Floating Wonderland ● 화려한 안경, 꽃과 나비, 알 수 없는 미소와 함께 언뜻 보이는 교정기는 김지희 작가의 작품을 어우르는 상징적인 코드이다. 그녀는 한국의 전통 종이인 장지 위에 현대적인 주제를 가지고 몸통이 없이 부유하는 정면의 얼굴, 사람이지만 사람 같지 않은 인위적인 표현을 통해 주제의식을 명료하게 전달해오고 있다. 화려하고 장식적인 모습들은 사람들을 매료시키기에 충분하고, 인물의 미소 속에 숨겨진 불편한 작은 교정기들은 기이한 호기심으로 동요하는 자신을 발견하기에 충분하다.

그녀의 작품은 우리가 모르는 사이 학습 받은 욕망과 본연의 욕망 사이의 혼돈으로부터 시작된다. 커다랗고 반짝이는 장식들이 가득 찬 안경으로 진실을 이야기 하는 눈을 가린 채 우리 앞에 미소를 짓고 있는 인물의 모습은, 인간이 추구하려는 소위 학습 받은 욕망을 나타낸다. 더 빛나는 삶을 향한 인간의 욕망이 그의 커다란 안경을 통해 더 크고 더 화려하게 드러나는 것이다. 그러나 그것도 잠시, 시선을 조금만 내려 작품을 자세히 바라보면 어딘가 불편하고 어색한 미소를 짓고 있는 인물이 자기자신을 억압하고 있는 교정기를 착용하고 있는 것을 발견 할 수 있다. 작가는 이러한 찰나의 순간, 틈새를 이용하여 우리에게 그녀가 이야기 하고 싶던 '그 욕망이 진정 자기 자신이 바라는 욕망인가?'에 대한 질문을 던진다. 타자의 시선에서 정의된 기준을 의미하는 교정기는 삐뚤삐뚤한 치아를 가지런하게 만드는 욕망의 도구로서, 인간이 외부에서 느낀 환경의 기준에 목표를 가지고 자기 자신을 맞추어가려는 것을 상징한다. 보통 사람들이 외부의 기준과 기대에 충족되는 좋은 학교, 좋은 직장을 목표를 삼고 나아가려는 욕구가 한 예이다. 하지만 결론적으로 그것들의 진정성은 판단할 겨를이 없다. 작가는 이렇게 작품 속의 인물에게 하나의 기준으로서 교정기를 착용하게 하고, 서로 다른 두 가지의 욕망에 대한 이야기를 한다. 화려한 안경에 묘사된 텍스트와 이미지들이 함께 모여 이것이 진정 내가 바라는 욕망인가, 혹, 학습된 욕망은 아닌가에 대한 질문을 던진다.

한편, 최근 들어 그녀의 작품 속에 여러 글자들이 등장한다. 그녀는 '福' 글자, 잉어, 모란 등을 전통적인 조형요소를 통해 부귀영화, 무병장수, 입신양명을 향한 인간의 염원을 드러냈다. 초기 미소 뒤에 숨겨진 현대들의 가면성(페르소나)을 통해 '현대인의 고독과 모순'을 표현했던 그녀의 이야기들은 점차 발전하여 인간 본연의 '욕망'과 '존재'의 화두로 심화되었다. 화면은 더욱 더 화려하게 장식되었고, 인물의 배경 뒤로 꽃과 나비를 그려 이내 금방 스러져버릴 가장 아름다운 찰나의 시간을 그려냈다. 또한, 그녀는 인간이 염원하는 풍요롭고 행복한 삶은, 비단 현대인들에게만 국한된 것이 아닌 전통적인 관습에서도 쉽게 찾아 볼 수 있는 시간을 초월한 바람이라는 것을 전통적인 도상을 통해 드러냈다. 그리고 유한한 시간을 살아가는 현대인들의 욕망을 왕관과 보석과 같은 강렬한 조형요소로 표현하였다. 그것들은 우리가 진정으로 염원해야 할 욕망에 대한 문제를 생각을 하게 하고, 그 존재가 영원하지 않기에 우리는 더욱 삶에 대한 이상향(Wonderland)을 좇아 부유하며 살아간다는 것을 이야기 한다.

