A Paradigm Shift

Back to the beginning ● 대학에서 회화를 전공했지만 입체작업에 대한 열망이 나의 몸속에서 항상 꿈틀거리고 있었던 것 같다. 6년 전부터 시작한 입체작업은 「신인류의 초상」이라는 큰 제목 아래 「플라잉맨 시리즈」, 「드라곤플라이」, 「숨쉬는 자동차」 등의 키네틱 작품을 발표해 왔다. 워낙 기계를 좋아했기 때문에 작품에 기계적인 요소를 빼 놓을 수는 없었다. 때문에 6년간의 작업은 정교하면서도 규칙적이고 구체적인 형상이 보이는, 한마디로 직선(直線)을 위주로 한 육면체 작업이었다. 그러나 이번 작품은 불규칙적이고 형이상학적인 자유로운 곡선(曲線) 위주의 곡면작업으로 표현이 되었다. 어떻게 보면 내안에는 직선과 곡선이 공존을 하는데 지금까지는 직선에서 흥미를 찾았다면, 앞으로의 작업은 곡선에서 찾거나 직선과 곡선을 적절하게 혼용해서 사용할 것 같다. 예술가는 자기가 하고 싶은 이야기를 자기식대로 표현을 하는 사람이다. 물론 사회적 문제, 정치적 이슈를 다루더라도 작가의 눈과 가슴으로 재해석해서 탄생을 시킨다.

나에게 있어서 드로잉작업은 인간과 자연 그리고 기계 같은 사물을 내속으로 끌어오는 가장 훌륭한 방법이라고 생각을 한다. 서로의 관계를 눈으로 볼 수는 없지만, 그들은 서로 선(線)이나 실 같은 관계로 얽혀 있다는 생각이 든다. 그리고 중첩된 선(線)을 관찰해 보면, 선(線)끼리 서로 연결되고 그 사이의 공간에서 묘한 매력을 찾을 수가 있었다. 그리고 이런 관계를 자연과학적이고 철학적인 상상으로 풀어가는 것이 아주 흥미롭고 즐겁다. 예를 들면 혈관이나 섬유조직 그리고 기계속의 전선과 위성에서 보는 도로 같은 것들이다. 혹은 사람들의 인연이라고 말 할 수도 있을 것이다. ● 이번 작업은 서로간의 관계에 의해서 얽혀진 것들에 대한 유기적인 형태를 관찰하면서 얻어진 상상력에 의해서 만들어졌다는 생각이 든다. 이렇게 나의 패러다임의 변화는 오랫동안 습관처럼 반복된 드로잉작업에서 시작이 되었고 변화 하는 것 같다. 기계와 인간, 동물과 식물 등 자연과학적 카테고리를 드로잉의 선(線)에 비유를 하면서 찾아가는 재미도 있지만, 선(線)과 선(線) 사이의 공간을 보는 것도 재미있을 것 같다.

먼 미래에는 인간과 동, 식물 등 생물도 기계를 구성하는 금속, 엔진, 모터 등의 무생물과 유전자를 소통하며 얽혀 진화해 나갈 수도 있지 않을까? 라는 상상을 해본다. 생물과 무생물의 경계를 허물고 서로 유전자를 나누며, 아주 복잡 미묘한 관계를 형성 할 것이라 생각한다. 이러한 유기적 관계는 시간, 장소, 바람, 속도, 방향, 공간, 물 등의 환경적인 변화에 따라서 예상치 못한 모습으로 무한하게 진화가 거듭 될 것이다. 이러한 관계를 시각적으로 표현 하자면 풀어 헝클어진 실타래나 종이위의 낙서처럼 불규칙적인 복잡한 선(線)의 뭉치처럼 보여 질 것이다. 바람에 휘날리는 실타래 같은 움직임을 진회색의 흑연 같은 철(鐵)의 질감을 이용해서 표현을 했다. Back to the beginning ● I think I have always felt a strong, innate attraction to sculpture, even though I majored in painting in college. Six years ago, I began creating kinetic sculptures, including the Flying Mans eries, Dragonfly, and Breathing Car, under the broad the me Portrait of New Human Beings. Reflecting my fondness for machines, all of these works incorporated mechanical elements. For six years, I produced intricate, structured and discernibly concrete forms composed mainly of straight lines, essentially different variations on the hexahedron structure. In my latest project, I have turned to curves—irregular, metaphysical and unhindered in their movement. In a sense, my own mind is a landscape of both lines and curves; absorbed thus far in the former, I hope to now begin exploring the latter, or employing an appropriate blend of the two. Artists are people who tell the stories that matter to them, in the mode or method of their choosing. Whether a social problem or a political issue, the eyes and heart of the artist provide the lens through which the story is interpreted and brought to life. ● I've found that drawing is the best way I know to bring things closer to me—people, nature, machines and other objects. While the relationships between and among these things might not be visible, they are connected nonetheless, like lines in a drawing, or entangled yarn. In observing how various lines overlap, we can discover their points of intersection and also appreciate the curious beauty of what lies in the spaces between them, even imagining the natural scientific or philosophical implications of what we see. We might be looking at blood vessels and fibrous tissues, or electrical wiring inside a machine, or satellite images of roads; we might very well be looking at the connections that bring people together. ● The inspiration for this project came from my observations of the organic way in which people and their lives become intertwined in relationships and the possibilities I imagined might spring from that. For me, this process, which began with long, habitual hours of drawing, has been a major paradigm shift. ● It can be fascinating to compare the realms of machines, humans, animals, plants, and the natural sciences to the lines of a drawing, but we can also find much of interest in the spaces between lines. Maybe someday, in the distant future, the genes of animals, humans, and plants will interact with the genes of metals, engines, motors and other inanimate components of machines, becoming interwoven and evolving together. If the boundary that separates living things from the non-living can be removed, and genetic information shared, our relationships will become even more complex. This kind of organic relationship will only continue to evolve, over and over again, in accordance with the changing environment, including the passage of time, changes of place, wind, speed, direction, space, and water. We might visualize this web of interconnection as a tangled skein of yarn, or scribbles on a page—irregular and convoluted. Using the dark graphite-like texture and material of steel, I have expressed this possibility as a tangle of yarn, blowing in the wind. (Aug 2015) ■ KIMJINWOO
