샌정은 '회화란 무엇인가?'에 대한 생각의 토대 위에서, 회화 그 존재와 가치에 대해 질문을 던진다. 미술작품이 한 공간에 걸려있을 때 감상자와 그림, 그리고 그 외의 바깥 세계라는 셋으로 나누어진 요소 중 회화를 부각시키면서, 갤러리 안에서 응시되어지는 그림에 대한 의미에 접근해 본다.

이번에 보여주는 샌정의 작품들에는 3년 전 'study painting'에서 전시했던 작품들에 반추상 형태들이 사라지고, 무채색 톤을 배경으로 여러 색채의 추상형태들이 화면에 나타난다. 작가는 서양의 오랜 미술사조와 만나는 동양 수묵화의 정신적 기운 아래, 여기에서 이어지는 이야기를 화면 안에 담아내려 한다. 그는 동양적 감수성에 바탕을 두고 동양과 서양 회화의 접점을 모색한다. 어찌 보면 산수 풍경화 같은 배경 위에 대조적으로 나타나는 기하학적인 형태들은 우주의 행성들처럼 허공에 떠있다. 한국의 오방색을 연상시키는 빨강, 파랑, 노랑, 초록의 기본 색을, 점과 선, 원과 사각형 등의 기본 형태를 반복하며 '회화란 무엇인가?' 그 의미를 찾고 있는 듯하다. 어디로 향해 가는지 알 수 없는 그의 작품 속에서 감상자의 시선은 작가의 붓놀림을 따라 화면 이 곳 저 곳을 떠돌게 된다. 제한된 환경 속에서 작가의 관조적 태도가 회화로 나타나고, 내면의 혼돈과 고립은 오랜 시간 숙고한 후에 화면위로 던져져 모호한 붓질로 드러난다. 샌정은 페인팅 자체를 숙제로 안고 현대적 의미에서 '회화 미학'의 해석과 재해석에 작품 제작의 가치를 둔다.

'What Makes a Painting a Painting?' 'What is a painting?' ● 벽면에 걸린 미술작품에 대한 중립적 사고를 가지고 그림을 바라볼 때, 회화에 대한 샌정의 의문은 풀리지 않는 문제로 감상자에게 다가온다. 그의 작품은 끝없는 과정의 연속이며, 자신의 삶 속에서 지속적으로 사유해온 흔적임을 보여준다. ■ 조정란

Inspired by the thoughts on the idea of 'what is painting?', Sen Chung throws questions on the very existence and value of painting. Chung assumes the viewer, the painting, and the outside world as the three distinct elements when looking at a work of art in space, and emphasizes on the element of painting and explores the meaning of painting within the gallery space. ● Chung's works presented in this exhibition are a reinvention of the 'study paintings' from 3 years ago, without the semi-abstract forms and with abstract forms of various colors portrayed on a background with an achromatic color tone. What unfolds on Chung's canvas is the narrative that is conjured up at the precise point of encounter between the long history of Western art history and the spirit of East Asian ink and wash painting. Chung explores the contact point between East Asian painting and Western painting, based on his East Asian sensibilities. In a way, the geometric shapes that cast a stark contrast with the ink landscape-like background hover like planets in outer space. The repetition of primary colors of red, blue, yellow and green, evocative of the five traditional colors of Korea, and the basic shapes such as point, line, circle and square seem to question what painting is, and lies in its meaning. Chung does not give any clues as to where to place one's gaze in his works, but his brush strokes lead our gaze all over the surface of his paintings. In a confined environment, the artist 's meditative attitude is rendered through his paintings, and his inner chaos and isolation are cast on the screen after a long period of contemplation, becoming manifest via the ambiguous brush strokes. Painting itself is a life-long question for Chung, who places the value of his work production on the interpretation and reinterpretation of the 'aesthetics of painting' in contemporary meaning and context. ● 'What Makes a Painting a Painting?' 'What is a painting?' ● When looking at a painting from a neutral stance, Chung's questions appear to be unsolved questions.
