타인의 얼굴

타인의 얼굴은 말로 설명할 수 없는 묘한 세계 같다. 사람의 얼굴을 오래 바라보는 일은 나의 오랜 습관이다. 전체적인 윤곽과 곡선, 세월이 만지고 간 주름이나 세세한 모공 같은 겉모습뿐만 아니라 그 사람만이 풍기는 고유의 표정, 분위기와 심리적인 형상을 들여다보는 것. 이것은 외딴섬과 같은 삶에서 타인을 통해 스스로를 확인해 보고자 하는 행동일수도 있고, 대상의 본질을 찾아내고자 하는 작가본연의 직업의식일수도 있을 것이다. 언제나 마주하지만 언제나 의문투성인 사람들의 모습을 고민하는 나의 태도는 자연스럽게 흥미로운 관심사가 되었고, 작업의 주제로 확장되기에 이르렀다.

사람들을 지속적으로 관찰해보면서 서로 다른 느낌들을 분류하고 구별하다보면 한 가지 접점이 보인다. 익숙한 이야기지만, 사람들은 누구나 밖으로 표출되지 못한 하나의 큰 웅덩이 같은 것들이 내면에 웅숭그리고 있다는 것이다. 그 고유한 표정들은 공동체 사회에서 드러낼 수 없는 각자의 표정이나 감정 혹은 말할 수 없는 비밀일 것이다. 하지만 이러한 내면은 외로움이나 공허함, 자기 폐쇄와 같은 형태로 타인에게 보여지거나 현대인의 사회적 병리현상이라는 이름으로 규정지어질 뿐이다. 프레임 밖의 사정은 누구도 궁금해하지 않듯이. ● 타인의 얼굴에는 어떤 풍경이 깃들어 있다. 단순히 머릿속에서 생각하고 순간적인 기억으로 지나치기에는 너무 많은 것들이 고여 있다는 것을 나는 매번 느낀다. 얼굴과 표정이라는우물 속에 담긴 풍경, 그 알 수 없는 웅덩이의 모습을 나만의 방식을 통해 지속적으로 기록하고 수집하려는 이유는 이 지점에 있다. 말로 설명할 수 없다는 것은 어쩌면 우리가 삶을 계속 살아가고 있는 이유인지도 모르므로. ■ 서완호

The face of others seems to be a mysterious world that cannot be explained in words. Staring the face of a human is my old habit. Seeing the appearance including overall outline and curves, wrinkles made in time, and detailed pores as well as unique facial expression, aura, and psychological aspects might be of a behavior to confirm myself through others in an isolated island or of work ethic as an artist to find the essence of objects. My attitude of specifically considering people that are always seen but still remain unanswered has become an interesting concern that ended up expanding the theme of my work. ● When continuously observing people and classifying and distinguishing different types of feeling makes it feasible to see one convergence. Even though it sounds familiar, people have a type of gigantic figure that has not been revealed inside out in their internal world. These unique facial expressions might be a secret that cannot be talked about or emotion or facial expressions of individuals that cannot be revealed to community. However, such an inner world is either specified in the name of social pathological phenomena of modern people or is shown to others in the form of self-confinement, loneliness, or emptiness. Outside world of the frame is not of a concern of anyone. ● Certain landscapes are represented in the facial expression of a certain person. I feel how there are too many things to regard it as an instantaneous memory and delineate in my head all the times. Landscape contained in a figure named face and facial expression and the image of an unknown figure are the reason why I insist to collect them on my own way. How they are not explainable in words might be the reason why we all live our lives. ■ SEOWANHO
