꿈과 기억의 향기 ● 산다는 게 꿈과 꿈 사이를 오가는 일일 수도 있다. 욕구와 희망으로 그려가는 현실세계의 꿈과, 그 현실의 의식활동 이면에서 부지불식간 경험하게 되는 전혀 생소한 꿈의 세계가 서로 이어진 듯 다른 듯 삶을 엮어 가기 때문이다. 무의식에 잠재된 또 다른 나의 정신세계에서 새삼스레 현실의 나를 깨닫거나, 현실 너머의 상상과 바램들로 꿈인 듯 잔상인 듯 내 삶의 화폭들을 채워가는 것이다. ● 사는 중에 간혹 들춰지는 기억들은 의식과 무의식에 녹아들어 문득 지금의 거울로 비쳐지는 나의 내면들이다. 한때 실재했던 사실로서 기억이지만 시간의 퇴적에 따라 추억과 향수라는 감성적인 여운으로 지금의 나를 물들게 하거나 다시 곧추세우는 심지가 되기도 한다. 의식활동으로서 기억과, 감성적인 삶의 반향으로서 추억과 향수는 현실의 꿈과 내면의 꿈과도 같은 이면성과 연계성을 갖고 있는 셈이다.

이선희의 작업에서 기억과 향수와 꿈은 주된 화제꺼리들이다. 과거의 기억들이 삭혀지고 발아되어 추억과 향수가 되기도 하고, 예쁜 꽃단장으로 되살아나거나 여전히 아픈 상처의 흔적으로 남아있기도 하다. 초기부터 보여 온 꿈속인 듯 자기정화 중인 듯 살빛이 비칠 듯 말 듯한 시스룩의 여인 연작도, 꽃송이를 꽂은 살랑이는 머릿결의 목덜미나 하늘빛 머금은 엷은 스커트 자락, 맑은 순수를 담은 여인의 뒤태나 표정이 가려진 뒷모습들도 그런 이선희 작업의 성향들을 보여주는 주된 이미지들이다. 상실을 딛고 다시 피어나는 꽃과 같은 인생, 닿을 수 없는 그날을 그리움과 향기로 추억해내는 연작들이다. ● 이선희의 회화는 대부분 사실성 위주 세필묘법으로 일상 소재의 친근감을 주지만 거기에 추억과 향수와 꿈이 더해지면서 현실인 듯 몽환인 듯 불확실한 시공간으로 이끌어 간다. 그것은 꿈의 세계가 시점도 장소도 공간도 모호한 채 뒤섞이면서 전혀 생각지도 못한 일들이 펼쳐지는 것과 같은 맥락이다. 현실에서 마주했을 법한 익숙한 인물 모습과 사실적인 묘사를 통로 삼아 서정과 상상이 결합된 몽환의 세계로 이끌어가는 것이다. 어느 때 어느 순간의 기억들을 사실과 아련함을 섞어 몽환적인 세계로 드러내면서 거기에 상상을 유도하는 스토리를 더하는 방식이다. ● 그가 이번 전시를 준비하면서 "그동안의 작업이 대체로 사실적인 묘사 위주였다면 그 명료한 것들의 틀에서 벗어나고 싶다."고 했지만 여전히 작업은 명료한 사실화법을 기초로 어렴풋한 상상을 불러일으킨다. 그의 그림의 주된 소재인 제각기 다른 색깔과 자태와 향기를 지닌 꽃들이 감성을 자극하는 여인의 모습들과 함께 거의 모든 작품에 담겨지면서 단지 탐미적 관점이나 화면 장식효과로서가 아닌 작품에 담긴 이야기를 유추하는 단서가 되고 있다.

