9월의 어느 날, 설레는 마음으로 '낭만정원'이 있는 대전으로 향했다. 그동안 회화와는 먼 영역에서 작업을 해온 허구영이 꽃에 둘러싸여 그림을 그리고 있다는 소식은 필자에게는 큰 놀라움이었다. 항상 그림 그리기에 관심을 가져왔던 그는 시대를 거스르는 낭만적인 그림을 그리기 위해 '낭만정원'이라는 화원에 둥지를 틀었다.

낭만주의적 감각을 경계하던 허구영은 언제부터인가 자기도 모르게 가슴 깊은 곳에 눌려져 있던 감각을 불러오게 된다. 자신의 감정을 최소화하는 작업을 고집해 오던 그에게 어떤 충동의 회오리가 몰아친 것일까? 1990년대 중반에도 꽃 그림을 그려 전시를 한 경험이 있다는 그는 그 시절의 그림과 현재의 그림에서 또 다른 자아를 발견한다. 한 때는 그림을 그려보고자 했으나 한 점을 그리기가 힘들던 시절도 있었다고 한다. 지난여름 그의 우발적인 제안으로 시작된 꽃 그림을 그리면서, 그리는 즐거움은 쉽게 찾아왔다. 꽃을 그리면 이렇게 좋으리라는 것을 진작 알고 있었다는 그는 치유의 경험을 몸으로 느끼며 소중한 프로젝트를 실행해 간다. 화원은 작업실이자 장기간의 전시장이 되었다. 그리던 꽃은 시들어 사라지고 그림은 남아 꽃의 자리를 대신한다. 어느 쪽이 주체인지 모르게 순서를 번갈아 가며 사라지고 남는다. 인상적인 노란색 바탕에 검붉은 꽃이 고혹적으로 고개를 숙이고, 푸른 밤을 배경으로 초록의 식물이 묘한 기운을 불러온다. 기둥 뒤에 숨은 커다란 푸른 잎은 그림 속의 그림 한 켠에 그려지고, 화초들 사이에 앉은 작가의 자화상은 그림 속 꽃을 닮아있다. 이렇게 즐거운데 왜 이제야 그림을 그리게 됐느냐는 질문에 그는 항상 회화 그 자체를 생각하고 있었기에 전혀 그리지 않았다고 할 수 없으며, 감각이라는 것은 의식하고 있으면 절반은 그리는 것이 가능하다고 답한다. 개념적인 작업을 통해 자신을 보여 온 허구영은 직접적인 그림을 그리며 자신의 색깔을 새롭게 만들어 간다. 그때그때 끌리는 대로 무작정 그림을 그리며 마주하는 체험의 과정은 그에게 소중한 결과를 가져오리라. 언제든 낭만정원으로 달려가 그림을 그리고 싶다는 사실이 그에게는 무엇보다도 중요하게 다가온다. ● 낭만...... 이 얼마나 오랜만에 들어보는 아름다운 단어인가! ■ 조정란

그동안 회화와는 먼 영역에서 작품을 해왔고 늘 그림그리기에 관심과 충동을 느껴왔지만 이에 게을렀던 나는 현재 어찌 보면 회화에 관한한 초심자이리라. 하지만 이런 계기에 한시적으로나마 그때그때 끌리는 대로 무작정 그림을 그려보기로 한 것이다. 낭만정원에서의 낭만적인 그림그리기라...... 이 얼마나 시대착오적인 풍경인가? 그러나 나는 오히려 그러한 시대착오적인 실행을 통해 주체의 시대성에 스스로 거스르고 역행함으로써 기대되는 주체의 균열(새로움)과 이반의 쾌감을 맛보고자 하는 것이다. ■ 허구영

One day in September, with a fluttering heart, I headed for the "Romantic Garden" in Daejeon. It came to me as a great surprise that artist Heo, Ku-Young, who had worked in an area far from painting, was now painting in an environment surrounded by flowers. The artist, who has always been interested in drawing pictures, nested himself in a flower garden called Romantic Garden, in order to paint romantic paintings that go against the times. ● The artist, who had been vigilant against romantic sensibility, in spite of himself, began to summon the senses pressed down somewhere deep inside his heart at a certain point in time. What was the vortex of impulse that struck upon this artist, who had obstinately minimized his emotions reflected in his works? The artist, who claims to have held an exhibition of flower paintings in the mid 1990s, discovers another self in his paintings from then, and his paintings of the present. He says there was a time when he wanted to paint, but had difficulty even painting a single work. Last summer, as he began to paint flowers according to a spontaneous proposal, the pleasure of painting came easily. Heo, who claims that he already knew it would be so good to paint flowers, now carries out his precious project while feeling the experience of healing with his body. The flower garden has become the artist's studio and long-term exhibition space. The flowers he paints wither and disappear while his paintings take their place. The order of disappearing and remaining alternates, making us lose track of which is the subject. Blackish-red flowers against impressive yellow backgrounds bow down in an alluring manner, and green plants evoke a mysterious air against the blue night. Large green leaves hiding behind a column are painted on one side of the painting, while the self-portrait of the artist sitting among flowers resembles those flowers in the painting. When asked why he waited until now to indulge in such pleasure of painting, he replied that it cannot be said that he was not painting at all, since he was always thinking about painting per se. The thing about sense is that if you are aware, it is possible to be half-painting. Heo, Ku-Young, who had presented himself through conceptual works, is now creating new colors for himself through direct painting. The process of experience, facing and painting whatever he is drawn to, will surly bring him valuable results. Above all, the fact that he always wants to rush to the Romantic Garden and paint is his most important concern. ● Romance... what a beautiful word to hear after such a long time! ■ Jungran Cho
