파란 봄 이야기

추억의 조각 만들기 ● 나의 작업은 유년시절 놀던 기억들을 수집하는 것에서 출발한다. 제주도 감귤 과수원, 노란 대문, 마음껏 뛰어놀 수 있었던 넓은 땅... 어린시절 나는 하늘, 바다, 흙속에 있었다. 삭막한 도시 생활 속에서 막연하게 꿈꾸는 휴식의 공간이 아닌 나의 기억 속에 자리 잡은 추억의 조각들을 하나하나 수집하는 것이 내 작업의 출발이다. 내가 조각내어 나타내는 이미지들은 하나의 조각이었을 때는 의미를 지니지 못한다. 하지만 수많은 조각들이 모이고 모여 만들어낸 화면은 강렬한 에너지와 함께 새로운 의미를 만들어 낸다.

이런 작업을 위해 선택한 매체가 바로 오일 파스텔이다. 이 재료는 현재의 나와 과거의 나를 이어주는 중요한 수단이 된다. 어릴 적 나는 무엇인가 집중해서 색칠하고 반듯하게 오리는 행위를 즐겼었다. 색칠공부와 종이 인형은 나의 이런 욕구를 충족시켜 주기에 충분했다. 이런 경험의 기억들은 나의 작업 과정 속에서 그대로 나타난다. 나는 붓 대신 칼로 모든 면을 만들어 낸다. 테이핑을 한 후 칼로 오려낸 구멍 속에 오일 파스텔을 아주 빽빽하게 칠해 채우고 손으로 하나하나 문지른 후 테이프를 떼어낸다. 하나의 조각을 만들기 위해서는 한 번의 행위가 필요하다. 마치 퍼즐을 맞추듯이 하나하나의 조각을 만들고 그 조각들이 모여 한 장의 그림이 완성된다. 끈기를 요하는 집요한 작업 과정이지만 나에게는 향수를 자극하는 놀이와 같다. 칼로 무엇인가를 오리는 행위로 난 나만의 단위를 만들어 내기 시작했다. 칼로 오려내어 만들어진 면을 좀 더 작은 단위의 분할된 면으로 만들고, 사실적인 이미지와 내가 만들어낸 추상적인 단위를 조합시켜 새로운 몽타주를 만들어 내는 것이다.

작업의 소재 역시 다양해 졌다. 골목길의 풍경들은 자연과의 만남으로 더 넓은 공간으로 진출하고 보는 이에게 휴식을 안겨준다. 하나하나의 조각이 모여서 만들어내는 추억의 오리기와 색칠하기는 똑같이 바라보는 풍경을 나만의 이야기로 만들어 준다.나는 작업을 통해서 모든 사람들은 제각각의 마음속에 저마다 색을 지닌 풍경이 있음을 이야기하고 싶다. 그리고 그 추억의 조각 속에서 삶의 휴식을 느낄 수 있기를 기대해 본다. ■ 김미량

Collecting the Pieces of Memories ● My work starts with collecting the memory pieces of my childhood, especially when I had fun. The tangerine orchard in Jeju Island, the yellow gate, and the wide field I could romp around… I was under the sky, in the sea, and on the earth. I begin my work by gathering the pieces of memories resting in my mind, not in a vague getaway I dream of in the dreary city life. The images I produce in pieces hardly get any meaning by the piece itself, but they create the canvas full of powerful energy with the pieces altogether. ● I chose oil pastel as a medium to do it. It is the important way to connect my past and present. When I was a child, I enjoyed coloring things precisely or cutting things neatly. Coloring books and paper dolls were just enough to satisfy the needs. The memories of those experiences are wholly reflected in my work process. I create surfaces with a knife instead of a brush. After putting some tape on, I cut out a hole, then fill it up with oil pastel. I take it off after rubbing it by hand. This process needs to be done to make each piece. Like putting the puzzle together, I make little pieces, and they compose one painting. Such work process requires patience and persistence, but it’s like a nostalgic game for me. I started to set my own measure by cutting things with a knife. A surface which I made with a knife is divided into smaller units, and I create a new montage with a realistic image and the abstract units. Also, the subject matters have been diversified. The alleyway expands towards an open space, and as it meets the nature, it relaxes the viewer. Cutting and coloring the pieces of memories turn the same old everyday scenery into a unique story of mine. ● Through my work, I want to say that everyone has their own scenery with its own color in their heart. Therefore I hope the viewers could find relaxation in life savoring the pieces of memories. ■ KIMMIRYANG
