김민영의 불빛, 삶의 숨결과 쉼의 미학을 그리다 ● 김민영 작품의 주인공은 '불빛'이다. 불빛의 종류는 여러 가지가 있겠지만, 그녀가 좇는 빛은 '인공적인 불빛'이란 점이 남다르다. 온 세상 어둠을 맞이한 밤을 밝히는 불빛이다. 그 빛은 마치 꺼져가는 생명에 새로운 가능성을 열어주는 듯하다. 그녀는 그 불빛으로 무엇을 말하려는 것일까? "희망은 밝고 환한 양초 불빛처럼 우리 인생의 행로를 장식하고 용기를 준다. 밤의 어둠이 짙을수록 그 빛은 더욱 밝다." 영국의 18세기 문학가 올리버 골드스미스(Oliver Goldsmith)의 말이다. 아마도 작가가 전하려는 불빛의 메시지도 이와 크게 다르지 않을 것이다. ● 흔히 빛이란 '스스로를 밝히는 현상을 통틀어 이르는 말'을 뜻한다. 그리고 빛은 동전의 양면처럼 늘 '어둠'이란 상대성을 달고 다닌다. 그런 의미에서 성경 창세기에 나오는 '빛이 있으라'라는 첫 대목도 '어둠이 심연을 덮은 세상을 그 빛으로 창조한다는 의미'를 담고 있을 것이다. 작가 역시 "빛이 있기에 모든 것은 따뜻함으로 살아 숨 쉬게 만들 수 있다. 그 생명들이 서로를 의지하고 공동체를 이루며, 따뜻한 소통을 이어가는 것도 바로 빛이 있기 때문"이라고 확신한다. ● 빛은 시간이나 관점에 따라 상반된 이중성을 지니고 있다. 낮의 (자연)빛은 '생명성ㆍ활동력ㆍ살아있음' 등의 인상을 전한다. 하지만 세상이 잠든 밤의 (인공)불빛은 전혀 다른 맥락이다. 그 밤의 불빛은 온 종일의 노곤함과 피로감을 지우고 재충전하기 위해 잠을 청하는데 흔들어 깨우는 격이다. 하지만 잠 못 이루는 밤의 불빛도 시간대에 따라 전혀 다른 감흥을 불러일으킨다. 똑같은 가로등이라도 초저녁의 불빛과 새벽녘의 불빛은 같을 수 없다. 작가가 작품에 불빛들을 어느 시간대에 등장시키고 있는 가를 관찰하는 것도 그녀의 작품을 제대로 이해하는 중요한 키포인트가 될 수 있다. ● 작품제목을 보면 그것에 담긴 속뜻을 어느 정도 짐작하게 된다. 작가는 주로 '오고가다(come & go)'와 '마을(village)' 시리즈를 선보인다. 전자는 어딘가로 부지런히 이동 중인 분주한 자동차 행렬들을 포착한 것이라면, 후자에는 시루 속의 마을처럼 집들이 다닥다닥 엉겨 붙어져 있어 서로의 체온이라도 느낄 정도이다. 그러면서도 둘의 공통점은 사람모습이 직접적으로 등장하지는 않는다. 말 그대로 정경(情景)을 보여주는 장면들이다. 마치 풍경을 바라보는 내 자신이 그 장면 속 주인공의 입장에 감정이입 될 것만 같다.

그래서일까, 김민영은 최근의 작품전 제목을 '불빛의 숨;쉼 Breathing Lights'로 잡았다. 작품의 주제의식을 돋보이게 하거나, 그 깊이를 더하는 요소로써 '불빛 이미지를 극대화 시키는 연출력'을 구사한 것이다. 단순히 불빛을 사실적으로 묘사하기보단, 어떻게 하면 불빛을 통해 따뜻한 온기와 다양한 감정을 자아낼 수 있을까 하는 작가적 고민이 엿보이는 대목이다. 한낮의 다채롭고 복잡다단했던 산만함은 어둠속에 그대로 잠재우고, 수많은 타인들의 추억들만 불빛에 녹여내었다. 우리는 그것을 통해 몽환적이고 아련한 카타르시스를 경험하게 된다. ● 김작가의 작품에서 또 하나 주목할 점은 '불빛을 향한 관점의 재해석'이다. 시간성과 공간성의 경계를 허물면서도 철저하게 '관찰자 시점'을 유지하고 있다. 이 점은 작품의 개별성이자 독창성의 근간을 이룬다. 무엇보다 '현실세계를 복제한 가상세계를 불빛으로 재포장했다'는 점에서 큰 흥미를 유발한다. 현실에 심상의 관념적 시선으로 포착한 메타포로 해석될 수도 있겠다. 처음에 김민영 작품을 첫 대면했을 때는 '가상 속에서의 감흥'이나, '실상과 허상의 이중성'이란 면이 잘 이해되지 않았다. 현장에서의 작품설치 방법에 따라 같은 그림이라도 전혀 다른 의외의 생경함을 자아낸다. ● 가령 야광 안료를 활용한 작품들이 특히 흥미롭다. 낮과 밤의 정경을 공존시켜 신비스런 장면을 연출해 고정관념과 상식을 깼던 르네 마그리트 조형어법이 연상된다. 김 작가 작품 속의 같은 풍경이라도 땅거미가 질 무렵 만나게 된 장면인 듯 싶었는데, 조명이 꺼지고 야광 상태로 보면 어느새 한밤 중으로 시간여행을 온 기분이 들게 한다. 전시장 안에 소형 집을 설치 해 놓았다. 그 집의 한 벽면에 작은 구멍이 있는데, 그 안을 들여다보면 벽면에 야광 빛을 발하는 그림들이 걸려 있다. 또한 타이머로 작동되는 라이트의 작동에 따라 다양한 시각효과가 연출되기도 한다. ● 결국 빛이 소재인 김작가의 회화나 설치작품들은 '생명에 대한 반추(反芻)'나 마찬가지이다. 또한 어둠과 맞선 불빛은 '새로운 희망의 표상'으로 작용하며, 따스한 정감을 샘솟게 하는 마중물의 역할을 하고 있다. 그저 잠깐 꺼져 있다가 켜지는 불빛이지만, 작가는 그 불빛으로 우리의 가슴에 '존재감에 대한 경의'를 새겨 넣고 있다. 이 전시에서 김 작가 작품들은 불빛 회화의 아우라(AURA)로 더없이 소중한 교감과 소통의 교훈을 전해주고 있다. ■ 김윤섭

Minyoung Kim's light that draws the breath of life and the aesthetics of rest ● 'Light' is the main character of the works of Minyoung Kim. While there are many kinds of light, the light that she seeks is an artificial light. It is the light that lights the night of the whole world. The light seems to open up new possibilities to fading life. What is her message with that light? "Hope, like the gleaming taper's light, adorns and cheers our way; and still, as darker grows the night, emits a brighter ray." It was the quote of Oliver Goldsmith, an English writer in the 18th century. Perhaps the message of the light that the writer is going to convey will not be much different. ● Light used to mean 'a word that mentions a phenomenon that reveals itself.' Like both sides of a coin, light always carries 'darkness.' In this regard, the first word of Genesis in the Bible, 'Let there be light', would also contain 'the meaning of creating deep and dark world with its light.' The writer also said; "since there is light, everything can be made to live with warmth. Thanks to light, those lives could depend on each other, form community and maintain communication." ● Light