Millennium Flowers 천년의 꽃

『천년의 꽃- Millennium Flowers』은 우리나라 목조 건축물 중에서 최고의 기술로 지어진 사찰 대웅전 등의 수미단(불단)에 조각되어 있는 꽃을 새롭게 형상화하여 검 프린트(Gum Bichromate Print)로 재현한 작품이다. 이 작업은 2014년 가을부터 약 2년여 동안 전국에 산재해있는 사찰 수미단(불단)의 꽃을 촬영하면서 진행되었다. ● 수미단(불단)은 사찰의 법당 안에 불상을 모셔놓은 단으로써 우주의 축소판인 다양한 장식들이 조각으로 표현 되어있다. 주로 성스러운 동, 식물들의 여러 대상들이 있지만, 공양 가운데 가장 으뜸인 것이 꽃이기에 수미단에 투각된 꽃만이 나의 오브제가 되었다.

이번 작업의 영감을 얻게 된 직접적인 동기는, 불교신자이신 어머니를 따라 절을 방문하게 된 계기에서부터 비롯된다. 그 곳에서 수미단(불단)에 조각된 간결하고 소박한 꽃문양의 단청을 보고난 후 나의 주된 사진 적 표현 도구인 검 프린트(Gum Bichromate Print)와 친근하다는 끌림을 받았고 그것이 살아있는 꽃이 되어 내 열정을 표현해 줄 수 있을 것이라는 확신을 가졌다. ● 오브제인 꽃을 촬영하고 네거티브 필름을 만들어서, 지지체인 종이에 유제를 바르고 노광과 수세를 반복하는 행위는 나의 사진에 있어 떼놓을 수 없는 고유한 형식이다.

디지털 테크놀로지가 새로운 조형언어로써 그 외연을 넓히고, 표현방식 또한 다양해진 현 시대에, 19C 후반에 유행했던 인화방식인 검 프린트(Gum Bichromate Print) 기법으로 작업을 진행한 이유는, 수미단의 꽃과 나의 검 작업으로 꽃을 피워내는 과정이 많은 유사성을 가지고 있기 때문이다. 낡고 빛바랜 단청마저도 아름다운 수미단의 꽃을 촬영하면서 대상과 소통하며 교감했던 감정들을 한 겹, 한 겹 붓으로 색을 바르고, 원하는 색이 나올 때 까지 조심스럽게 긁어내며 수세하는 과정들... 이러한 나의 손의 노력과 바람을 고스란히 작품에 쏟아내는 일련의 과정들이 수 백 년 전 수미단의 꽃을 피워냈던 장인이 느꼈을 기쁨과 일맥상통 하리라 생각된다. ● 하나의 색을 내기 위해 번거롭고 반복되는 과정을 거쳐야하지만, 꽃으로 피어나는 시간 속에서 느끼는 회화적 감성과 예술적 경험들은 나에게 희열로 다가와 사진에 대한 열정의 불씨를 밝혀준다. 그렇게 한 겹 한 겹 다시 피어나 마음속에 오래도록 남아있는 천년의 꽃을 피우고 싶다.

검 프린트(Gum Bichromate Print)는 19세기 후반부터 유행했던 회화주의 사진의 주된 기법으로 주로 아라비아고무와 감광유제인 중크롬산염, 그리고 수채화 물감을 혼합해서 종이에 바른 후 햇빛이나 자외선 노광기로 감광시킴으로써 이미지를 만들어 내는 전통적 비은염 컬러사진 프로세스이다. ■ 최수정

"Millennium Flowers" is reproduced piece using gum bichromate print by newly shaping sculpted flower located at Buddhist altar of the main temple which is constructed based on finest technique of Korean wooden building. ● For 2 years starting from autumn of 2014, this process was progressed while photographing flower of nationally scattered Buddhist temple altar. A dais for a Buddhist image is altar that serve statue of Buddha inside Buddhist sanctuary of temple, which is expressed by fragment of variety of ornaments that represent image of minimized universe. ● Although there are others like holy animal or plant, open worked flower became my objet as it’s considered the best among offerings to Buddha. My source of inspiration for this project stemmed from me accompanying my Buddhist mother to visit the temple. ● After viewing compact and simple flower pattern Danchenong (traditional multicolor paintwork) sculpted at Buddhist altar, I felt the familiar attraction with gum bichromate print, the photographical expression tool that I frequently use and I had confidence that it will become a live flower to express my passion. ● Repetition of coating emulsion, ultraviolet light exposure and soak in water on paper after photographing my objet flower and making negative film is untearable characteristic method within my photograph. ● In contemporary era in which digital technology that extends external as formative language and expression method has also been diversified, the reason for processing project by using Gum Bichromate print method popular during the late 19thcentury printing is that there is resemblance between flower of Buddhist altar and my process of flower blossom by Gum Bichromate printing. ● Photographing flower of Buddhist altar where old and faded Dancheong(traditional multicolor paintwork) is even beautiful, using brush, painting colors(c,m,y,k) layer by layer through communicated and communed emotions with subject and process of soak by scratching it delicately until desirable color appears…. ● I consider these series of processes through pouring my hand’s effort and wish delicately in piece carry a thread of connection between pleasures of artisan who bloomed flower of Buddhist altar few hundred years ago. ● To create one color, painstaking and repetitive procedure must be handled. However, pictorial emotion and artistic experience sensed through times blossoming with flower return to be as delight that ignites my passion for photography. ● Likewise, I desire to bloom a millennium flowers which blossoms layer by layer in hearts for ages. ● *Gum Bichromate Process 1. Make a film negative from the digital picture. 2. Choose the paper (watercolor paper in many cases). 3. Add a coat of emulsion onto the paper. 4. After exposing the film to paper, 5. Soak the exposured print in water. 6. Once completely soaked, dry the print. 7. When fully dry, repeat the process until you get at least four coats of different colored emulsions.
