이 전시는 무심코 지나칠 수 있는 우리의 삶을 깊이 있게 바라보는 작가의 시선으로부터 출발한다. 그의 시선은 '밖'으로 향한다. '밖'은 사람들의 흔적이 남아있고, 흔적에 시간이 보태져 오래된 '무엇'으로 인식된다. 세월이 촘촘히 박힌 대상은 소란스런 이야기를 간직한 채, 언제나 그 자리를 지키고 있다. 우리는 그것이 눈에 너무 익숙해서 별다른 의미를 두지 않기도 한다. ● 허선정은 이렇게 의미 없이 지나쳐버리는 것들에 주의를 기울이고, 시간에 물든 정서를 담아낸다. 그는 낡아진 대상에 대한 슬픔을 지어내려 하지 않는다. 오히려 충분한 애정과 눈길을 쏟아 대상의 본질을 파악한다. 작가는 오랜 시간 동안, 장지 위에 분채를 얇게 여러 번 쌓아 올린다. 이러한 작업방식은 마치 먼저 눈으로 한 꺼풀씩 드러낸 시간의 흔적을, 다시 장지 위에 분채로 한 꺼풀씩 올리는 것과 다르지 않다.

작가는 시간이 만들어낸 풍경을 여러 시각으로 관찰한다. 실제를 바탕으로, 실재하지 않은 세계를 그리는 것이다. 이를테면 시간의 흐름과 함께 기억이 변곡되는 것처럼, 존재하지만 상상이 더해진 세계를 그린다. 그의 작품은 논리적인 추론이나 명확한 단어로 정체를 규명하기보다는, 함축적인 의미를 지닌다. ● 전시장의 작품들은 가볍게 움직였다가, 고요해지는 것을 반복한다. 예상치 못한 순간에 만나고, 때로는 어떤 만남도 없이 스쳐버릴 수도 있다. 이처럼 작가는 잔잔히, 익숙함을 낯섦으로 변화시키며, 무심함에 대한 환기를 이끈다. 그 순간, 우리 삶에 평범하게 스며들어 있던 것들의 가치와 의미를 발견하게 된다. ● 작가는 우리의 삶에 주의를 기울이고 이해하며, 스스로의 존재를 인식한다. 이와 같이 시간에 의해 사라져가는 정서를 붙잡으며, 눈에 익숙해져 소중함을 느끼지 못했던 주변에 대한 환기로 이어지길 기대해본다. ■ 이주언

The exhibition starts with Heo thoroughly examining what we often overlook in our lives. Her attention is on the 'outside'. The 'outside' is where people leave traces and, in time, becomes 'something' that we recognise. The object, which had seen better days, stand its ground, bearing its noise of time. Since it is too familiar to the eyes, we often disregard its significance. ● The artist concentrates on those often dismissed and draws emotions from time. She does not attempt to prompt sentiment for the old. Instead, she searches for the true nature of the object with affection and attention. Her method consists of layering papers and dyes over an extended period. The layers serve as traces of time as if our eyes can peel them off one by one. ● The artist observes from intricate perspectives what the time created. Based on the real world, she creates an augmented one. In other words, her world is a real one with imaginations, as if memories change over time. Her works cannot be described with a specific word or a logical deduction. They carry implicative meaning. ● The artworks in this exhibition alternate between treading lightly and calming down. Some may surprise us or pass by. The artist offers a subtle reminder of our indifference by making the familiar peculiar. At that moment, we discover the meaning and value of those permeating our lives. ● The artist calls us to become attentive and understand our lives and to realise self-existence. May the exhibition serve as a revitalisation for our attentiveness to reconsider our disappearing emotions and surroundings we deemed insignificant because they were too familiar. ■ Lee Joo Eon