「꽃 속으로 숨다」는 능소화 그늘 속에 눈을 가리고 있는 여인의 모습이다. 꽃그늘 아래 수줍은 소녀처럼 보여지는 이 작품은 최근 가까운 지인에게서 경험했던 이중적 태도와 그로 인한 마음의 상처, 스스로를 눈멀게 할 수 있는 그녀의 자기기만에 대한 연민이 담겨 있다. 「그리움」의 경우에도 마음에 남은 지난날의 성장기 상처를 시골 울타리집을 연상시키는 하얀 탱자꽃 가시덩굴로 반추시키면서 그 또한 추억이라 여기는 지금의 모습에 스스로 가시면류관을 씌워 위무하는 것이다. ● 두 점으로 제작된 「헛된 시간이 없는 것처럼」 연작은 일반적인 연꽃그림들과는 달리 연꽃의 뿌리부터 꽃과 잎까지 수면 위·아래 색채를 달리해서 전체 모습을 함께 그려낸 구성에서 눈길을 끈다. 이전에는 물 밖으로 드러난 화려한 연꽃과 연잎 위주의 묘사들이었다면, 진흙탕 사바세계에 뿌리내리고 꿋꿋이 뻗어 오른 연줄기 부분을 흑백으로 묘사하고, 수면 위로 펼쳐진 푸른 잎과 화사한 꽃송이들을 원색으로 묘사하여 대조시켰다. 뿌리와 줄기, 꽃과 잎과 열매가 동시에 생장하며 한꺼번에 보여주는 연꽃의 일생을 사람의 생애와 같다고 본 것이다. 한 생명의 드러나지 않은 내면과 현상으로 나타나는 현재, 이 생 다음에 이어질 다음 생의 예비를 함께 보여주는 것이다. ● 「씨앗으로 날리다」는 하얀 소복의 전통 살풀이 춤사위에 민들레 홀씨들을 흩날리듯 그려 넣었다. 망자에 대한 애도·해원과 함께 그 죽음 이후로 이어지는 새 생명의 시작을 함께 보여주는 작품이다. '무당춤' 연작에서도 뚝뚝 떨어진 섬붉은 동백꽃을 통해 삶과 죽음의 찰나성, 동시성을 표현하기도 한다.

이선희는 최근 그동안 인물 일변도로 이야기를 풀어내는데 한계를 느낀다고 한다. 자유자재한 전신 포즈들이나 표정으로 속내를 내밀하게 보여주기보다 여체의 일부나 뒷모습, 꽃과 함께 이루어내는 분위기들로 화면을 꾸려내기 때문이다. 따라서 화폭의 배경이면서 상상을 보다 풍부하게 펼쳐낼 만한 다른 소재를 곁들여 보려 한다. 이번에 선보이는 「때로는 그림자처럼」은 마른 나뭇가지와 바람결을 상징하는 풍경이 비치는 창문이 실내를 연푸른빛으로 채워주는 구도이다. 가녀린 듯한 목덜미에 경추돌기들이 유난히 도드라진 이 여인의 꿋꿋하고도 어둡지만은 않을 삶에 위무와 희망을 담아 전하는 것이다. ● 사색과 몰입으로 일궈가는 이선희의 작업들은 화폭에 채색을 채운 뒤 일부를 비우고 덮기를 반복하면서 그 위에 이야기를 함축한 이미지를 올려 가는데, 이를 자기치유의 과정으로 삼기도 한다. "향기는 그 대상과 자신과의 사이에 대한 감성의 교류이다. 철저하게 이성은 배제된 감각과 느낌, 오로지 감성적이고 자연적인 풍부한 교감이다."며 기억과 무의식이 녹아 있는 삶의 향기를 채색으로 그려내면서 "나와 타자의 내면, 꿈을 드러내고 전달하고 싶다."고 말한다. 실체로서 몸과 정신세계와는 다른 내면의 감성, 현실과 몽환에서 꾸게 되는 꿈들, 살면서 만들어지는 인생의 지문들도 "지나고 나면 모든 게 향기로 남는다"는 생각을 채색화폭으로 펼쳐내는 것이다. ● 여린 듯 당찬 듯, 작업실 칩거형일 듯 하면서도 공공 벽화작업 현장의 리더로서 이선희가 지닌 다층적인 면들은 작업의 변화에서도 여러 가능성으로 나타나리라고 본다. 다만, 화면 구성방식이나 소재의 취사선택과 채색묘법에서 그동안 주목을 끌었던 그만의 독특한 작업스타일이 희석되지 않고, 간혹 인물의 묘사에서 세부적인 부자연스러움이 사실회화의 전체적인 흐름을 깨트리지는 않아야겠다. 이번 전시가 또 한 번의 자기반추의 기회이자 추구해 나가는 회화세계의 중요한 디딤돌이 되길 바란다. ■ 조인호

