위상적 회화 Topological Plane

토폴로지 가로지르기 ● 외할머니는 동절기 버선에 솜을 붙여넣었는데, 솜을 대고 바느질하여 넣은 버선 면을 뒤집으면 누빈 솜은 반대쪽 면에 자리 잡았다. 할머니의 무릎을 베던 시절 목격한, 안과 밖이 뒤집히는 이 신기한 최초의 위상에 대한 기억으로부터, 소년 시절, 둥근 굴렁쇠들이 눈 깜작할 사이에 서로 끼워지고 어느새 또 걸린 고리들이 빠져나오는 마술을 구경하면서 나는 위상적 변환의 매력에 사로잡혔다.

이렇게 토폴로지적인 경험은 우리 일상에서 얼마든지 일어난다. 시간 또한 '토폴로지적 장(field)'이라 상상해보자. 가령 우리는 시간의 장을 지나는 강의 시간표 같은 것을 짤 때 그 사이사이에 다른 일들을 배치한다. 누군가는 아주 순조로운 흐름 속에 일을 이끌게 되지만, 누군가는 갇힌 시/공간 안에서 중첩/낭비할 뿐만 아니라 몇 갑절의 노고를 무릅쓰며 힘들게 이행해야 한다. 경복궁 근정전 뜨락에서 만났던, 오히려 효율적 위상으로 엮어지는 비정형의 바닥돌들이 엮여지며 교묘하게 불규칙이 이어지는 신기한 이음매들의 연쇄처럼 어떤 사람들은 큰 계획 사이사이 삐걱거리면서도 그 길을 이어간다.

우리 신체 자체도 토폴로지컬한 구조를 띄고 있다. 입과 항문을 연결하는 통로도 사실은 몸 안으로 뒤집혀진 몸 밖의 현상일 뿐이다. 그래서 음식물 섭취와 배변이 가능한 것이다. 즉 임신부의 자궁조차 몸 밖의 현상인 것이다. 따라서 잉태와 자연분만이 가능하다. 마치 '클라인 병'처럼, 주둥이가 몸 안으로 엮이는 형국이 우리의 인체인 것이다.

뿐만 아니라 토폴로지란, 이를테면 컴퓨터나 도시 지하철처럼 복잡한 기능들을 교묘히 제어하고 계획하고 설계하는, '조직 설계'에 영향을 미치는 중요한 현대적 기하학일 뿐 아니라, 한 집단의 재정정책에서부터 작금에 겪고 있는 집단 감염에 매끄럽게 대처하는 방역 정책 수립에 이르기까지 지하철 노선처럼 유연하게 적용되어야 하는, 그렇게 우리의 사회적 삶에 개입하여 사고와 판단을 좌우하는 것이기도 하다.

나는 오랜 시간 이런 '고무판 기하학'의 확장/수축의 운동성에 매료되었고, 이러한 '유동하는 장'의 경험과 개념을 내 작업에 끌어들이고 반영하고자 했다. 이는 작업을 통해서, 지시적 언어 시스템의 위계를(hierarchy) 거치지 않는 토폴로지컬한 상상과 운동의 미끌어지는 경험, 경직된 유클리드적 이성의 매개나 중재 없이 맛볼 수 있는 생동하는 자극(Sensation)과 맞닿으려는 욕망 때문이다. (2020년 3월) ■ 홍명섭

traversing topology ● When I was a child, my grandmother would prepare for the cold winter by sewing extra layers of cotton wool onto her traditional Korean socks. I remember lying with my head in her lap, watching in wonder as she turned the sock inside out to reveal the cotton padding on the inside. This was my first marvelous exposure to the revelation of topology. Growing up, I was continuously fascinated by such topological transformations, which were like watching a pair of trick rings link and separate in the blink of an eye. ● Such topological experiences can happen at any time. In fact, isn't time itself another type of topology? Although we may not realize it, topological thoughts and considerations are deeply embedded in our everyday lives. For example, today's students must creatively fit an array of different appointments and tasks in between their full schedule of classes. While those people who are adept in topological thinking can manage their appointments and obligations in a smooth flow, other people have more difficulty planning and carrying out our tasks, expending unnecessary energy and effort by falling into the trap of closed time and space. For me, the embodiment of efficient topology is the spacious courtyard in front of Geunjeongjeon Hall at Gyeongbokgung Palace, which is formed by a seamless network of stones with different shapes and sizes. Like the amazingly smooth connections between these irregular stones, some ● people are able to consistently move ahead by stumbling from one task or project to another. ● Our physicality also has a topological structure and function. For instance, the path connecting the mouth to the anus is actually an external phenomenon experienced through introversion to the body, via eating and defecating. The same can be said of a woman's womb and reproductive system, which is what makes pregnancy and birth possible. In a sense, our body is like a Klein bottle, with the mouth woven back into the interior. ● Indeed, topological structures are prevalent in almost every aspect of contemporary life, from the financial policies of various institutions to the designs of complex computer systems to the procedures for preventing epidemics from spreading through society. Such structures should be intricately yet flexibly linked, like subway lines, so that they may serve as a thought system governing judgment and reason by intervening our daily lives. ● For a long time, I've been fascinated with the expansion and contraction of 'rubber sheet geometry,' and I've tried to reflect and incorporate my own experience and concept of flexible topological fields in my artworks. By enacting or engaging dynamic sensations that transcend the mediation or arbitration of rigid Euclidean reason, I use my works to explore the slippage of topological movements (both real and imagined) in ways that are not mediated by the instructive hierarchy of language.
