지극히 사적인 사색과 누적된 기억 안에서 다른 세계에 대한 동경을 암시적으로 그려내는 작가, 샌정은 말로는 담아 내기 어려운 자신의 내적인 심상을 회화의 기본 요소인 형과 색으로 표현하면서 그렸다 지우고 다시 그리는 작업을 반복하고 있다. ● 작가는 감성과 이성의 시각화를 위한 직접적인 또는 간접적인 접근을 고찰하면서 형태의 왜곡이나 색상의 제약을 통해 자신이 원하는 분위기로 작업을 해 나간다. 이 과정에서 추상적 스터디가 많이 개입된다. 기하학적인 선, 사각형과 같은 도형 요소는 개인적으로 의미 지워질 수 있는 결정체, 마크, 기억의 추상적 표식으로써 화면 안에 형식으로 자리를 잡는다. 그림의 방향이 좀 더 미니멀하고 추상적으로 발전 되어 가면서 확실하지 않은 듯한 숨겨진 작가의 의도는 보는 이들에게 무한한 정신적 체험을 가능하게 한다.

평면에 대한 동양과 서양의 해석과 이해의 교차점에서 작가는 컨템포러리한 시각적 재해석에 주안점을 둔다. 비어 있는 화면에 단순하게 드로잉 하는 듯한 샌정의 그림에서 동양의 미학을 찾아 볼 수 있다. 그러나 화면의 비어져 있는 부분이 여백이 아닌 뭔가로 채워진 것 같은 느낌은 무엇인가. 구상과 추상의 경계에서 이리 저리 배회하는 작가의 정서적 자유로움과 문화적 다원성을 보여주는 것인가. 오랜 시간 고향을 떠나 먼 나라에서 살아 온 작가가 막연하게 공감하는 장소에 대한 노스텔지어를 나타내는 것이리라. ● 누크갤러리 전시를 통해 샌정의 그림이 형과 색을 거쳐 어떻게 의미 지워 지는지 살펴 보고, 작가 자신 뿐 아니라 보는 이에게도 영감과 사유를 주는 전시가 되기를 기대한다. ■ 조정란

Artist Sen Chung, who paints his longing for another world in an allusive manner based on extremely private contemplation and accumulated memories, repeatedly paints, erases and paints again, expressing inner mental pictures that are hard to explain in words, through the basic elements of painting: shapes and colors. ● As he investigates direct and indirect approaches to visualize emotion and reason, the artist works to create the atmosphere he wants by distorting forms or using limited colors. In this process, there is the significant intervention of abstract studies. Geometric lines, and figures such as rectangles are positioned in the picture-plane to create form as a crystallization, a mark, or an abstract sign of memory, which is charged with personal meaning. ● As his paintings develop in a more minimal and abstract direction, the seemingly uncertain, hidden intentions of the artist make it possible for viewers to engage in infinite mental experience. At the intersecting point of interpretation and comprehension of the plane by East and West, the artist places more weight on contemporary visual re-interpretation. In Sen Chung's paintings, which appear as simple drawings done on an empty picture-plane, we can find the aesthetics of the East. But what is this feeling, that the parts of the picture-plane left empty seem to be filled with something other than void? Is it to reveal the emotionally free spirit and cultural diversity of the artist, who wanders about here and there? It most likely represents nostalgia for a place that evokes vague empathy by the artist, who left his home town long ago and has lived in a country far away. ● Through this exhibition at nook gallery, we hope to observe how Sen Chung's paintings gain meaning through the use of shape and color, and to provide an opportunity for viewers to experience this artist's inspiration and contemplation. ■ Jungran Cho
