자하미술관은 2012년 『ZAHARTIST PROJECT』를 시작으로 함께 성장해 나갈 작가를 발굴 및 지원하는 프로젝트로 2016 ZAHARTIST 정지연(Sion Jeong) 작가를 선정하였다. 정지연 작가는 독일 쾰른 대학에서 매체예술을 전공하였으며 귀국 후, 올해 『Com·respond』展 을 소개하며 본격적인 작업 활동을 펼쳐 나가고 있다. 이번 전시에서는 (2015), 「Concrescence」,「Karat」 (2016),「Com ∙ respond」 설치작품과 다수의 드로잉을 선보인다. 작가는 스테인레스 스틸과 유리판 조형물, 화학용액, 전기 장치 등 일상에서 다소 접하기 어려운 이질적인 소재를 인간 고유의 감각기관으로 대체시키며 시각, 촉각, 청각 등의 감각기관 매커니즘에 대한 시청각적 미의식을 형상화 하는 실험적 작업을 선보인다. 이를 위해 인간의 복합적인 지각 능력을 기계장치와 화학용액등으로 대체 하여 도해(圖解)를 시도하는데 이러한 과정은 연구자의 모습이 오버랩 될 정도로 과학적 이론을 베이스로 하기도 하며 논리적 학습을 동행한다. ● 전시 명은 『• — | 』展으로 천지인 즉 만물을 구성하는 요소인 하늘과 땅 사람을 통틀어 부르는 말을 인용하였다. 이는 개별의 다수가 하나로 합생하려는 「Concrescence」(합생) 작품을 비롯하여 작가가 만들어낸 '소리몸'(음체 시리즈)의 주제이자 인간에 중점을 둔 작가의 관심을 암시한다. 한국에서는 처음 선보이는 2015년 작품 「Concrescence」(합생)은 인왕산 바로 아래 자리 잡은 미술관의 입지적 특성과 맞물려 전시장 내에 설치된 작품이 내보내는 사운드와 반사작용으로 인한 돌아오는 반사음을 극대화한다. 입구에 겹겹이 설치된 흰색의 오간자 천을 지나면 전시장 한가운데에 3미터에 이르는 소리몸(음체)과 그리고 내부로부터 생성된 (양성 피드백 기반의 사운드) 울림이 관객을 마주한다. 작업 내에서 발생하는 사운드와 반사되는 빛은 원시적인 무언가를 가로지르며 우리를 관통하게 함과 동시에 낯선 시공간에 포용되는 경험을 가능하게 한다. 이처럼 직관에 최초로 반응하는 소리와 빛이라는 요소는 그를 둘러싼 이차원과 삼차원의 경계를 가로지르며 소리몸(음체)에 대한 지각 과정으로 제시되며 또 하나의 합생을 시도한다. ■ 자하미술관

스테인리스의 물질적 특성을 활용한 키네틱 소리 설치 작업으로 실시간의 내부로부터의 생성되는 소리를 변주해 간다. 무량한 회귀 체계의 스스로의 목소리를 찾아가는 과정을 마치 근육 수축 과정과 숨을 쉬는 듯한 움직임으로 이어 나간다. 이 과정 속에서, 이제껏 무성의 한 물질의 잠재성, 무거운 침묵은 펼쳐질 것이다.

높이가 다른 유리판 조형물이 상이(相異) 한 무게 속에서 서로의 마디들로 큰 긴장감을 유지한 채 구성되어 세워진다. 또한 그 유리 조형 표면에 음각(陰刻) 된 한 전주곡(前奏曲)과도 같은 드로잉은 또다시 그림자이며 동시에 투영된 빛 마디로 공간에 펼쳐질 것이다.

