In the Beginning (태초에)

"인간은 어떻게 시작되었는가?"로 출발해서 "인간이 존재하는 시간과 공간은 어떻게 시작되었는가?"로 발전한 질문에 대한 답을 찾기 위해 철학, 종교, 예술 등 다양한 분야에서 여전히 탐구가 진행되고 있다. 과학 분야에서는 관찰하고 측정하고 실험하면서 태초에 관한 이론들을 객관화 시키려고 노력하고 있다. 철학자들은 자연과 사물에 대한 물음을 가지고 사유하는 과정을 통해 세계의 근원이 무엇인지에 대해 설명하고 설득한다. 신학자들은 초월적 존재에 대한 인정을 바탕으로 세상을 신 중심으로 해석한다. 예술가들은 현실세계와 현실너머의 세계에 대한 작가 개인의 관점을 작품 속에 녹여내어 표현한다.

"태초의 모습은 어떤 모습이었을까?" 태초의 모습은 태초부터 지금까지 흔적으로 남겨져 있어 존재하고 있을 것이다. 남겨진 흔적을 담아 존재가 있음을 증명해가는 매체인 사진을 통해 태초의 모습을 생명의 존재 관점에서 상상해 보았다. 생명이 존재하기 위해서는 생명을 담는 공간인 하늘과 생명의 터전이 되는 땅, 생명을 유지하게 하는 물, 그리고 생명을 보존하는 빛이 필수 조건일 것이다. 이러한 전제를 가지고 태초의 모습을 하늘, 땅, 물 그리고 빛으로 형상화하였다. ■ 김지영

We have sought answers to questions such as "How did humans begin?" and "How did the time and space we inhabit start?" in a wide range of fields including philosophy, religion, and art. We have also done our best to objectify theories on the beginning of humans and our space and time through scientific observation, measurement, and experimentation. Philosophers have denoted and elucidated what the source of the world is in the process of inquiring about nature and things. Theologians have put God at the center of their interpretation of the world based on their recognition of transcendental beings. And artists represent their individual perspectives toward the real world and the world beyond the real world through their works of art. ● "What did aspects of the beginning look like? The sights in the beginning have been left behind as traces. I have pictured aspects of the beginning using photography which is able to prove existence by holding such traces. Prerequisites for life are the sky, a space bearing life; the land, a base for life; water, an element for the maintenance of life; and light, a factor for the preservation of life. I have displayed projections of aspects of the beginning with the heavens, land, water, and light predicated upon such premises. ■ Kim Jiyoung
