일구어진 땅 Cultivated Land-인간이 파헤쳐 놓은 땅을 다시 일구는 동물들 ● 새로운 건물을 짓기 위해 기존에 있던 건물을 부수고 난 후 편평하게 일구어 놓은 땅을 시간을 두고 지켜본 일이 있다. 인간이 버린 쓰레기들과 함께 폐허로 변해버린 땅은 시간이 지나자 그 위에 풀이 하나, 둘 돋기 시작하더니 이내 이름 모를 꽃과 풀로 뒤덮였다. 그곳에는 새가 날아들고 예나 지금이나 그곳을 지키는 듯 고양이와 떠돌이 개가 돌아다닌다. 이 땅 위에 인간이 개입해 새로운 것을 짓는 대신 그대로 놓아둔다면 어떤 풍경으로 변하게 될지 상상해 본다. ● 천 위에 흙을 얹고 식물을 한 포기씩 그리며 땅을 재현한다. 현실의 풍경을 다시 돌아보고 그 위에 상상으로 본래 그 풍경에 존재했을 법한 동물을 그려 넣는다. 그리는 과정이 진행되면서 사람의 손길이 닿았던 사물들과 함께 식물이 어지럽게 뒤엉키며 새로운 의미를 만들어 낸다. 나의 작업은 하나의 과정으로 보면 자라나는 이야기와 같다. ● 사람이 떠난 터 안에 남아있는 동물들을 보면서 감정이입을 하고 그들에게 역할을 주고 이야기를 만든다. 주변 자연을 고려하지 않은 채 진행되는 개발의 모습이 아니라 동물들의 손으로 일구어진 땅의 모습을 생각하고 그린다. 동물들은 가면이나 모자를 쓰며 작은 신의 모습으로 탈바꿈 하고 땅을 지키고 가꾸는 역할을 한다. 이들은 인간과 자연 사이의 어디쯤에서 서로를 비추어주며 우리를 되돌아보게 한다. ■ 김한울

Cultivated land-The animals cultivating the land that was dug up by human. ● I have watched flat land for a long time after destroying a building to erect a new one. As time goes by, the devastated land was slowly covered with nameless wild flowers and grass instead of trash thrown by human. Birds are flying over the land. Stray dogs and cats are still wandering around the land as if they are looking after it. ● I imagine what if human interference in nature was ceased. Leaving the nature as it is... ● The procedure of reproducing nature is consist of placing soil on the canvas and drawing plants one by one. Looking back reality of current scenery, I draw imaginary animals where they should have placed. The new meaning is created for continuing the drawing process while human things and plants all tangled up together. My work is just like a growing story in terms of process. ● Watching remaining animals after human left, I feel of empathy and assign roles to them. The story is born while the work is proceeded. The animals protect the land by changing their looks as fairys wearing masks and hats. They shines somewhere – midst of humans and nature - making us reflect on ourselves. ■ KIMHANWOOL
