Medium Rare

유년시절을 외국에서 보낸 박경근 작가의 작업은 서울이라는 도시, 특히 청계천, 을지로와 같은 도심지와 그곳에서 일하는 사람들에 대한 호기심과 질문들로부터 시작한다. 작가는 사라져가는 산업화 세대의 유교적 사고와 충돌하는 자신의 감정을 투영하여, 청계천 공장의 녹슨 기계들과 그것을 움직이는 사람들을 바라보았다. 10년 전 청계천 일대에 스튜디오를 차리고 작업을 시작한 그는, 2018년 청계천 공장들의 철거와 함께 청계천을 떠났다. 그곳에 머무는 동안 청계천의 생산 시스템을 활용한 여러 작품들을 제작할 수 있었다. 압축된 한국의 70년대 기초산업 기술은 작품의 소재가 되고 (청계천 메들리, 2010), 그의 작품 제작과 형식의 중요한 요소로 자리 잡는다.

박경근 작가는 결과물에 대해 완벽한 계획을 세우지 않는다. 작품의 기능적 측면에 더 집중하다 보면 매끄럽게 숨겨야 할 전선이 튀어나오기도 하고, 그렇게 노출된 전선 한 뭉치는 작업에 감정을 불러일으키는 도화선으로 기능하기도 한다. 그의 작업들은 대량생산 시스템의 결과물과 다르게 제한된 예산, 융통성을 가지고 임기응변하는 청계천 생산 시스템을 따르면서 그 형식적 특성을 드러낸다. ● 박경근의 영상 프로덕션과 조형작품 제작 방식은 도시의 산업 구조와 밀접하게 연관되어 있다. 서울의 특수한 생산 환경은 작가에게 많은 영감을 주고 작업 내용과 형식을 구축하는 기반으로 작용하였다. 외부인과 내부인의 시선을 동시에 가질 수 밖에 없는 작가의 배경과 태도는 언뜻 사회를 바라보는 객관적 관찰자의 시선처럼 보일 수 있다. 하지만 그의 작품은 두 시선 사이에서 충돌하는 감정으로 만들어진 내면의 결과물이다. 작가의 내적 충돌은 그의 영상과 설치작품들의 근원이 되었지만, 한국근현대사나 기술문명비판 같은 소재의 무게에 눌려 상대적으로 잘 거론되지 않았다. 어쩌면 내면 속 소심한 망설임, 유치한 유머나 비겁한 모습은 그의 노트 속 작은 드로잉들로 남아 있는 듯 보인다. 본 전시는 작가가 공개하지 않았던 기록들을 여과없이 드러내면서, 이전 작업들을 다시금 바라볼 수 있게 하고 박경근의 작업에 좀 더 친숙하게 다가갈 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.

상업화랑은 『미디엄 레어』전시에서 그동안 공개되지 않았던 드로잉과 함께, 사진, 조형물, 그리고 새로 제작 중인 영상작업 일부를 소개한다. 전시 제목인 『Medium Rare』는 다양한 의미를 포함한다. 매체와 수단을 의미하는 미디엄(medium), '진귀한', '덜 익은' 과 같은 의미를 뜻하는 레어(rare)를 통해서 발전하는 작가의 가능성을 비유하여 설명한다. 즉, 고기 굽기 상태의 'medium rare'라는 표현처럼, 온전히 익지 않은 작가의 내면을 들여다볼 수 있다. 이번 전시를 통해 다큐멘터리, 역사, 또는 사회담론으로 설명되었던 작가의 작품들을 재해석하고, 새로운 예술적 의미를 발견할 수 있을 것이다. 박경근 작가의 작업실을 방문해 아직 "덜 익은" 작품들을 보며 대화를 나누는 기분으로 편안하게 감상하기 바란다. ■ 상업화랑

Among the many descriptions of artist Kelvin Kyung Kun Park so far, the Identity of a "Seoul Based Artist" is one of the most important for him. Artist Kyung Kun Park says there are art works that have to be done in Seoul. In other words, the works only can be made in a specific city: Seoul. The city of Seoul is an indispensable element for him in order to begin and complete the work. In particular, the characteristics and historical significance of regions such as Euljiro, Cheonggyecheon, and Jongno in Seoul are significant factors and sources of inspiration for the artist Kyung kun Park. ● The coexistence of the heterogeneous elements of a city makes the place of the city even more attractive. On one side of Seoul, there are modern skyscrapers, high-tech subways, free wi-fi, shopping malls, and luxury department stores. On another side, there are spaces that retain the culture and history of Seoul from the past to the present. The city of Seoul has a history, atmosphere, and vibrant stories differentiated from that of major cities in the western countries. The video work shown in the exhibition at Sahng-up Gallery illustrates various types of people living in Seoul, as well as the diversity that can be found and experienced in South Korea, especially Seoul, and the people having an organic relationship with the background of all over Seoul. ● In general, the process of completing a piece of work is not conveyed in detail to the public. Although "archive works" often appear in the contemporary art scene, they are limited to works pulled from archives, not drawn directly from the collections of active artists. On the huge screen showing the works of Kyung Kun Park, we see also the city of Seoul along with the history of South Korea from the artist's perspective Kyung Kun Park's works have been presented at international biennales, museums, and film festivals. The exhibition at Sahng-up Gallery zooms in on the large and small encounters on his journey as an artist. Personal drawings that have not been disclosed until now, and evidence of the agony accompanying the process of making films and video works that have already been shown at national art museums and film festivals. ● Kyung Kun Park does not start with a concrete plan before making art works. He focuses more on what can bring out the function of the material as it is, not on a well-made design. In doing so, wires that need to be hidden smoothly pop out, and a bundle of wires can function as an important part of the work. His choices made in the the moment and use of materials, rather than the smooth and commercial images made by mass production, help to create crude but structural works that are different from other artists'. It is not a perfect plan, but the story behind the result – one that is completed in response to the situation, imagination, and senses faced while filming and editing the video at a moment in time – will help you to understand the artist's works more deeply. ● The title of the exhibition "Medium Rare" does not convey only one meaning. The Sahng-up Gallery hopes that through this exhibition, the audience will be able to recognise the meaning of the process behind the finished work. You will be able to discover the value of not only the finished work, but that one step of artistic development overlaps with another to create meaning. Moreover, "medium" – describing both an artistic medium and a means to an end – brings our attention to the artist's choice of medium and its meaning; and "rare" – having associations with value and undercooked food – brings focus to discovering the possibilities of his works as the developing artist. In its suggestion of a 『medium rare』 steak, the exhibition helps you to better underatand the meaning of the process of creating a perfectly completed work through the steps and traces that exist on the other side of something completed. ■ SAHNG-UP GALLERY
