기억의 방 Room of Memories

문혜정의 『기억의 방』안에는 무엇이 있는가. ● 높이가 거의 삼 미터에, 폭은 일 미터 오십에 이르는 커다란 연필 드로잉이 벽에 걸려있다. 작품 앞에는 그림 속 오브제들이 이리저리 놓여 있다. 그림 속 오브제들의 시점이 조금씩 다르고, 배경의 묘사가 생략되어 무중력상태에서 부유하는 사물들을 보는 듯하다. 바닥에 놓여 있는 실재 오브제 대부분은 하얀색으로 칠해져 그림 속 오브제들이 밖으로 뛰쳐나온 것 같은 착각을 하게 된다. 어느 것이 실체이고 어느 것이 이미지인가. ● 실재 이 오브제들은 그녀가 독일 유학시절 길거리에서 우연히 발견한 것들이다. 당시 어떤 상태였는지는 짐작할 수 없으나, 그녀가 그 위에 흰색을 덧씌웠다. 그녀는 그것과의 첫 만남의 느낌을 담아 놓고자 한 것이 아닐까 싶다. 그녀는 그들을 한국까지 가지고 와서 지금껏 애지중지하였다. 그녀는 문득 그들을 한자리에 모아 놓고 그렸다. 왜?

그녀는 이순耳順을 지나 종심從心을 향해가는 한 가운데 서있다. 그녀는 단순히 추억에 잠기고자 하지는 않은 듯싶다. 오히려 그 도상에서 그녀는 아마도 꼭꼭 숨겨둔 첫 만남의 느낌을 끄집어내 다시 한 번 확인해보고 싶었지 않나 싶다. 그녀는 수십 년 전 낮선 독일에서 가졌던 '생산적인 고독'의 시간을 또다시 갖고자 하는 것이 아닐까. 그러한 시간을 통해 그녀는 변함없이 자신의 삶과 작업을 성찰하며 보정해가고자 하는 듯하다. (2018) ■ 박춘호

What can be found in Hye-Jung Moon's Room of Memories? ● A huge pencil drawing, reaching three meters in height and 1.5 meters in width, hangs on the wall. In front of the drawing, the objects in the drawing are placed here and there. The viewpoints of the objects in the drawing are all different and since there is no description of the background, the objects seem to be floating in zero gravity. Most of the actual objects on the floor are painted in white, which creates an illusion of the objects in the painting jumping out of the canvas. Which is the reality and which is the image? ● The objects were found in the streets by Hye-Jung Moon when she was studying in Germany. We cannot guess what she was feeling at that time, but she covered the objects in white, which makes us presume that it represents her first meeting with the objects. She cherished them, even to bring them back to Korea and to keep them so far. She then, decided to gather and paint them. What must have been the reason behind her actions? ● Moon has passed the age of sixty and is at the middle of going on to the age of seventy. She does not seem to simply reminisce. Rather, she could have wanted to take out her first encounter, which she had kept hidden, and consider it, once again. Perhaps she wanted to take time for "productive solitude," which she experienced in Germany, decades before. Through such time of solitude, she may be thinking about her life and works, and continue revising, as she has always done. (2018) ■ Choon Ho Park
