 소개하고 있습니다. 이번 전시 『오! 장미여』에서는 장미꽃을 소재로 하는 다양한 초현실적 풍경의 이미지가 드로잉과 회화 형식으로 소개됩니다. 이수경 작가에게 '장미'는 현재라는 제한적 시간성에서 벗어나 무의식이 펼쳐내는 예측 불가능하고 기이한 세계로 이끄는 상징적 대상이기도 합니다. 이번 전시에서 이수경 작가는 무의식의 한 영역, 다른 차원의 시공간으로 들어가기 위한 통로에서 만난 '장미'를 모티브로 따온 여러 장의 드로잉과 회화를 선보입니다. ■ 스페이스 윌링앤딜링

Space Willing N Dealing will present Oh Rose!, a solo exhibition of work by the artist Yeesookyung from September 10th to September 27th 2020. Yeesookyung, a well-known figure in Korean contemporary art, was invited to the core exhibition at Arsenale of the 2017 Venice Biennale and was awarded the Korea Artist Prize 2012 organized by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA). She is active in her artistic practice and has participated in international art exhibitions at numerous international art biennales, museums, and galleries. The early works of Yeesookyung show us that the artist employs multiple mediums such as video, installation, and performance. This hybridization of different genres is an experimental method to explore hybrid forms among different cultures and cultural attitudes to recognize each environment. Her renowned work, the Translated Vase series from 2002 to the present takes form as a sculptural object comprised of ceramic fragments. This form, unique to the artist, reveals the process wherein different shapes of broken ceramic are co-dependent of one another to form a single shape. ● Yeesookyung also continues to work on her ongoing series, Daily Drawing. The artist transforms an act initiated with the purpose of psychological stability and healing into an artistic activity, symbolically and genuinely using it as a vehicle to reveal the world of the unconscious. ● Yeesookyung's painting series also introduces the aspects of her art practice of imaging the invisible as the series is based on visual experiences not seen in reality, in phenomena such as dreams, unconsciousness, and landscapes from different dimensions. The exhibition, Oh Rose!, will present images of various surreal landscapes, all containing roses, that take shape in the form of drawings and paintings. For the artist, the rose is also a symbolic element that leads to an unpredictable and uncanny world that unfolds via the unconscious, beyond the limited temporality of the present. In this exhibition, Yeesookyung presents several drawings and paintings inspired by the rose that she encounters in a passageway to enter into other dimensions of space-time, the realm of the unconscious. ■ SPACE WILLING N DEALING
