김명범은 서로 다른 사물의 결합을 바탕으로 개인적인 기억과 경험을 풀어내는 작가로, 일상의 평범한 사물을 새로운 맥락에 위치시켜 그 의미를 확장하는 작업을 전개해왔다. 그가 보여주는 조각의 형태는 대체로 가볍고 일시적이며 변형 가능성을 내포하며, 풍선과 나무, 지팡이 막대사탕과 밧줄, 목발과 사슴다리의 구성처럼 이질적인 사물끼리 결합하거나 기존의 것을 다른 사물로 대체하는 방식을 취한다. 그의 조각/설치가 눈길을 끄는 이유는 다소 엉뚱한 조합처럼 보이는 사물의 구성이 다양한 공감각적 경험과 사고를 유도한다는 점에서이다. ● 전시장 한 켠에 공중에 떠 있는 붉은 풍선 나무가 보인다. 땅에서 벗어나 뿌리를 내보이는 죽은 나무는 공중에서 붉은 풍선더미와 만나 열매 가득한 생명을 품은 나무가 된다. 노년을 연상시키는 지팡이 모양 막대사탕의 유래에 의문을 품었던 작가는 뻣뻣하게 꼬여 있는 컬러풀한 막대사탕 형상이 아래로 내려와서는 하얀 밧줄로 풀려있는 조각을 제시한다. 그런가 하면 사슴의 다리는 목발과 원래 하나였던 것처럼 밀접히 결합되어 있다. 이 외에도 연필과 결합된 화살, 풍선을 품고 있는 새장의 모습과 같은 알 수 없는 이미지를 보여준다. 수수께끼와도 같은 이러한 이미지들은 보는 이로 하여금 여러 연상과 사고를 이끌어내며 때로는 강렬하고 때로는 유머러스하며 때로는 한편의 서정적인 시처럼 다가온다.

사물끼리 맺는 관계는 그의 작업을 이해하는 데 중요한 단서가 된다. 각기 다른 사물들은 하나의 오브제 안에서 색채, 크기, 재질감 등이 묘한 조화와 균형을 이루며 형태를 유지하거나 기능이 가능하도록 서로 팽팽히 결합되어 있다. 박제된 생물과 사물의 결합에서 자연물과 인공물의 경계를 무의미한 것으로 보는 작가의 관점을 엿볼 수 있으며, 무수히 많은 풍선들이 나무에 달려 있는 설치작 「Untitled」 실현 과정에서 작가의 수공을 연상해보면 결과물로서의 예술과 과정에서의 노동이 별개의 것이 아님을 알 수 있다. 작가는 이처럼 맥락과 성질이 다른 사물을 긴밀히 병치시키며 생명과 죽음, 과거와 현재, 이상과 현실과 같은 대립 항들이 삶 속에서 순환됨을 이야기한다. 그가 이야기하는 바는 우리가 살아가며 마주하게 되는 장면이기도 하다. 서로 다른 사물끼리 결합된 채 조화를 이루는 형상은 우리 각자가 남편(부인)과 아들(딸), 친구, 직업인 등 다양한 역할을 소화하며 역할갈등을 겪지만 조화와 균형을 찾아가는 우리 삶의 모습을 되돌아보게 한다. 또 하나로서 기능하지 못하는 것을 이미 알고 있는 듯 서로 팽팽히 결합되어 있는 모습은 온전치 못한 채 살아가는 우리들의 모습과 크게 다르지 않다. ● 전시 제목 『AROUND』가 의미하듯 이번 전시는 작가의 주변 관찰과 성찰에서 비롯된 지극히 사적인 이야기이지만, 사물에 담긴 작가의 이야기를 유추하다보면 그와 별개로 나의 이야기를 찾을 수 있는 흥미로운 지점이 있다. 본 전시를 통해 우리 주변에 존재하는 사물을 단지 물질로서가 아니라 심미적이고 사유적 대상으로 변환하여 우리 주변 일상을 새롭게 환기해보는 경험을 갖길 바란다. ■ 제주도립미술관

Kim, Myeongbeom expresses his personal memories and experiences by combining disparate objects together. He expands the meanings of common objects that we see in everyday life by placing them in a new and uncommon context. His sculptures are shaped by combining disparate objects or replacing an object with another object, such as, balloons and a tree, a candy cane and rope, a crutch and deer legs. The shapes are generally light and transitory, and imply a possibility of transformation. The reason why his sculptures and installation art draw attention is that a seemingly awkward and extravagant combination of objects, in fact, induces various synaesthetic experiences and thoughts. ● At one side of the exhibition hall, a red-balloon tree is displayed up in the air. A dead tree, detached from the ground and its roots are exposed in the air, turns into a life-embracing tree that fully bears fruit as it meets a stack of red balloons. The shape of a candy cane reminds one of old age. Wondering about the origin of the cane-like shape, the artist makes a sculpture in a shape of a tightly twisted colorful candy cane, but the shape changes as it goes down to the lower part into a shape that looks like a loosely untwisted white rope. Meanwhile, the deer leg is closely combined with a crutch, as if they were one originally. He also shows some incomprehensible images like an arrow combined with a pencil or a birdcage on the balloons like a hen sitting on her eggs. Such puzzling images inspire viewers with various associations and thoughts. The images approach the viewers, intensively or sometimes humorously, and like a piece of lyrical poetry, at other times. ● The relationships between and among objects become an important clue to understand Kim's art pieces. He puts different objects together as one artistic object (objet d'art) with a delicate harmony and balance of their colors, sizes, and texture. They are tensely combined in order to form and maintain a certain shape or function in a certain way. In the piece that combines stuffed animals and lifeless objects together, we can peep into the artist's viewpoint that the boundary between natural and artificial objects is meaningless. In the installation piece, "Untitled," the artist displays a countless number of balloons hanging on a tree. It must have been laborious and tedious to put them together into a piece of artwork. Evidently, we can see that art, as an outcome, and the labor that was put in through the process to realize art, are not separated from each other. By closely juxtaposing objects with different contexts and characteristics, the artist speaks out that the conflicting phenomena, such as, life and death, past and present, and ideal and reality, in fact, circulate in life. ● What he presents in his art is also the scenes that we all have to face sometime in our life. The harmonized shapes created by combining different things, reflect on our own life. We all have different roles to play, as a husband or wife, son or daughter or as a career man or woman. Conflicts arise as we play our roles. But we move on and eventually find harmony and balance in our life. In the shape where different objects are tensely connected, it is as if the objects know that they cannot function as one. It is not so much different from the way we live that people cannot be whole alone. ● As it is indicated in the exhibition title, "Around," the artist presents very personal stories in this exhibition. They originate from self-examination and observations of things and happenings that take place in his daily life. As we try to associate his art with his personal stories, we may find interesting points on which our own stories are reflected. The exhibition may become an opportunity for us to see things that exist around us, as not just a physical object, but also an aesthetic and inspiring object for thoughts. We may also find a moment that can refresh our daily life in the surroundings. ■ JEJU MUSEUM OF ART
