변덕스러운 땅 Capricious Land

건축이라는 단어가 한번 지으면 부수기 어려운 견고한 인상을 갖고 있는 것과 달리 한국사회에서 대부분의 건축은 '재건축 연한 30년'이 말해 주듯이 임시건축이다. 또한 땅의 용도가 언제 어떻게 변경될지 모르는 상황에서 변덕스러운 자본의 추이에 대응하기 위해 컨테이너나 비닐하우스, 조립식 창고 같은 가건물들이 개발을 기다리고 있는 풍경은 생활 곳곳에서 발견된다. 어쩌면 자본의 필요에 따라 언제 해고될지 모르는 비정규직의 삶을 가건물들이 대변하고 있는지도 모른다. 이러한 가건축에 대한 관심은 '계획된 진부화'(Planned Obsolescence)라는 개념에 빗대어 미래의 폐기물과 다름없는 주택에 관해 이야기 했던 작업과 건물을 짓기 위해 반드시 필요하지만 건물이 완성되면 사라지는 비계(飛階)에 관한 작업의 연장선상에 있다.

아이러니하게도 가건축의 주된 재료인 콘크리트는 우리의 주변에서 가장 흔하게 찾아볼 수 있지만 크게 인지하고 있지 않는 대표적인 물질이다. 페인트칠과 다양한 마감재를 사용한 치장들을 걷어내면 콘크리트의 맨살이 드러날 것이다. 이러한 콘크리트를 관찰과 사색의 대상으로 삼고 그것을 둘러싼 정치학과 의미를 다각도로 살펴보고자 한다. 우리 환경을 구성하는 대부분의 사물인 시멘트가 어떻게 만들어지고 사용되고 있는가를 살펴보는 것을 통해 우리 삶을 담는 그릇이 무엇인가를 생각해 볼 수 있을 것이다. ● 개발이 한창 진행 중이거나 개발을 기다리고 있는 고양시 벽제와 같은 지역은 가건물의 땅이나 다름없다. 조립식 창고 건물을 세우거나 컨테이너를 하나 갖다 놓고 이런 저런 용도로 사용되는 땅들은 여지저기 산재해 있다. 그런가 하면 택지개발지구로 지정될 경우 상전벽해와 같은 변화가 일어나기도 한다. 논, 밭, 비닐하우스가 가득했던 곳에 아파트가 들어서고 그 과정에서 마을 전체가 서서히 폐허가 되기도 한다. 변덕스러운 땅에서 일어나는 사건들을 회화에 적용시켜 개발의 언어가 회화가 되고 회화의 언어가 폐허가 되는 순간을 포착하고자 한다.

이러한 작업들은 또한 도시 내부에서 튕겨져 나온 것들, 도시 안으로 진입하지 못한 것들, 도시의 삶을 지탱하기 위해 반드시 존재해야 하지만 가려져 있는 것들과 같은 '변두리'의 이야기를 담고 있다. 건축이라는 행위를 통해서 드러나는 이면의 힘과 구조를 가시화하고 우리의 일상공간이 어떻게 구축되었는지 살펴보고자 하는 본인의 작업은 자본과 국가의 논리에 따라 생성되고 변화되는 공간에서 우리의 삶을 어떻게 영위해 나아갈 것인가에 대한 문제의식을 담고 있다. 부동산에 압도된 삶은 살아가는 우리에게 일상적인 공간과 흔한 사물에 대해 숙고해 볼 수 있는 기회를 제공할 수 있길 바란다. ■ 김지은

While the implication of "architecture" suggests something solid that is hard to be destroyed once it has been built, most buildings in Korean society are somewhat temporary as the term "reconstruction period thirty years" suggests. In this unpredictable environment where land use may change at any time in order to cope with fluctuations of capital, we are surrounded by temporary buildings such as containers, plastic greenhouses, prefabricated storages waiting for a development plan. These temporary buildings seem to represent the life of temporary employees who might be fired at any time according to the logic of capital. My interest in temporary buildings is in line with my previous work that addressed the issues of houses that are no better than future waste, referring to the concept of "planned obsolescence," and another work that dealt with scaffolding, an essential tool for construction destined to disappear on completion of the building. ● Ironically, concrete, the main material for temporary buildings is one of the most common materials we encounter in our daily environment without consciously noticing it. Once paint and various finishing materials are removed, the bare concrete skin will be revealed. Taking concrete as a subject of observation and contemplation, I want to explore the politics and meanings surrounding it from a multi-faceted perspective. An investigation on how cement, one of the most common materials constructing our environment, is manufactured and used might suggest an insight into a "receptacle" that contains our life. ● Areas such as Byeokje in Goyang City undergoing or awaiting development are filled with temporary buildings. Pre-fabricated storages or containers scattered around the land are used for various purposes. On the other hand, an area that is chosen as the housing development district also goes through dramatic changes. Rice paddies, fields, lots for greenhouses turn into apartment complexes, and an entire village might become desolate in this process. Reflecting on these events happening on this capricious land, I want to capture the moment when the language of development becomes a painting and the language of painting falls into ruin in turn. ● These works show stories of the "marginalized" structures that were thrown out of the city, that failed to enter the city, and that exist to support the city but in an invisible way. Visualizing the hidden power and structure through the practice of architecture and exploring the way our daily space is constructed, my work raises questions about how we should lead our life in this environment that is created and transformed according to the logic of capital and nation. I hope my work will provide an opportunity to contemplate our daily space and ordinary things while living a life dominated by the calculation of real estate. ■ Ji Eun Kim
