에칭과 드로잉으로 건져 올린 일상의 용기들- 예민하고 감각적인 선묘로 이루어진 홍윤의 작업은 에칭과 드로잉으로 이루어졌다. 둘 다 선묘 중심의 회화이자 단색조 그림인데 차이가 있다면 에칭은 금속 표면을 얇게 파고 들어가 이미지를 남기는 네거티브 회화이고 반면에 드로잉은 얇은 종이의 단면 위로 올라와 서식하는 포지티브한 회화인 셈이다. 물론 그 높낮이의 차이란 지극히 낮다. 그 차이 없음 안에서 이미지는 묘하게 환생한다. 에칭은 단단하고 차가운 금속판을 녹여서 이룬 상처가 머금은 잉킹이 흔적을 남기는데 압력에 의해 종이의 피부를 눌러서 이룬 이미지는 가상이 아니라 실재하는 존재성을 은연중 각인시킨다. 생각해보면 에칭은 저부조 이기에 조각적인 요소도 자리하고 있다. 회화와 조각이 한 몸 안에서 버티고 있는 것이다.

홍윤은 에칭과 드로잉이란 방법론을 통해 자신의 일상에서 접한 사물들, 특정 용기들의 피부를 조심스레 떠내고 있다. 그것은 흡사 자신의 일상과 그 일상의 공간을 채우고 있는 물건들을 응시한 것의 수집이나 채록과도 같다. 그러니 그림 그리는 행위는 무심히 일상을 바라보고 그 순간의 현대성을 담담하게 기술하는 일이 된다. 지금 이 순간의 일상, 현대성을 목도하고 있는 주체의 현존성이 그림의 주제가 된다는 것이다. 그것이 실은 미술의 모더니티이기도 하다.

작가가 찍고 그려낸 일상의 익숙한 용기들이다. 그것들은 대부분 특정 음식물이 담겨진 병이나 종이, 플라스틱, 비닐용 제품들이다. 작가는 이를 조감의 시선으로 응시하고 있다. 원근이나 배경이 지워진 자리에 사물들만이 지도처럼, 상형문자처럼 놓여져 있다. 그런가 하면 마치 냉장고 문을 열고 그 안에 담겨진 여러 물건들을 죄다 바깥으로 끄집어내 늘어놓은 듯한 형국이기도 하다. 그러자 개별적인 사물들은 그것 자체로 군집을 이루어 인간의 세상을 모조하고 있기도 하다. 여기서 주변을 채우고 있는 무수한 사물들, 여러 용기들의 외부를 따라 그려 나가는 일이란 그 존재 자체를 어떠한 편견 없이 받아들이는 무심함의 시선이자 이를 통해 주어진 일상을 수용하면서 일상이 그것 자체로 또한 매우 의미 있는 것임을 방증 하는 일이기도 하다. 아울러 음식물이 담긴 다양한 용기들은 그것 자체로 매력적인 오브제이자 흥미로운 미적 대상이 되기도 한다. 미술의 소재가 특정 대상에서 풀려나 모든 것이 될 수 있었던 것 또한 현대미술이 이룬 성과다. 동시에 레디메이드가 미술이 되고 미술이 레디메이드의 외피를 추적해 나가는 일은 동시대 현대미술에서 지극히 보편적인 일이 되었다. ● 이처럼 홍윤은 비근하고 범속한 용기들의 외형을, 그 실루엣을 지극히 예리하고 섬세하게 거둬들인다. 에칭과 드로잉이란 수단을 통해 그 존재 하나하나를 다시 되살려 놓으면서 그것들로 채워진 이 삶과 세계를 적조하게 응시한다. 여기에는 다만 그것을 바라보는 모종의 무심하기 그지없는 시선이 있고 그것들과 함께 살아가는 일상의 동선이 있으며 또한 그 안에서 일어나는 담담한 감정의 여운이 희미하게 눌려 있다. 에칭과 드로잉의 선들은 그것을 보다 확고하게 누르고 있다. ■ 박영택

Quotidian Receptacles Incarnated by Etching and Drawing Hong Yoon's works produced using sensitive and sensuous line delineation consist of etchings and drawings. Both types of artworks are monochrome pictures primarily rendered by lines. The difference is that etching is a sort of negative painting in which images are left in intaglio on a metal plate while drawing is a sort of positive painting in which images inhabit the surface of a thin piece of paper. Of course, they are almost even without any differences in height or depth. Images are subtly reincarnated under such conditions. In etching, scars are made by cutting into the surface of a solid, cold metal plate which are then saturated with ink, leaving behind marks. Images achieved by pressing down on the surface of paper are suggestive of an actual, not imaginary, presence. Upon closer consideration, etching is a kind of low-relief in that it possesses some sculptural elements. A work of etching contains both pictorial and sculptural elements in the same body. ● Hong Yoon has carefully portrayed things and specific receptacles she encounters in her everyday life using the methodologies of etching and drawing. She seems to observe, glean, and document such things which fill her daily life and spaces. The act of creating pictures unintentionally observes everyday life and disinterestedly describes its modernity. This means that the themes of her pictures are the dailiness of this moment and the presence of a subject. This is, in fact, the modernity of art. ● The artist etches and portrays receptacles often found in our daily lives. These mostly consist of bottles containing food and paper, plastic, and vinyl products. Hong gazes at them from a bird's-eye view. Objects are the only things placed in sites where perspective and background have been erased like maps or pictograms. They seem like a variety of things that one would take out from a refrigerator. They are also clustered, copying a human world. The work of depicting the various receptacles and countless things that fill one's surroundings serves to prove the eyes of indifference from which we accept some existence without prejudice and the fact that everyday life itself is of great significance. A variety of receptacles containing food are both alluring and interesting aesthetic objects. One of the achievements of contemporary art is that anything, not just something special, can be the subject matter of art. It is extremely common for the readymade to become art and art to pursue its silhouette. ● As such, Hong Yoon very keenly and delicately portrays the outer appearances of common receptacles and their silhouettes. The artist brings new life to each existence by means of etching and drawing as she serenely gazes at her life and world full of such things. Her art involves her detached view of them, everyday movements that are active with them, and serene emotional lingering that is suppressed within them. The etched and drawn lines more firmly suppress them. ■ Park Young-taik
