두산갤러리 뉴욕은 4월 14일부터 5월 12일까지 제5회 두산 연강예술상 수상작가 중의 한 명인 강동주의 개인전을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 작가의 뉴욕 데뷔 전으로서 지금까지 해왔던 <달 드로잉>(2013), <빛 드로잉>(2015), <땅바닥 드로잉>(2015) 중 다수의 작품을 선별하여 보여줄 예정이다. ● 강동주는 서울 곳곳을 관찰하고 시간에 따라 조금씩 변화하는 도시의 단면을 기록하는 작업을 해왔다. 작가는 밝은 빛에 의해 모든 것이 드러나는 낮 시간을 피하고 최대한 시각적 정보가 유보되는 밤을 이용해 가변적이고 비가시적인 도심의 단면을 드로잉으로 그려냈다.

<달 드로잉>(2013)은 서울에 뜬 보름달을 좇아 비디오로 기록한 뒤 종이와 먹지에 겹쳐 그린 드로잉이다. 이 시리즈의 대표작 <324초의 달>(2013)에서 작가는 영상 속 달이 등장하는 횟수, 시간 그리고 크기를 수학적 수치로 환산해 지름 106cm의 대형 달로 번안해 그렸다.

최근 작 <땅바닥 드로잉>(2015)과 <빛 드로잉>(2015)에서는 자신의 집에서 출발해 정해진 도착지 없이 총 3번의 다른 이동 경로로 이동하고 다시 집으로 돌아갈 때까지의 여정을 보여준다. 작가는 이동경로에서 100번째 걸음마다 한 번씩 멈춰, 땅바닥에 종이와 먹지를 겹쳐 눌러 표면의 질감을 담아 <땅바닥 드로잉>으로 그려내고 멈춰선 순간의 이미지를 한 장의종이에 먹지를 바꿔가며 그려 <빛 드로잉>을 완성했다. 이러한 과정을 통해 작가는 시공간의 변화를 제한적이고 분석적인 방법으로 보여주고자 하였다.

1980년대에 태어나 '포스트-미디엄' 이후 시대를 살고 있는 한국의 젊은 작가들은 뉴 미디어 테크놀로지를 활용하는 작업이나 사회의 현실에 대한 비평적인 작업을 통하여 그들만의 담론을 만들어나가는 특징이 있다. 이와는 달리 강동주는 '그리기'라는 전통적인 작업 스타일로 주목을 받고 있는데 이 전시를 통하여 한국 현대미술에 있어서의 드로잉의 현 위치와 앞으로의 발전가능성에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. ● 강동주(b. 1988)는 서울과학기술대학교 조형예술학과를 졸업하고, 동대학원 조형예술학과를 수료하였다. 두산갤러리 서울(2015, 서울, 한국), OCI 미술관(2013, 서울, 한국), 누하동 256(2012, 서울, 한국)에서 개인전을 개최했고, 시청각(2015, 서울, 한국), 일민미술관(2015, 서울, 한국), OCI 미술관(2015, 서울, 한국), 커먼센터(2014, 서울, 한국), 일현 미술관(2013, 양양, 한국), 고암 이응노 생가 기념관(2012, 홍성, 한국), gallery plant(2011, 서울, 한국) 등의 그룹전에 참여하였다. ■ 두산갤러리 뉴욕

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to present the solo exhibition of Dongju Kang, the recipient of the 5th annual DOOSAN Artist Award. As her New York debut, this exhibition features a selection from her works such as The Moon Drawing (2013), Light Drawing (2015), and Ground Drawing (2015). ● Dongju Kang's practice has consisted of observing every corner of Seoul and recording the subtle changes in the city based on the different times. The artist has avoided daytime where the light brings many things into view and has rather opted to make drawings during the nighttime when much visual information becomes hidden and more variable and non-visible elements are revealed. ● The Moon Drawing (2013) is the result of the artist following the moon from the Seoul night sky, recording it on video, then drawing it on paper and carbon paper overlapped together. The magnum opus of this series entitled The Moon of 324 Seconds (2013) takes the frequency, time, and scale of the moon as seen in the recording, then converts them into numerical values, then draws the moon adapted as one with a diameter of 42 inches. ● Kang's recent pieces Ground Drawing (2015) and Light Drawing (2015) depicts the artist's movement from her home towards an undecided destination, each time moving in three different routes then returning back to her home. During this course, the artist would take hundred steps, pause, then on paper overlapped with carbon paper on the ground, record the texture of the surface, creating Ground Drawing. Then, using one piece of paper but changing over several carbon papers, created Light Drawing, attempting to capture the moment where she was still. Through this type of process, the artist shows the changes within space and time in a limited but analytical way. ● Korean artists born after the 1980s living through the "post-medium" era are characterized by employing new media technology or making socio-political commentary in their work. However, Dongju Kang differentiates herself from this group by working in a somewhat traditional method of drawing. This exhibition will provide a good opportunity to observe the current status and position of drawing within Korean contemporary art and its various potentialities. ● Dongju Kang (b. 1988) received her B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Seoul National University of Science and Technology. She has had numerous solo exhibitions at DOOSAN Gallery Seoul (2015, Seoul, Korea), OCI Museum of Art (2013, Seoul, Korea), and Nuha-dong 256 (2012, Seoul, Korea).