has a dual sense that is contradictory to each other in terms of time and viewpoint. (Natural) light of daytime conveys the impression of 'life, activity and livelihood.' But, (artificial) light of the night in the world is a totally different context. The light of the night is an ironical wake-up call to those who wish to take rest and to recharge of the tiredness of the whole day. However, the sleepless light of night may create a totally different inspiration depending on the time zone. As for the same street lights, early evening lights and dawn lights cannot be the same. It is an important key point to observe when the lights appear in order to understand her works properly.  ● The underlying meaning can be guessed from the title of the work. The artist presents 'Come &Go' and 'village' series mainly. While the former is to capture busy car passages moving somewhere, the latter is like a densely populated town where houses are cluttered together to feel the body temperature of each other. However, the common features of the two do not appear directly in the form of people. These are literally scenes. It is as if I myself watching landscape feel empathy to the figure in the scene. ● Therefore, Minyoung Kim made the title of the recent exhibition as 'Breathing Lights.' The artist maximizes 'the image of light' by showing off the sense of subject and by adding the depth. Instead of describing simple light in a realistic manner, it shows the artistic agony to make warmth and various emotions through light. The diverse and complicated distractions of the day were subdued in the darkness, and memories of many others were melted into the light. We experience a dreamy and dim catharsis through it.   ● Another thing to pay attention to Kim's work is the 'reinterpretation of perspective toward light.' It breaks border of time and space but keeps a strict 'observer point.' It is the foundation of the individuality and originality of the artwork. Furthermore, it is very interesting that 'the artist repackaged the virtual world cloned from the real world with the light.' It can be interpreted as a metaphor captured with an ideological perspective of imagination in reality. When I saw artist Kim for the first time, I first could not understand the meaning of 'inspiration in a virtual world' or 'duality of reality and illusion.' Depending on the method of installation of works at the field, the same picture can create a totally different unfamiliarity. ● It is, for example, especially interesting that the artist used luminous pigment for the works. It reminds of René Magritte's formative method of creating a mysterious scene that created mysterious scene and that broke stereotype and common sense by coexisting day and night scenes. Even though the same scenery in Kim's works seems to be the scene where the dusk meets at the end of the day, when the lights are turned off and the light is in a state of light, it makes me feel like a time travel in the middle of the night. There is a small house in the exhibition hall. There is a small hole in the wall of the house and there are pictures of glow on the wall. And, various visual effects are produced depending on the operation of the timer operated light. ● In conclusion, the paintings and installation works of Kim are the same as "reflection for life". Also, the light against the darkness acts as a 'symbol of new hope' and works as a fountain for warm sympathy. It is a light that is turned on and off for a while, but the artist inscribes 'respect for sense of existence' in our hearts with the light.
