Zero Gravity

갤러리 기체가 합정동에서 연남동으로 이전해 갖는 전시는 김아름 작가의 『Zero Gravity』전이다. 작가는 드로잉, 회화, 애니메이션, 공간설치 등 여러 매체적 접근을 시도하면서 자신이 경험한 이미지에 대한 주관적 상상을 재현한다. 개인적 기억과 감정을 기록하고 풀어내는 일차적 수단이라는 점에서 드로잉은 그의 작품 전반에 걸친 핵심적 매체다. 그리고 이렇게 모아진 드로잉들은 회화, 애니메이션, 공간설치 등 각각의 매체적 특성 안에서 확장된다. 여기서 눈 여겨 볼 것은 그의 이런 접근이 단지 자기 표현의 단계에 그치지 않고, 매체를 유연하게 넘나들면서 드로잉들을 나열하고, 중첩시키고, 움직임을 부여해 새로운 상상의 공간을 꾀한다는 점이다.

이번 전시에서 작가는 드로잉, 회화 작업들과 애니메이션 「Zero Gravity」, 「달」, 「시계 두 개」, 「Area D」 등을 선보인다. 「Zero Gravity」는 건축가라면 매우 현실적인 그림을 그리는 것이 당연할 것이라는 선입견을 깨는 리온 크라이어(Leon Krier)의 중력을 무시한 비현실적 드로잉을 접하면서 시작된 작업이다. 작업 안에서 구조물이나 건축물들은 생성되고 소멸되는 순환을 거치며 점차 무중력의 상태로 전개된다. 「달」은 작가가 천문대에서 보았던 달의 강렬한 이미지에서 착안된 작업이다. 작가의 달에 대한 고정관념을 깨트리는 이미지들을 온라인에서 다시 찾다가, 고대인들이 그린 달의 드로잉들이 자신이 본 실제 달의 이미지와 오히려 유사한 것을 발견하게 된다. 그렇게 찾은 드로잉들을 가장 밑바닥에 위치시키고, 그 위에 작가가 달과 연관해 떠올린 인물들이나 풍경에 관한 드로잉들을 중첩시켜 달의 형상을 변주한다. 「시계 두 개」는 어린 아이가 그린 시계에 관한 드로잉을 바탕으로 하고 있으며, 공간 내의 시간적 질서를 흩트린다.

작가는 일련의 애니메이션들을 공간에 하나의 파노라마처럼 풀어놓는다. 작품들은 각각 독립적이면서도 따로 있지 않고 모여 완결된 하나의 공간으로 제시된다. 이처럼 작가는 마치 하나의 사건 혹은 장면을 위해 각각의 역할로 무대에 선 배우들처럼 배치해 이른바 '무중력'의 무대 혹은 공간을 구현하고자 한다. 아마도 작가가 설정하고 있는 '무중력'이란 곧 자유로운 상상의 공간이다. 그런 점에서 거기에는 중력으로 대변되는 실제적 세계의 견고함을 자신만의 방식으로 넘어서고자 하는 강한 의지가 담겨 있다고 할 수 있다. ■ 갤러리 기체

Gallery Kiche is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Areum Kim, on view at Yeonnam-dong. The artist subjectively recreates images from her experiences and memories into a wide range of artistic mediums, including drawings, paintings, installations and animations. Drawing is her most salient and effective means of revealing her personal emotions into artwork. She does this not only as a means of self-expression, but to chronicle her experiences and imaginations, much like a personal diary of drawings. This inspires the ‘coming together’ and ‘dynamism’ of her artistic imaginations - some that are variations or extensions of same themes, others that are overlapping and shifting from one theme to another. This ‘coming together’ and ‘dynamism’ can be observed in Areum Kim’s recent animations, "Zero Gravity", "Moon", "Two Clocks" and "Area D" ● "Zero Gravity", her most recent work, is conceptualized around extracting gravity from drawings of a postmodern architect Leon Krier, by breaking away and freeing herself from any stereotypes. Areum Kim reproduces and creates objects and structures that seemingly enters into a state of zero gravity. Her new series of animations is a combination of the artist’s drawings as well as drawings by a child (Two Clocks) and ancient people (Moon). These animations are aligned and exhibited on a panoramic scale, like the maestro in theatre who positions the actors on a stage in their respective roles for a play. For the artist, "Zero Gravity" has no bounds for imagination. It is a stage or space where representations and stereotypes of the real world are lost and dissolved, and where imagination becomes infinite. ■ GALLERY KICHE
