학제간 융합예술가로서 재조명하는 음악가 메시앙과 초현실주의 미술가 레메디오스 바로 이재욱 개인전 『리듬, 색, 새소리 연구』가 스페이스 오뉴월에서 2016년 8월 5일부터 8월 25일까지 열린다. 20세기 가장 영향력 있는 작곡가 중 한 명인 올리비에 메시앙(Olivier Messiaen)과 스페인 출생의 초현실주의 화가 레메디오스 바로(Remedios Varo)를 대안적 역사의 관점에서 주목한 이번 전시에서 작가는 두 천재 예술가의 흥미로운 교차점에 착안해 재해석한 영상 1점, 설치 2점, 드로잉 5점 등 총 8점의 작품을 선보인다.

작가는 왜 이 두 예술가에 천착했을까? 1908년 12월, 같은 시기에 태어났다는 운명론적 사실 외에도 둘 다 초현실주의에 많은 영향을 받았으며 예술적 영감을 물리학 등 비예술 분야를 통해 얻고자 했다는 공통점을 들 수 있다. 그들의 시도는 오늘날 현대미술에서 낯설지 않은 학제간 융합과도 맞닿아 있다. 동시대 예술은 현대의 복잡한 세계를 표현하기 위한 방법으로 여러 분야의 협업을 시도하고 있는데 예술을 통한 이런 학제간의 교류는 예술가의 영역을 더욱 확장시키고 있다. 이런 관점에서 최근 이재욱의 활동은 이런 현대미술의 경향성을 잘 나타낸다. 그는 예술가의 고유영역인 작품 생산 외에 다양한 학술 및 출판 활동을 통해 예술이 단순히 사회적 현상을 비추는 것뿐 아니라 실제 지식을 생산하는 주도적 역할을 어떻게 감당할 수 있는지 보여주고 있다.

그의 이런 태도는 메시앙에게 영감을 줬던 미국 유타주의 협곡과 바로의 회화적 소재를 교차시켜 만든 영상 작품 「리듬, 색, 새소리 연구」에서 두드러진다. 작가는 새로운 예술 작품의 창조적 주체로 자신을 위치시키기보다 두 예술가를 과거로부터 되살려 협업을 주선하는 매개자(혹은 기획자)로 역할한다. 이는 주류 역사관에서 배제된 과거의 인물과 연구에 주목하고 이를 재배치하는 학술 연구자로서의 성격을 띤다. 그의 이런 시도는 국내에 생소했던 '오브제 지향 존재론(Object Oriented Ontology)*'에 대한 개념을 소개했던 「오브제 이론(2015)」과 그 흐름을 같이 하고 있다. 이 전시가 작가의 작품 세계와 연관된 철학적 이론을 소개하는 성격이 짙었다면 이번 전시는 메시앙이 지녔다는 공감각적 재능 즉, 색을 통해 특정한 소리를 연상하는 능력으로 작곡한 음악에서 영감을 얻은 드로잉 작품과 「리듬과 색, 새소리」 영상 작품 속 이미지를 재연하는 플루트 연주 퍼포먼스 등의 다양한 작품을 포함하고 있다. 특히 전시 연계 프로그램으로 이재욱 작가와 최근 세계적인 주목을 받고 있는 젊은 철학자 에론 슈스터(Aaron Schuster)와의 대담 '들뢰즈(Deleuze)가 본 메시앙'이 오뉴월 이주헌(스페이스 오뉴월 프로젝트 공간)에서 열릴 예정이다. ■ 송고은

Revisiting Musician Olivier Messiaen and Surrealist Artist Remedios Varo Through the Lens of the Interdisciplinary Jaewook Lee's solo exhibition, Treatise on Rhythm, Color, and Birdsong, takes place at Space O'NewWall from August 8, 2016 to August 25, 2016. As an alternative history, this show revisits Olivier Messiaen, one of the most influential composers of the 20th century, and Spanish-born Mexican surrealist painter Remedios Varo. Lee presents a video, two installations, and five drawings that focus on the interesting intersection between the two genius artists. ● Why does Lee focus on the two artists? Besides the coincidental fact that they were both born in December 1908, they both sought artistic inspirations from other fields of knowledge such as science. Their approach fits today's commonly accepted notion of the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary art. Contemporary art attempts to collaborate with other fields to express today's complex world. This interdisciplinary approach expands the sphere of art more broadly. In this sense, Jaewook Lee's recent works well represent this current of contemporary art. Lee not just produces art objects, but also writes and does scholarly research, showing how art has a leading role in knowledge production beyond mere representations of social phenomena. ● Lee's attitude is clearly seen in his video, Treatise on Rhythm, Color, and Birdsong (2016), which sheds light on the intersection between Utah's canyons, which inspired Messiaen's music and the elements of Varo's paintings. Lee does not position himself as a producer of art objects, but a mediator or curator who facilitates interactions among different fields by reviving the two artists from the past. Lee works as a researcher who focuses on artists of the past who have been marginalized from the canonical art history and gives them new meanings. This approach was also shown in his pervious exhibition, Object Theory (2015), which introduced "Object-Oriented Ontology" to the Korean art world. While the previous show focused more on introducing the philosophical background, this show presents various works such as drawings inspired by Messiaen's synesthesia–the ability to hear sound from colors and a live flute performance from Lee's video, Treatise on Rhythm, Color, and Birdsong (2016). Especially, internationally recognized philosopher Aaron Schuster will speak about "Deleuze's interpretation on Messiaen" at O'NewWall E'juheon (Space O'NewWall Project Space) as part of the exhibition. ■ Goeun Song
