믿음의 번식 Saint Breeders

아뜰리에 에르메스는 이수경의 또 다른 시도를 선보이는 전시 『믿음의 번식』을 개최한다. "믿음의 번식"이라는 제목에서 연상되듯이, 전시는 하나의 작업이 다음 작업으로, 그 작업이 또 그 다음 작업으로 이어지면서 회화와 조각, 영상 등 다양한 매체를 통해 구현되는 이수경의 '의식의 흐름'을 따라 펼쳐진다. ● 작가 스스로 최면을 통해 전생과 그 전생의 전생, 그 전생의 전생의 전생으로 역행을 거듭하여 무의식 속으로 깊이, 더 깊이 들어가면서 마주했던 장면들을 회화로 재현해낸 「전생 역행 그림(Past Life Regression Painting)」연작(2015)과 '바리공주', '서왕모(西王母)', '타라(Tara)'와 같은 민담이나 신화 속 인물들이 각자의 힘들고 고단한 삶의 무게를 잠시 내려놓고 깜빡, 달콤하게 잠들어 버린 순간을 포착한 「모두 잠든(All Asleep)」연작(2015)을 통해, 이수경은 최근 몇 년간 이어지고 있는 '본디부터 그러함(本然)'에 관한, 그 '본연' 속에 자리잡은, 우리 안의 '영성(靈性)'에 관한 관심을 슬쩍 들추어 보인다.

이러한 이수경의 관심은 이번 전시를 통해 새롭게 시도하는 「하얀 그림자(White Shadow)」(2015)나 「그곳에 있었다(You Were There)」(2015)와 같은 작업으로 이어지면서 확장된다. 「하얀 그림자」는 작가가 타이난(Tainan)과 니가타(Niigata), 강진에서 열린 전통적/지역적/종교적 행사를 방문하여 촬영한 영상작업으로, 행사가 진행되는 축제의 들뜬 분위기 속에서 자신만의 음악과 춤에 몰입한 누군가의 존재를 비추는 카메라의 시선이 인상적인 작업이다. 이 작업은 지난 6월에 타이페이 현대미술관(MOCA Taipei)에서 열린 개인전에서 선보였던 「그림자 춤(Shadow Dance)」(2015)으로, 그리고 「휘황찬란 교방춤(Dazzling Kyobangchoom)」(2011)이나 「쌍둥이 춤(Twin Dance)」(2012)과 같이 전통 무용 퍼포먼스를 설치작업의 일부로 수용했던 시도로 거슬러 올라가는 관심사의 연장선에 자리잡고 있다. 눈에 보이지 않는 본연의 모습, 그 안에 자리잡은 영성의 존재를 드러내려는 이수경의 시도는 아득한 시간 저 너머 언젠가로부터 이어져 온 '춤'을 매개로 자신의 몸과 호흡을 되찾는 바로 그 순간에 유의미한 지점을 확보한다.

『그곳에 있었다』는 전시의 제목인 "믿음의 번식"을 강하게 떠올리게 하는 새로운 프로젝트이다. 작가는 두 개의 돌에 금박을 입혀 그 중 하나는 자신이 보관하고, 다른 하나는 강진 소재 백련사 주지 스님을 통해 사찰에 봉헌하고 주지 스님으로부터 두 개의 돌을 받는다. 이 두 개의 돌에 다시 금박을 입힌 작가는 그 중 하나를 자신이 보관하고, 나머지 하나는 백련사 주지 스님의 지인에게 전달한다. 금박을 입힌 돌을 받은 백련사 주지 스님의 지인은 이 돌을 자신의 사찰에 봉헌하고, 작가에게 두 개의 돌과 함께 자신의 지인을 추천하게 된다. 작가로부터 비롯되어 작가의 지인과 그 지인의 지인, 그 지인의 지인의 지인으로 이어지는 돌의 교환은 끊임없이 새로운 관계가 생성되고 이러한 관계가 확장되어 가는 과정을 은유한다. ● 전시 『믿음의 번식』은 이수경이 지속해 온 관심사들을 연장하는 동시에 그것들을 또 다른 방식으로 변주(變奏)해 나간다. 오랜 시간의 흐름 속에서 모였다 흩어지기를 반복해 온 나 자신의 몸과 호흡에 관해, 우리들 안에 존재하는 성스러움에 관해, 그리고 그 모든 것들이 예술의 언어로 구현되는 방식에 관해 다시 사유할 수 있는 계기를 이 전시는 마련하고자 한다. ■ 아뜰리에 에르메스

Atelier Hermès exhibits 『Saint Breeders』 hinting at Yeesookyung's unprecedented attempt for something new from September 18 to December 20, 2015. As the title 『Saint Breeders』 resonates, the exhibition unfolds with one piece of work leading to another which in turn leads to another, showcasing Yeesookyung's "stream of consciousness" through such diverse media as painting, sculpture and video. ● Yeesookyung's interest in the inherence and our inner "spirituality" that lies in the inherence for the past several years is hinted at through her works. The scenes she has confronted through hypnosis—past life, the past life of the past life and the past life of the past life of the past life—as she went deeper into consciousness through repeated regression into the former life are represented in her 「Past Life Regression Painting」 series (2015). The 「All Asleep」 series (2015) grasp the moments where such figures in folklores or mythologies as "Princess Bari," "Xi Wang Mu" and "Tara" recharge themselves with a short sound nap, loosening their struggling daily burden for a while. ● Her interest has now expanded to her newly attempted works: 「White Shadow」 (2015) and 「You Were There」 (2015). 「White Shadow」 is a video work she shot by travelling to traditional, regional or religious events held in Tainan (Taiwan), Niigata (Japan) and Gangjin (Korea). The angle of the camera is impressive as it projects the existence of somebody immersed into one's own music and dance in the middle of a vibrant atmosphere in the festivity. The work lies in the stream of her interest tracing back to 「Shadow Dance」 (2015), which was introduced through her solo exhibition held at MOCA Taipei last June, and to her attempt to embrace traditional dance performances as a part of installation works such as 「Dazzling Kyobangchoom」 (2011) and 「Twin Dance」 (2012). Yeesookyung's attempt to reveal the inherent facet that is invisible and the spirituality in there secures a significant point in time when Yeesookyung retrieves her body and breaths via "dancing" that has been inherited from a long time ago. ● 『You Were There』 is a new project reminding one of "Saint Breeders," the title of the exhibition. After gilding two stones, she keeps one herself and dedicates the other to a head monk of Baekryeonsa Temple in Gangjin. She then receives two stones from the head monk. She gilds these two stones again, and keeps one herself, and gives the other to an acquaintance of the head monk. His acquaintance (probably a head monk of another temple) that received the gilded stone dedicates the stone to his temple and gives two stones to Yeesookyung while recommending his acquaintance again. The exchange of stones passes on and on among a circle of acquaintances starting off from Yeesookyung generates a new relationship on end and there is a metaphor of the process where such relationships are expanded. ● The exhibition 『Saint Breeders」 carries on Yeesookyung's continued interest and does a variation for it in different manners. The exhibition seeks to trigger viewers to mull over once again about their body and breaths that have been converged and scattered amid the flow of a long period of time, about the holiness that exists in us and about the way all these are represented in the language of art. ■ Atelier Hermès
