코드화된 공간 Coded Space

코드화된 공간(Coded Space) 이라는 주제로 열리는 이번 전시는 강은혜 작가가 지난 몇 년간 미국 필라델피아, 뉴욕, 뉴저지, 볼티모어, 미시간 등지에서 해왔던 한글을 이용한 기하학적인 패턴 설치작업들을 기록한 사진과 영상물에 대한 아카이빙 형식의 전시이다. 미국과 유럽에서 작업 활동을 하면서, 외국인들에게는 한글 형상을 이용한 패턴이 언어가 아닌 기하학적이고 추상적인 시각예술로서 받아들여지고, 읽을 수는 없지만 어떤 의미와 메세지를 담고 있는 기하학적 패턴이 설치된 공간 안에서 관람객들이 흥미로워하고 즐기는 모습을 보았다. 그러한 경험들을 통하여, 앞으로 한글이 한국에서 뿐만 아니라 세계적으로도 추상예술분야, 인테리어 디자인 분야 등 다방면에서 무한한 가능성과 잠재력을 가지고 있다는 확신을 가지게 되었다. 한글이 지닌 기하학적인 아름다움은 비율과 나눔의 개념이 적용되어 여러 건축요소와 접목될 수 있기 때문에, 작가는 추상예술로서 기하학적인 한글을 발전시켜 나가고 싶다는 꿈을 가지고 작업을 해나가고 있다. 한글이 언어로서의 우수성 뿐만 아니라, 시각적으로 기하학적인 추상미술의 한 형태로서, 순수조형 소재로서 표현 가능성을 접할 수 있는 기회가 되기를 바란다. ■ 서울시청 하늘광장 갤러리

With the theme of "Coded Space", this exhibition is an archive-style display of photos and video clips that chronicle the geometric pattern installation work using Hangeul, or Korean alphabet, which Kang has done over the past few years in Philadelphia, New York, New Jersey, Baltimore and Michigan. When working in the U.S. and Europe, she saw visitors enjoying exhibition spaces where geometric patterns using Hangeul were installed. They regarded the patterns as geometric and abstract visual arts, not foreign letters, while thinking the patterns contain a certain of meanings and messages even though they cannot read it. Through these experiences, Kang has become convinced that Hangeul has unlimited possibilities and potentials not only in Korea but also globally in abstract arts and interior design. Thinking that the geometric beauty of the Korean letters can be combined with various architectural elements by applying the concept of ratio and sharing, she is working with a dream of developing Hangeul geometrically as an abstract art. This exhibition will be an opportunity for visitors to see Hangeul not only as the excellent letters, but also its possibility of being used as a form of visually geometric abstract art. ■ SKY PLAZA GALLERY
