Apart-scape

『Apart-scape』는 강현선의 여덟 번째 개인전이다. 서울대 졸업 후 영국에서 공부하고 돌아온 강현선은 지속적으로 실재와 가상이 혼재되어 만들어지는 현실에의 인식을 작업의 주제로 삼고 있다. 작가는 사진, 영상, 설치 등 다양한 매체를 통해 이 주제를 탐구해오고 있다. ● 이번 전시에서 슈펙스(Supex) 홀에 위치한 전시 공간 8개의 벽면은 사진 이미지로 가득 채워진다. 마치 파노라마처럼 아파트 풍경이 관람자 앞에 펼쳐진다. 사진 이미지 속의 옆으로 기울어진 아파트 창문으로는 또 다른 아파트 풍경이 겹쳐 보인다. 강현선은 우리가 사는 현실이 하나의 객관적 모습으로만 규정될 수 없고 개인의 다양한 경험, 욕망 등이 투영된 것임을 알고 있다. 그 경험과 욕망에는 현대사회의 여러 가상 세계에의 경험, 허구의 시각이미지들이 스며들어 있다. 현실은 그래서 고정되어 있지 않고 주체에 의해 끊임없이 재구성된다. 아파트 창문 위로 겹쳐지는 이미지들은 유리에 반사된 외부 이미지들처럼 보이지만 실상은 컴퓨터 편집기법에 의해 조작된 것들이다. 여러 테크놀로지에 의해 만들어진 시각 이미지의 변주들은 현실을 과장, 왜곡, 변형한 가상의 세계라고 할 수 있지만, 그것들은 우리가 현실을 받아들이고 이해하는데 영향을 끼치고 결국에 현실의 세계로 포섭된다. ● 전시 공간에 들어서는 관람자는 이전과는 다른 장소에 와 있는 몰입적 경험을 하게 될 것이다. 그 장소는 우리에게 익숙한 아파트로 가득찬 도시의 한복판이며, 실재와 가상의 세계가 얽혀있는 공간이기도 하다. 이번 전시를 통해 우리는 일상에서 접하는 다양한 시각 이미지들이 어떻게 현실을 인식하는지에 영향을 주는지를 목격하게 될 것이다. ■ 정소라

사람들은 '시각'으로 실재에 대해 판단하고자 하지만, 쏟아져 나오는 현대의 시각 이미지들에 효과가 덧입혀지고 소비되는 과정이 반복됨에 따라, 이미지에 대한 인식은 흐려지고 원본의 대상에 대한 파악과 의심이라는 의식과정도 쉽게 생략되고 있다. 우리는 실재가 사라지고 가상만이 존재하는 이미지들을 보게 된다. 이미지들은 '실재'의 존재를 알리거나 판단할 수 있게 하기 위한 것이 아니라, 우리가 실재가 되길 바라는 것들을 재현, 재생산하고 있다. 나는 작업을 통해 컴퓨터 그래픽 프로그램으로 조작된 도시 풍경을 갤러리 내부의 벽에 펼쳐내 보고자 하였다. 전시장의 벽은 마치 창문과 같이 세상을 비추는 역할을 하고, 이미지 속 아파트의 창문들은 다시 세상의 모습을 반사하여 비추는 과정을 반복하며 이 모든 것들이 실재 혹은 허상일 수 있음을 드러낸다. 우리는 현실 그대로의 세계보다 환상과 상상의 세계를 동경한다. 그러나 허상처럼 여겨지는 그것에 몰입과 깊이가 더해지는 순간, 진실의 모습을 발견하게 된다. 불가능한 가상 세계는 현실과 혼합되면서 가상이기 보다는 오히려 현실에 가까워지는 것이다. ■ 강현선

『Apart-scape』is artist, Kang, Hyunseon's 8th solo show. She graduated Seoul National University and studied in England. Her intension is in the awareness of a reality within the mixture of an actual and the imaginary. The artist has explored this issue using various media including photos, video works, and installations. ● The eight walls on the Supex hall will be covered in photo images. A panoramic view of an apartment will be spread out across the hall before the viewers' eyes. The reflection of the apartment's slanted window is another image of an apartment. Kang, Hyunseon understands that a reality in which we live cannot be defined in one image but it can reflect an individual's experience and their desire. These experience and desires were practiced through the modern society's virtual reality experiences and the visual image of its imaginary. Therefore, a reality is not a fixed image and can be restructured continuously by different individuals. The overlapped image reflected on the apartment window can be seen as the reflection of the another real world outside. But they are images made by computer graphics. A variation of these visual images can be considered a exaggerated, distorted, and transformed reality through the use of different technological tools. Nevertheless, these virtual images affect the way we accept and understand the reality, taking them into being part of the real world eventually. ● Viewers will experience the immersive state as they enter the exhibition space. This space will be the center of a city, full of apartments which we are familiar with. The space will also be representing a combined space of a real and a virtual world. The exhibition will allow us to discover how virtual images that we face in daily lives can affect the way we recognize the reality. ■ JUNGSORA

People use their 'vision' to judge the existence. However, they lose their visual grip on reality as well as skip the process of understanding and suspicion to the originality of objects as the modern society repeats the process of painting over visual images and consuming them. In the end, we look at images without reality. They do not inform or help people to understand the existence of 'reality', but reproduce what we want it to be as reality. My work spreads out the city's landscape made by computer graphic programs to the walls in the gallery. Walls light the world like windows, and windows in the images reflect the face of the world again. They imply that all the things can be real or imaginary. We admire the world of fantasy and imagine them more than the real world. However, when we are immersed in the imaginary world deeply, we come to face the true image of it in the end. When impossible virtual world is mixed with what is reality, the world appears closer to the reality itself. ■ KANGHYUNSEON