카라트는 결정들이 성장해 가는 하나의 인공체이다. 이 내부에 유기체적인 형체로 빛을 몸으로 한 실시간의 결정화를 연주해간다. 10개의 소리관과 9개의 씨앗 형체의 유리들로 구성되어 있으며, 이 모든 구성요소 안에 빛들이 심어져 있다. 한 삶의 은유인 듯, 실시간 과정의 빛과 소리는 이 체계의 숨결을 이어가며, 어떤 가상계의 생성에 관한 한 이야기를 들려줄 것이다. ● 단 한 번도 태어날 수도 죽을 수도 없는 가상의 나무. 결정화를 위한 화학 용액과 전기 재료, 그림자이면서 동시에 빛의 출발점이 되는 어떤 접점. 상호작용을 위한 유리관과 기타 장비. 무한한 목소리를 생성해내려 하는 소리몸의 구현, 그 실현을 위한 메탈들의 원동력과 귀환 체계. 나의 작업은 전시 공간에서 시작도 끝도 없이 계속해서 스스로 변주해 간다. 관객들이 그들의 몸으로 실시간 프로세스를 자유롭게 지각할 수 있고 또한 공간의 한 부분으로 나의 작업과 소통될 수 있기를 바란다. ■ 정지연

Zaha Museum has been supporting artists since 2012 with 『ZAHARTIST PROJECT』 and we are very pleased to introduce the ZAHARTIST Sion Jeong. Sion Jeong has a Master's degree in Media and Fine Arts at Academy of Media Arts Cologne and since her return to Korea, she is focusing on her art work by introducing 『Com·respond』 exhibition. This exhibition contains many drawing work and installation work of 「Concrescence」 (2015), 「Karat」 (2016) and 「Com·respond」 (2016). The Artist substitutes materials that are uneasy to encounter in life such as stainless steel, an installation of glass panels, chemical liquid, electronic device into human's inherent sensory organs. Also the Artist demonstrates her experimental work with embodying audiovisual art by sensory organ mechanism as sight, tactility, and auditory. The progress of substituting human's complex perception ability into machine and chemical liquid for building diagrammatic chart is based on scientific theory plus logic study which brings an image of the researcher. ● The title of the exhibition is 『• — | 』 which throughout Sky, Earth and Human in one word Chun-Ji-In. The title implies the artist's 'Concrescence' series and the theme of 'Sound body' series with emphasis on the subject of 'Human'. The Art work 「Concrescence」made in 2015 makes Sion Jeong's first appearance in Korea. This exhibition maximizes reflection-tone from the installation's output sound and this engages with the characteristic of Zaha Museum's location which is placed right underneath Mount Inwang. When the viewers pass through the Organza fabric at the entrance, they can be faced with the 3 Meter Sound-body placed in the middle of the exhibition hall and vibration (the sound based on positive feedback) from the installation's own internal structure. The sound from the internal structure of the Art work and reflected light across through the viewers with some kind of primitive thing and let the viewers to be embraced by unfamiliar space-time at the same time. The element of sound and light which respond to the intuition cut through the boarder of 2 dimensions and 3 dimensions also this suggests the progress of perceiving Sound-body with attempting another Concrescence. ■ ZAHA MUSEUM

Concrescence is a kinetic sound installation utilizing the physical properties of stainless steel sheet which plays a real-time variation from its inside. The installation continues to move as muscles in contraction and seem to breathe as the process of searching the measureless return system's own voice. The potential of a material and heavy silence will spread out in this practice. ● Com ∙ respond is an installation of glass panels in different heights with dissemblance weight which maintains great tension between each joint. The drawings on the surface of glass panels as intaglio print of a prelude will spread out in the space with shadows and light joints. ● "Karat" consists of 10 sound tubes and 9 teardrop shape glasses and an organism-like crystal form can be found inside of them: a metaphor of life. The real-time process of breathing-like light and sound of "Karat" sensualizes the phenomenon of this sphere and indicates the development of an imaginary sphere. ● An imaginary tree that can not be born or to be dead not even once and to crystallize it, chemical liquid and electronic materials are needed. An agreement can be a start point of a light and a shadow at the same moment, and glass tubes with electronic equipment is needed for the agreement's interaction. Materializing the Sound-body to form infinite voice with impetus of metals and return system for its realization. My work plays endless variation with no beginning or end by itself at the exhibition hall. The viewers can perceive the real-time process with their own body freely and I hope to communicate with them through my work within the space. ■ Sion Jeong
