인간의 욕망은 도시에 집중되고 동시에 인간은 이 도시로부터 사육 당하고 있다. 경제사회 질서는 개인의 삶을 철저하게 구획된 주거공간인 '아파트'의 형태와 같이 획일화하고, 동시에 자본주의 계급에 부합하는 형태로 규격화한다. ● 작가 강현선은 도시의 대표적인 주거 공간인 아파트를 사실적인 형태의 가상 이미지로 재구성하고 이를 극단적으로 단순화, 패턴화하여 작품에 현실성과 비현실성을 동시에 부여함으로써 희곡이나 영화에서 흔히 엿볼 수 있는 소격 효과와 같은 '시각 현상'을 생성한다. 이러한 작가의 의도는 '아파트'의 시각적 이미지를 통해 주거공간에 대한 관객들의 관념을 일깨우는 중요한 요소로 작용한다. ● 위기의 도시. 그 한가운데에 자리 잡은 스튜디오 콘크리트의 공간과 중첩되며 펼쳐지는 강현선의 이러한 작업물은 삶은 편의와 속도, 그리고 경제성을 위해 개성과 다양성을 담보 잡힌 ‘대한민국의 아파트’와 똑 닮은 우리의 모습을 의미심장하게 담아내며 중대한 질문을 던진다. 가상과 실재, 허상과 실상의 모호한 틈새에서 우리는 과연 몇 평의 삶을 살아가고 있는가. ■ 엄홍식_권바다

영화와 게임 속에 있을 법한 가상 현실이 실제 세계에 중첩되는 것은 현대 사회에서 낯설지 않다. 과거에 가상이라고 여겨졌던 것들은 현실 속에 들어와 빠른 속도로 삶의 일부가 되었다. 디지털 시대의 방대하고 소비적인 시각 이미지들은 진실과 환상을 오가며 끝없이 현실을 재구성한다. 나는 본질보다는 외관에 치중된, 복제 이미지로 가득한 지금 시대의 시각 현상을 다루고 있다. 재생산, 재사용된 디지털 이미지는 가상의 체험과 함께 현실의 범위를 확장시킨다. ● 이번 전시는 도시 공간, 특히 주거 공간인 아파트를 철골 구조물 위에 얹어 보여준다. 아파트는 서울 어느 곳에서든 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있고, 집은 철저히 구획된 영역으로 패턴처럼 만들어진다. 획일적 시스템을 가진 구조는 사람들에게 차별화되지 않은 시각적 기억을 남긴다. 이런 현상은 작업에서 일종의 패턴화된 이미지로 나타난다. 개인의 기억에서 불러온 공간 이미지는, 영상과 그래픽으로 만들어진 관념의 장소가 된다. 화면은 가상의 시뮬레이션을 떠올리게 하고, 규격화된 도시 구조에 따라 살아가는 삶의 허상을 비춘다. ■ 강현선

A city is where every human desire comes together and we are bred in it. According to the idea of 'standard' within the economic and social rules, one's personal life gets strictly arranged as the apartment buildings. In turn, one becomes a standardised individual that fit in capitalist class. ● The representative residential space of the city; the apartments are reconstructed as virtual yet realistic imageries by Hyunseon Kang Through radical simplification or patterning, the work implies both reality and unreality. Therefore 'the visual phenomenon' such as estrangement effect which can be often found in theatre and movies arises. Those visual images of the apartments questions the audience what the notion of living space actually is about. ● Our city is in crisis and we are standing in the middle of it. In this exhibition at studio concrete, Hyunseon Kang illustrates how we all look alike the apartments of Korea that have given up the individuality and diversity for the convenience and the economic benefit. ● In between virtuality and reality, or delusion and truth, the artist shows us how big our living spaces are. ■ Uhm Hongsik_Kwon Bada

The virtual reality that movies and games portray often overlaps with the tangible reality of today. What we considered as imaginary have rapidly become a part of our life. By navigating between truth and fantasy, the extensive and wasteful visual images of Digital age keep restructuring the reality. With my work, I deal with visual phenomena of our time derived from the overflow of superficial and duplicated imagery. The virtual experience, reproduced and reused digital images I create expand the boundary of the real world. ● This exhibition is composed of a presentation of an apartment which is put on the metal construction. With its significant presence in Seoul, apartment represents the residential parts of the urban space. The exhaustive compartment of the buildings draws patterns. People’s visual memory on things within such standardised system tends to be somewhat similar. My work is a translation of those phenomena into patterned images. Visualising personal image of a space in one's memory results to a creation of conceptual space. Therefore the video and graphic images on the screen relates to a virtual simulation of reality and shows how vain our life is in such standardised urban surrounding. ■ Kang Hyunseon
