여백은 나의 마음이 노닐다 가는 장場이며, 나의 모든 것을 표현할 수 있게 한다. 정갈하게 마감되어 있는 화판에 장지를 붙이고, 명반과 아교를 물에 녹이는 과정에서부터 시작되는 작업의 여정旅程은 제사장이 제祭를 준비하는 마음처럼 정성을 다하게 된다. 이러한 과정은 반복적인 행위로 인하여 유희遊戱와 무념 상태에 이르게 한다. 무수히 많은 선 긋기는 신체적 고통과 사뭇 지루함을 동반하기도 하지만, 나의 의도를 표현하고자 하는데 중요한 요소와 에너지원原이자, 소리 없는 기도와 같은 염원이다. 나의 마음에 집중하여 작업 해 가는 시간을 보내다 보면 어릴 적 우리 가족들의 생일을 맞이하는 이른 새벽에 어머니께서 정성을 다하여 기도하시던 모습이 새삼스럽게 생각난다. 방 윗목에 생일상을 정성스레 차려 놓으시고 자식 잘 되게 해 달라고 염원하며 혼신의 힘을 다하여 빌던 모습이였다. 요즘 부쩍 어릴 적 어머니의 정성을 다하여 기도하시던 모습이 잦게 생각나는 것은 아마도 나 자신 또한 작업하고 있는 내내 엄마의 모정母情처럼 작업에 대한 생각으로 몰입되어서 일 것이다. 어머니들이 가족들의 건강과 앞날이 무사無事하길 염원念願하며 온 정성을 다하여 가정을 이끌어 가는 기원의 의미들은 선사시대의 흔적인 동굴 벽화에서도 볼 수 있다. 선사시대 원시인들은 동굴 벽에 동물의 형상을 새기는 행위를 통하여 사냥하러 나간 사람들의 안녕安寧을 기원祈願하는 주술적인 의미를 담아내며 빌고 또 빌었다.

나의 작품 소재는 모란꽃과 금전수이며, 재료는 장지와 분채 그리고 금분, 은분 등을 주로 활용하였다. 화중지왕花中之王이라 일컫는 모란꽃과 금전수 money tree는 인간의 영원한 염원인 부귀영화富貴榮華를 상징한다. 모란牡丹peony이 갖는 상징성을 ' 그림으로 보는 세계문화상징 사전(진쿠퍼 지음, 이윤기 옮김)' 의 내용을 서술하여 보면 다음과 같다. 중국에서 모란은 빛, 영광, 사랑, 행운, 부富, 봄, 청춘, 행복을 상징한다. 일본에서는 결혼, 풍요, 영광, 부, 양기를 나타낸다. 아마도 위와 같은 모란의 공통된 상징성은 우리나라에서도 여러 문화적 자료 등을 통하여 공통적인 면을 찾아 낼 수 있다. 신라 진평왕 시기에 중국 당 태종이 자주색, 붉은 색, 흰색의 세 가지 색깔로 그린 모란꽃 그림과 씨앗 세 되를 보내왔다는 말이 있다. 진평왕은 덕만 공주(선덕여왕)를 불러 모란꽃그림을 보여 주었다고 한다. 나비가 없는 이 그림을 본 덕만 공주는 향기가 없을 거라 했단다. 과연 모란꽃은 향기가 없을까? 사실 흐드러지게 피어 있는 모란꽃 옆을 지나다 보면 은은한 향기가 우러난다.