모든 추억은 저마다의 향기를 지닌 한 송이의 꽃이다. // 공기 속으로 사라진 줄로만 알았던 냄새들이 느닷없이 지난 기억을 꺼내주듯 / 향기는 늘 기억이란 존재를 달고 온다. / 내가 경험했던 순간들과 잊고 지냈던, 혹은 감춰두었던 그것들을 불현 듯 끄집어내곤 한다. // 꿈인 듯 현실인 듯, 기억과 무의식의 사이, 향기가 되어 떠나버린 것들...... 그것들에게 하나하나 이름을 지어주고 싶다. ■ 이선희

Fragrance of Dreams and Memories ● Memory, perfume and dreams in Lee Sun Hee's work are the main topics. Past memories are forgotten and germinated, which become memories and nostalgia or revive as a pretty flowery look or remain a trail of painful injuries. Like a dream seen from the first period, Even a picture series of a woman in a see-through, and even a rear figure of a woman with a necklace of hair blowing gently with putting flowers in and a thin skirt with sky-blue and with a clear pure water are the main images which show the tendency of Lee Sun Hee's work ● Lee Sun Hee's paintings are mostly based on facts and give a sense of familiarity with everyday material, but as memories, nostalgia and dreams are added to them, they lead us to uncertain time and space as if they are real. It is in the same context that the world of dreams unfolds unexpectedly while blending with the viewpoint, the place, and the ambiguous space. Through the familiar figure and realistic depiction that might have faced in reality, it leads us to the world of fantasy combined with lyricism and imagination. ● While preparing for this exhibition, she said, "this time I would like to escape from the framework of the clear things if the work were mostly about realistic depiction during the past years," but the work still causes a fuzzy imagination based on the narrative method. Flowers with different colors, shapes, and fragrances are becoming clues to the story of an emotional woman as well as the story of her work, rather than the aesthetic point of view or the effect of screen decoration. ● "Hiding in a Flower" is a picture of a woman covering her eyes in the shade of a Jacob flower. It is loneliness in glamor, or a sinking from the blind outside world to the individual world. "Missing" also is a reflection of the white tangerine flower in the countryside of the old scar in the heart and covers the crown of thorns of its own on the current appearance regarding it as a memory. ● A Series of "As If There Is No Time to Waste" is a composition that depicts the entire figure with different colors of the upper part and the lower part from the roots of the lotus to flowers and leaves. This work depicts the stem stretched in the muddy world with black and white, and in contrast, depicts the green leaves and bright blossoms on the surface with the primary color. This work shows us that the life of the lotus, the roots, the stem, the flowers, the leaves, and the fruits growing at the same time is like that of humans. It illuminates both the present as the undisclosed inner side and the manifesting phenomenon of one life and the preparation of the next life to follow after together. ● The work "Fly as a Seed" paints the dandelion seeds like fluttering on the traditional exorcism dance in a white mourning clothes. This is a work showing the death and mourning for the dead together with the beginning of a new life after the death. 'Shaman dance' series also expresses the immediacy and concurrency of life and death through red camellia dripping. ● Lee Sun-hee is trying to construct a composition with other material that can be background of the drawing width and spread the imagination more abundantly rather than the character-centered. "Sometimes Like a Shadow" is a composition that the dried branches and the scenery where the wind rises are contained in the window while and fills the indoor with the blue light. It conveys comfort and hope in a life that is as strong but not dark as the woman who has a unusual cervical spine on her thin nape, ● Lee Sun Hee's work, which has a deep lyricism and speculation, is a coloring of the fragrance of life in which memory and unconsciousness are mixed. She thought, "The fragrance is an exchange of emotion between the object and oneself. It is the senses and feelings that exclude the reason, and also the emotional and natural abundant sympathy only. She unfolds her paintings with her dreams of reality and fantasy and with the life prints made in her life as the scent of life. ■ Cho In Ho

All the memories are a bunch of flowers with the scent respectively. // Just as the smell that I knew to be lost into the air pulls out my last memory, / The fragrance always comes with a memory.It draws out suddenly the moments I've experienced and the moments I've forgotten or hidden. // As if it were a dream, or a reality, between memory and unconsciousness, things that were left as fragrance... / I want to name them one by one. ■ Lee Sunhee
