어떤 것 Something

「어떤 것」은 「습관적 세계」 연작 중 세 번째 시리즈로 전작의 사물을 모티브로 하고 있다. 그동안 사물을 소재로 타인의 취향과 그 속에 투영된 사회적 현상, 개인의 욕구를 관찰하고 일상적인 모습을 화면에 담아보려고 노력했다. 또한 나의 관심사는 타인에서 개인의 취향으로 변화하며 그리는 사물에 대해 은밀하고, 밀접해지는 개인주의적 방식은 스스로 망각할 수밖에 없는 방향으로 변형해왔다.

「어떤 것」시리즈는 '사물을 그린다'는 형식적인 요소를 유지하지만, 사물의 조형적인 형태와 세부 모습에서 독특한 미감을 발견하고 '균형'을 찾아가는 과정의 작업이다. 사물의 형태를 반복적, 유동적으로 조작하며 증식시키는 고집스러운 조형실험은 내가 그리기 통해 이해하는 대로 사물을 바라보게 되고, 기존의 작업에서 분리된 사물의 개체들이 개별적으로 견고하고 빈틈없는 단단한 덩어리로 진화된 것을 확인할 수 있다. 그리는 사물은 그 스스로 완벽한 구성을 보여주고, 균형과 긴장감을 극대화하는데 집중한다.

나는 사물의 형태와 그 내부를 재현하고 있는 세부를 그려가는 그리기의 추상성을 통해 사물의 표피 뒤에 숨어 있던 은밀한 취향을 전면으로 부상시키고, 일정한 호흡으로 세밀하게 그리는 작업 방식과 사물을 해석하는 고집스러운 태도는 결국 시각적 유희를 모색하는 나의 내밀한 취향의 발로라 할 수 있다. ■ 차영석

『Something』is the third sequence of works among the 「Chronic Circumstance」 series, using objects from my previous works as its motif. All the while, I have been trying to portray the everyday images by observing the social phenomenon reflected within the tastes of others and the desires of individuals inside the picture frame, using objects as the subject matter. Also, my point of interest had changed from the taste of others to the taste of individuals; the private method, which becomes secretive and intimate towards the objects I am drawing, transformed into the direction of forgetting myself. ● 「Something」 series maintains the formal element of "drawing objects", however, it is a work in process of discovering the unique sense of beauty and searching 'balance' within the objects' formative shapes and details. The obstinate formative experiment which manipulates and proliferates the objects' shapes repetitively and organically enables me to look at the objects the way I understand them through drawing, and one can confirm the fact that the entity of objects which had been separated in the past works have evolved individually into firm, compact and solid masses. The object drawn, it shows a perfect composition, and it focuses on maximizing balance and tension. ● Through the abstractness of drawing which draws the objects' shapes and the details that represent their interiors, I reveal the secretive taste hidden behind the objects' skin to the foreside; my method of drawing meticulously, with steady breaths, and my obstinate attitude in which I interpret objects can eventually be called the manifestation of my confidential taste. Moreover, through the endless process of searching 'balance' through objects, I hope my drawings will be able to function in special ways. ■ Youngseok Cha
