두산갤러리 뉴욕은 2016년 5월 19일부터 6월 23일까지 제5회 두산 연강예술상 수상작가 중의 한 명인 이윤성의 개인전을 개최한다. ● 이번 전시에서는 서양 명화의 주제들을 만화적 형식으로 재해석한 「NU-TYPE」 작품과 회화적 표현 기법과 조형적 탐구를 다룬 「NU-FRAME」 작품을 선별하여 「NU」라는 제목으로 한 자리에서 선보이고자 한다.

이윤성은 한국의 문화 중 일본으로부터 유입된 '서브 컬쳐'를 작품의 소재로 삼아 순수회화로 재구성하는 작업을 해왔다. ● 초기 작품의 주제 「NU-TYPE」는 '새로운 인류'라는 뜻으로 일본 만화에서 빌려온 용어다. 작가는 서양의 전통 회화에서 반복되는 특정한 양식을 만화에서 반복되는 클리쉐와 접목함으로써 두 양식의 이질적인 차이점을 극복하고 회화의 새로운 형식을 탐구하고자 하였다.

이후 발표한 「NU-FRAME」에서 작가는 만화책과 디지털 게임에서 사용하는 프레임 분할법을 회화에 적용했다. 만화와 디지털 게임은 3차원의 세계를 2차원적 평면에 어떻게 재현할 것인가를 고민했다는 점에서 서양 회화와 유사하지만 작가는 일본 만화계에서 자생적으로 발전한 도형적 프레임 분할을 회화의 캔버스에 적용함으로써 새로운 관점의 조형어법을 제시하고자 한다. ● 일례로 Danae(2015)는 캔버스를 3개로 나누고 다나에의 상반된 표정을 두 개의 캔버스에 병치한 후 균질한 색을 표면에 쌓아 올려 전통적인 원근감이 제거된 새로운 평면 형식을 만들어 내고자 하였다. 최근 한국에서는 이윤성처럼 만화, 온라인 게임 등을 바탕으로 젊은이들 사이에서 대중화된 '서브 컬쳐'가 현대미술의 중요한 소재로 등장하고 있는데 이번 전시를 통하여 그 현황과 앞으로의 전개 방향에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. ● 이윤성(b. 1985)은 중앙대학교 서양화과를 졸업하였다. 두산갤러리 서울(2015, 서울, 한국), 메이크샵아트 스페이스(2014, 파주, 한국)에서 개인전을 개최하였고, 커먼센터(2014, 서울, 한국), 갤러리 진선(2014, 서울, 한국), 메이크샵아트 스페이스(2013, 파주, 한국), 유진갤러리(2012, 서울, 한국), 대안공간 팀 프리뷰(2011, 서울, 한국), 갤러리 두루(2011, 서울, 한국), 공평아트센터(2010, 서울, 한국)의 그룹전에 참여하였다. ■ 두산갤러리 뉴욕

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to present the solo exhibition of Yunsung Lee, a recipient of the 5th annual DOOSAN Artist Award, from May 19th through June 23rd, 2016. ● This exhibition comprises of 「NU-TYPE」, which takes subject matter from Western master paintings reinterpreted into Japanese animation form, as well as 「NU-FRAME」, which is an exploration of painterly and figurative methods of expression. Thus, the exhibition is titled "NU," to represent the selection of works on display. ● Yunsung Lee has been using the subculture within Korean culture that was brought in from Japan as the material for his work, reconstituting the subject into fine art. ● His early series 「NU-TYPE」 stands for "new humanity," a terminology that is borrowed from Japanese animation. The artist joins together the specific recurrent styles within traditional Western painting with recurrent cliché's from Japanese comics and animation, attempting to overcome their distinctions and disparities in order to search for and seek out a new form and language of painting. ● In his later series 「NU-FRAME」, Lee applies the method of segmenting the frame as used in comic books and digital games into his paintings. Comics and digital games both consider how to depict three-dimensional worlds into a two dimensional surface, and in that way it is similar to Western painting. However, as the artist employs the method of frame segmentation that naturally developed within the Japanese comic world into his canvases, he is able to suggest a new visual language and point of view. ● For instance, in Danae (2015), the canvas is divided into three segments, then Danae's two opposing facial expressions are juxtaposed within two canvases. Then, homogenous colors are layered onto the surface, removing a sense of traditional perspective, creating a very flat image. ● Recently, as the subculture of Japanese comics and online games become more mainstream, there has been an emergence within Korean contemporary art to use these as the context and subject matter of their work. This exhibition will provide a unique opportunity to observe this current situation and its future direction. ● Yunsung Lee (b. 1985) received his B.F.A in Painting from Chungang University. He has held solo exhibitions at DOOSAN Gallery Seoul (2015, Seoul, Korea) and Makeshop Art Space (2014, Paju, Korea).
