검고, 붉은 집 Black, Red House

김동기의 작업 소재는 대도시에서 우후죽순처럼 건축되어지는 규격화된 집 풍경이다. 세월과 사연이 담긴 오랜 삶터가 사라진 자리에, 이제는 사각형의 획일화 된 집들이 지붕만 두른 채, 도시로 몰려든 고단한 사람들의 잠을 재우는 삶터가 되고 있다. 또한 한 뼘의 땅도 버려두기 아까운 도시인들은 비좁은 골목만 남기고 벽돌을 쌓아올리기 바쁘다. 하지만 김동기는 켜켜이 포개져 증식하는 벽돌집들을 결코 건조한 무기질이 아닌, 생명을 품는 산처럼, 숲처럼 느낀다. 급하게 지어져 견고하지 못한 집들이지만 자연의 일부처럼 여겨지는 것은 바로 그 속에서 생명을 살리는 삶의 온기가 뿜어져 나오기 때문이다. ■ 황유정

Kim Dong-gi takes the motif of his work from standardized houses mushrooming in a metropolitan area. In a place where the old homes loaded with stories are disappearing, these standardized houses have been inhabited by those living a tough life. Urbanites are always busy laying new bricks, leaving only a narrow alley intact. To the artist however, the brick houses proliferating in layers are organic like mountains and forests with life. The houses are not solid as they were built rapidly but can be considered part of nature exuding the warmth of life because they exude the warmth of life. ■ HWANGYUJEONG
