말이 없는 사람

두산갤러리 뉴욕은 2015년 7월 2일부터 8월 27일까지 양정욱의 개인전 『말이 없는 사람』을 개최한다. 양정욱은 자신이 살아가면서 만나는 사람들의 이야기와 그 속에 드러나는 보편적인 인간의 정서를 다루는 작업을 한다. ● 전시 제목 『말이 없는 사람』은 아버지, 동료, 이웃, 등 반복적인 삶 속에서 등장하는 작가 자신과 주변의 일상적이고 소박한 "우리"의 모습을 담고 있다. 각 작품은 문장 형식의 제목과 더불어 작가가 마주하는 일상에서 얻은 메세지를 담담하게 풀어내는 단편적 글이 동반된다.

이번 전시의 대표작인 「언제나 피곤은 꿈과 함께」(2013)는 모두가 잠들어 있는 늦은 새벽까지 눈을 뜨고 있어야 하는 경비원의 모습에 착안하여 만들어진 작품이다. ● 끈으로 엮어 만들어진 거대한 원형 나무 구조물은 장착된 모터로 인해 일정하고 반복적인 운동을 수행하며 소리를 내고 거대한 그림자를 만든다. 이러한 구조물과 그 가운데 놓여진 하나의 전구는 유리창이 있는 경비실의 모습을 형상화하며 고난과 희망이라는 감정을 상징적으로 보여준다.

「우리들의 주말을 거북이만 모른다」(2014)에서 사용된 빛을 요소로 한 움직임과 그에 반응하는 소리들의 반복은 이야기 전달에 유리한 효과로 작용한다. 감정이나 이야기를 공감각적으로 전달하기 위한 수단으로 비가시적인 내러티브가 생산하는 문학적인 에너지와 가시적인 운동성이 일으키는 속도, 방향, 반응 등 새로운 액션의 언어와의 보완 관계에 집중한다. ● 양정욱의 작업은 획일화된 현대 사회 시스템에서 살아가는 평범한 인물들의 삶 속에서 빈 곳을 찾아 휴머니티를 부여하고 삶의 원리나 유희를 이끌어 냄으로써 정적이고 서정적인 일상의 내용과 키네틱 아트라는 역동적이고 유기적인 매체와의 새로운 관계성을 제시한다. ■ 두산갤러리 뉴욕

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce Jung Uk Yang's solo exhibition A Man Without Words from July 2nd through August 27th, 2015. ● Jung Uk Yang's work deals with narratives of people that he encounters in life, and the universal human sentiments that are revealed through those stories. ● The exhibition title A Man Without Words encompasses the reflections of everyday, simple things that would occur in the life of the artist as well as our neighbors, colleagues, fathers, etc, who lead monotonous, repetitive lives. Each piece is given a title that is structured as a phrase or a sentence and accompanied by a short text. ● The magnum opus of this exhibition, A Fatigue Always Comes with a Dream (2013), was conceived based on the lives of apartment security guards in South Korea, who must stay awake until dawn while most people are asleep. A large wooden structure put together with thread is set to motion through an internal monitor, in a timely and repetitive manner, while making sounds and casting a large shadow. In the center of this large structure is one light bulb, which evokes the interior of the security guard's glass booth, symbolizing both struggle and hope. ● In Only the Turtle Does Not Know about Our Weekends (2014) light is used as an element in its movement, which causes a reaction of repetitive sounds. This becomes an effective storytelling device. As a multi-sensory method to communicate emotion and narrative, the artist focuses on a new language of action and its relationship to their supplements, such as the literary components produced by non-visual narrative, and speed, direction, reaction that are created by visible motion. ● Yang's work draws out the void within ordinary people who are living within the standardization of contemporary society and imbues it with humanity. He draws out life's principles as well as play, using a medium such as kinetic art that is both dynamic and systematic to tell stories that are both silent and lyrical. ■ DOOSAN Gallery New York
