Untitled(무제)로 파리에서 시작한 개인전은 3년마다 올려 일곱 번째를 맞이한다. 살아가는 삶의 이야기를 담아보려 하였고 이번 전시도 마찬가지다. 세상과 마주하면서 인간 본연의 인간성을 상실하지 않고 어떻게 주체적인 삶을 살아갈 수 있을까. 우리가 추구하는 보다 근원적인 모습은 어떠한 것인가. 전시가 겹겹이 오를수록 작품은 더 걸러져 단순함으로 낳기를 바라게 된다. 단순함은 선명한 세계의 투명함을 느낄 수 있을 것이다. 정신의 순수성과 인간성 회복에 대한 열망이기도 하다.

작품은 보는 이가 새로움을 발견하여 맨 처음으로 돌아가기를 바라는 회복이자 귀향이기도 하다. 작업은 그렸다 덧씌우기를 반복하면서 단순하게 만들려고 하였다. 흩어진 사물 혹은 사람을 감싸 안으면서 서로의 교차점을 찾아 회유하는 것으로 만들어져 갔다.

우리 삶의 현장에서는 생각과 행동이 하나 되지 못한 엇갈림은 무겁게 쌓여 갈 길을 멀게 한다. 안에서든 밖에서든 본래의 모습을 잃어 조화를 이루지 못한 채 남아있다. 그러나 우리가 딛고 있는 장(場)은 인간의 의지를 넘어 고지(高地)로 다다르기 위한 도구이자 디딤돌일 것이다. ■ 신향

I keep on painting. / One day, I will even forget / the thought of painting / so that only the act of painting remains. / Even so, // I may still be heading toward a destination / at which I have already arrived, / without knowing that I am there. ● I have been holding solo exhibitions in Paris every three years for the last two decades. Since my first "Untitled" exhibition, I have been trying to capture the stories of life in my works. How can one live a self-sufficient life without losing one's humanity in the face of this world? What is humanity's fundamental ideal we mortal beings try to approximate? ● Exhibition after exhibition, my desire grows stronger to make my works simpler. I think simplicity can reveal the world with greater focus and clarity. My wish for simplicity hides my thirst for the purity of the human spirit and humanity at large. ● The emotional intensity I bleed into my works is proportional to the strength of my desire for the viewer to discover something new in them, and a longing to return to his very beginnings. I have done my best to make these works as simple as possible, painting and re-painting again and again. The process is akin to gathering and embracing things or people that have become scattered, and persuading them to return to a place of interaction. ● Failure to achieve unity of thought and action on the fields of daily life pile on us like heavy burdens as we continue our long journey in this life. We have lost our true forms on the outside and inside alike, and remain discordant. Nevertheless, we may yet choose to think of the current station we are in as a stepping stone to overcoming the failures of our will and finally attain new heights. ■ SHINHYANG