따라서 그녀는 이번 전시에 '욕망'과 '존재'라는 화두를 가지고 미소 짓는 인물과 글자들을 이용한 작품을 선보여 인간은 보석과 같은 물질적인 욕망을 추구하며 살아가지만, 결국 현실을 이상향(Wonderland)으로 만드는 것은 자기 자신의 마음속에 있다는 메시지를 전달한다.

미소 짓는 인물의 모습이 교정(기준)의 아픔을 참아내며 내면과는 다른 표정을 짓는 인위적인 미소로 읽을 수 있지만, 그래도 그 표현이 웃음이라는 점에서 희망적이다. 그녀가 제시한 시간을 초월한 '존재'와 '욕망'에 대한 질문은, 언제 사라질지 모르는 찰나의 시간 속에서 끊임없이 욕망하고 타자의 시선에 맞추어 살아가는 사람들에게 진정성에 대한 이야기를 한다. 하지만 우리가 짓는 어색한 미소도 그 미소로서 우리는 다시 웃을 수 있게 된다. 그래서 희망적이다. 그녀의 작품 속에 녹아 든 '좋은 반찬은 두부 오이 생강 나물, 훌륭한 모임은 부부와 아들딸 손자' 라는 추사 김정희 말년의 수작 '대팽두부'의 내용처럼, 어쩌면 가장 빛나는 순간은 늘 우리 곁에 있었는지도 모른다. 본 전시를 통해 진정 우리가 추구하는 이상향(Wonderland)에 대해 고민해 보는 시간을 갖고 진실된 미소를 지어보길 바란다. ■ 김희진

Glamorous glasses, flowers and butterflies are the symbolic imageries of Kim, Jihee's artwork along with mysterious smile and peeping braces. The artist consciously express her modern theme by depicting front faces without bodies made to look man-made on Korean traditional paper. The glamorous and decorative features are enough to attract viewers and so do the braces hidden behind the smile make them unrest with curiosity. ● Her works begin from the chaos between acquired desire and natural desire. The figure smiling and wearing glasses covered with huge and sparkling ornaments that hide the truth-telling eyes portray the acquired desire. The desire to live bigger and glorious life is revealed through the highly decorated glasses. ● Our eyes move downward to notice this figure with slightly awkward smile is wearing braces which seem oppressive. Through this moment of discovery, the artist questions whether this desire honestly comes from what we want. The braces straightening the crooked teeth symbolize the means of desire to fit oneself to the standard shaped by others and surroundings. Driving oneself to get into good school and to get great job would be an example of being influenced by such desire without considering its veracity. The combined imagery depicted on Kim Jihee's paintings helps the viewers question whether the desire they hold dear to their heart has been taught. ● Most recent works of the artist display numerous Chinese characters. She has rendered the word 'Luck' in Chinese character with traditional motifs such as carps and peonies to display hankering for wealth and honor, health and longevity, and personal advancement. The artist has developed her earlier theme, revealing solitude and self-contradiction of contemporaries hidden behind the modern personae, to intrinsic desire and human existence. Her tableau has become even more elaborate. Flowers and butterflies decorating the background are depicting the most vulnerable and yet beautiful moment of life. Through employing traditional motifs, she has illustrated that the hankering for happy and affluent life continues over times. Fiercely depicted jewels and crowns represent the longing of mortal beings. Kim Jihee suggests the viewers should figure out what they honestly want with their limited time. Also because of the very nature of human, we should follow the "Wonderland" floating through life. ● The smile on the figures may seem to come from phony smile masking the pain caused by braces. However the fact that it is a smile shows a little bit of hope on our part. Questions continuously brought up by the artist on 'existence' and 'desire' dealt with veracity of people chasing after the desire set by others with their clearly limited time. Nevertheless, the awkward smile is still a smile and thus hopeful. As ChuSa Kim Jung-hee noted in one of his later works, the most brilliant moment of our lives are closer than we may realize. Through this exhibition, we could take a moment to contemplate on the 'Wonderland' of our true seeking and find our sincere smile. ■ KIMHEEJIN