모란꽃은 태평성대를 기원하는 의미를 담고 있으며, 불화와 민화 등을 살펴보면 모란꽃의 풍성한 자태가 단순화한 이미지로 표현되어있는 예들을 볼 수 있다. 이는 모란꽃의 상징성을 통한 부귀영화를 꿈꾸는, 절절한 마음의 염원을 담아내고자 함을 알 수 있게 한다. 나는 모란꽃이 갖는 상징성과 같은 맥락으로 금전운과 행운이 들어온다고 하는 금전수money tree의 이미지를 단순화 하였다. 아교에 금분을 개어 조밀稠密한 느낌으로 공간을 표현하였다. 또한 선명한 색채와 평면적이고 장식적인 느낌의 반복적인 선 긋기 행위는 소리 없는 기도처럼 정성을 다하게 한다. 금전수는 개업開業하는 집이나 ' 부자 되세요' 라는 의미로 한해가 시작되는 시점時點에 마음의 염원을 담아 선물로 주는 예들을 볼 수 있다. 나는 이런 관점에서 금전수의 이미지를 차용하여 그리게 되었다. 금전수 잎사귀의 형상을 살펴보면 동전모양을 하고 있는데 ' 흔들면 돈이 떨어진다고 하는' 전설적인 의미가 내포되어 있다고 한다. 옛날이나 지금 현대인들은 여러 가지 양상과 방법으로 각자의 관점에서 행복하고자 꿈을 꾸며 살아간다. 이렇듯 동식물에 은유적인 상징성을 부여하고 삶을 살아가는 보편적인 사람들은 부귀와 영화로움을 절실하게 염원念願하며, 추구하고자 함은 원초적 본능이라 생각한다. 본 전시를 통하여 작품을 바라보는 관점에 따라 다양한 비평이 쏟아지리라 예상 해본다. 이 또한 나에게는 매우 중요한 에너지원原이 되는 소통疏通의 장場이 될 것이다. Margin is a space in which I can stroll ,and it enables me to express all of mine. After pasted paper on the board, the course of painting is begun through the process of melting glue in the water. I devote myself to all this course as if a priest respectfully performs rituals. This course leads to playfulness and freedom from all ideas and thoughts after being repeated many times. To draw lines beyond number is accompanied by bodily pain and something tiresome, though, it is a sort of wish like a silent prayer as well as an energy source of important elements that make me express of my intention. Sometimes a memory about my mother came to my mind when I concentrated my energies on painting. My mother used to pray in early mornings wholeheartedly in my childhood. Especially celebrating birthdays of family members, she prepared for the breakfast on the table carefully and then prayed for her children' s happiness and well-fare at the table with all her heart. I recall that praying figure of my mother' s frequently whenever I engage in painting because my artworks may be like the children of my mother We are also able to find out not only mothers' wishes of their family' s well-being and happiness but running households well on some wall paintings on the caves of the traces of the prehistoric age. The primitive in that age used to carve out the figures of animals as a shamanic ceremony, praying for hunters' safety. ● Subjects of my paintings are money trees and a peony blossom and I usually use sliding screen paper ,color powders, gold powder and silver powder as materials. The peony blossom called a queen of the flowers and money trees stand for the human being' s wealth and prosperity. We can find out the symbolism of Peony in " Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Traditional Symbols" by Jean Cooper symbolism of Peony. The peony symbolizes light, honor, love, luck, wealth, spring, youth, and happiness in China and marriage, richness, honor, wealth, and vitality in Japan. We also realize that the symbolisms for peony in Korea are not so different from those of China and Japan through various cultural materials and data. A story have been told like the following since King Jinpyoung of Silla era. Emperor Taizong of the Chinese Tang Dynasty had sent the peony painted in three colors, purple, red and white, and three does of seed. King Jinpyoung had let her daughter, Princess Dukman(the Queen Sunduk) watch this painting. She instantly had realized that this flower had had no scent because of no butterfly in that painting. Is it really true? It' s not true. There is faint smell of peony when passed it. ● This flower stands for a reign of peace and simplifying images of abundant peony are shown on some Buddist' s paintings and folk paintings. These images allow us to realize that the peony symbolizes our earnest desire of dreaming wealth and prosperity. I also try to simplify the image of money tree that means good and monetary fortune like peony. To describe this image as rich and delicate, I used mixed glue and gold powders. I am inspired to be engage in painting due to Vivid colors and drawing lines repeatedly with two-dimensional and ornamental impression. Money trees are one of the most popular gifts for opening ceremonies of restaurants and for new year' s day. I adapted these image from money trees and has painted them on my canvas. From the coin shaped leaves of the trees , a story has handed down like this. If you shake these trees, you can get some money together " Man lives on the vision of the happy future from his or her own point of view, achieving that in many ways all the time. It may be a primitive instinct for all the people to give a metaphorical symbolism to animals and plants and to wish wealth and prosperity earnestly. I expect a lot of comments on my paintings during this exhibition. Those are sure to be as critical energy sources through this communication channel as well. (Jun, 2015) ■ LEEKYUNGRYE
