"감독이자 관찰자이자 미숙련 노동자의 공장 일기" 외국인 노동자들이 커피를 마시며 휴식을 취하는 공장 내 비밀스런 공간 '휴게실', 그들이 먹고 자고 하루 일과를 정리하는 '기숙사 방 안'까지 『공장일기』는 그들의 삶에 더 가까워지고 싶어 하는 어느 관찰자의 호기심이 투영된 한 편의 관찰일기다. 여기서 관찰자는 『공장일기』의 감독이자, 일기를 쓴 주체이며, 이제 막 공장 일을 시작한 미숙련된 노동자이기도 하다. 영상의 초반부는 감시카메라의 시선으로 공장을 훑으며 차가운 느낌을 주는데, 그래서 일까? 초반부만 보았을 때는 흔히 상상할 수 있는 "외국인 노동자의 삶"을 그려낼 것이라 짐작해버릴 수 있지만, 관찰자는 엉뚱하게도 우리가 상상했던 고된 공장일이 아닌 웃음 넘치는 화목함으로 분위기를 전환시킨다.

"『공장일기』는 '친구' 그리고 '관계맺기'에 대한 이야기" 『공장일기』는 표면적으로 어느 공장에서 일하는 외국인 노동자들의 하루 일과를 짧은 영상과 사진으로 엮은 것에 불과한 듯 보이지만, 그 안에는 그들과 "친구"가 되고 싶고, 또 그렇게 되어가는 관찰자의 모습이 투영돼 있다. 관찰자는 단 한 번도 영상에서 등장하지 않지만, 끊임없이 자신의 목소리를 드러내며 그들의 이름을 부른다. "무디뜨!", "뚜뚜!" 이처럼 『공장일기』는 무디뜨, 뚜뚜 그리고 그와 함께 일하는 "친구들"의 모습(소리, 글, 표정)을 영상에 담아냄으로써, 그들과 친구가 되어 가는 관찰자 자신의 모습을 보여주고 있다.

"당신의 이름은 무엇입니까?" 우리는 『공장일기』의 관찰자처럼, 그들과 친구가 될 수 있을까? 친구는 어떻게 되는 것일까? 관계의 시작은 무엇일까? 이제 『공장일기』는 '공장'을 벗어나, 전시장이라는 새로운 환경에 놓일 것이다. 한 번도 무디뜨와 뚜띠를 본 적 없는 낯선 사람들이 낯선 공간에서 그들을 영상으로 마주하게 될 것이다. 『공장일기』가 그랬듯이 우리도 서로의 이름을 부르며 시작해 보는 것을 어떨까. "당신의 이름은 무엇입니까?" ■ 오지민

"Factory diary of a director, an observer, and an unskilled worker" From 'staff lounge', a secret place in the factory that foreign workers take break drinking coffee, to 'dormitory room', a place they eat, sleep, and finish their daily schedule, Factory Diary is a piece of observation diary reflecting the curiosity of an observer who wants to get closer to their lives. Here the observer is the director of Factory Diary, the writer of the diary, and at the same time an unskilled worker who just started the work at the factory. In the beginning of the movie, it gives cold image with the view point of surveillance camera looking through the factory. Maybe that's why in the beginning you assume that it will describe 'the life of foreign worker' as anyone can imagine, but the observer changes the mood into joyful environment full of laughter rather than a tough factory work that you've just imagined. ● "Factory Diary is a story about friend and relationship" Factory Diary may just look superficially like a compilation of short videos and photos about the routine of the foreign workers at a factory, but inside, it reflects the figure of the observer who wants to be and becomes friends with them. Although the observer never appears in the video but his voice repeats calling the names of the workers. "Mudit!", "Tutu!" Like this, by capturing (the voice, writing, and facial expression of) Mudit, Tutu, and "his friends" working with the observer in the video, Factory Diary is showing the observer becoming friends with them. ● "What is your name?" Can we be friends with them, just like the observer in the Factory Diary? How do we make friends? What is the start of the relationship? Now the Factory Diary will be out from "the factory" and will be placed in a new environment, the exhibition hall. The strangers who have never met Mudit and Tutu will be facing them through the video in a strange place.
