Cases of Finding a Whale in a Mountain

두산갤러리 뉴욕은 2015년 5월 21일 부터 6월 25일까지 레지던시 입주작가인 정지현의 개인전『Cases of Finding a Whale in Mountain』을 개최한다. ● 정지현은 일상에서 조우하는 설명하기 힘든 사건이나 특수한 상황에 처한 개인의 심리와 행위에 집중하는 것으로 작업을 시작한다. 이를 기반으로 자신과 연관된 다른 이야기를 연상하고 주변에서 발견되는 물건들을 수집, 조합, 기록하는 고유의 방식에 다양한 매체를 적용해 왔다. 이번 전시에서 작가는 국내 다수의 그룹전에서 선보였던 작품을 해체하고 재조합한 오브제들과 레지던시 기간 동안 수집한 것으로 만든 새로운 조각과 드로잉 시리즈를 선보인다. ● 출처가 모호한 물건의 파편들은 집합, 해체, 조립 등 작가의 손을 통해 새로운 역할과 움직임을 부여받으며, 작가가 적극적으로 사용하는 전기 신호에 의해 간헐적으로 움직이는 오브제들은 작가가 지정하는 장면과 긴밀하지만 비정형적인 관계를 이룬다. ● 관객은 전시 공간 안에서 일정한 시간을 보내야만 작가가 만들어낸 물질간의 리듬과 내러티브를 인지할 수 있다. 이는 배우가 등장하지 않는 지극히 물리적인 시나리오가 짧은 시간으로 압축되어 이루어진 연극처럼 보이기도 한다. ●「Background Drawing」은 자신과 관련 없는 낯선 사회를 작가의 개별적 환경으로 삼기 위해 어떤 방식을 정해 시간을 보낸 결과물이다. 작가가 지난 1월부터 작업하게 된 뉴욕 스튜디오의 창밖 풍경은 매우 가까이 붙은 건너편의 건물, 남의 집 창이었다. 낮에는 그들의 공간이 적나라하게 보이고 밤이 되면 다시 그 창이 작가의 작업실을 비추는 것을 바라보는 것이 작가의 새로운 환경이었다. ● 작가가 매일 규칙적으로 그려나간 54장의 드로잉으로 이루어진 스튜디오 창밖의 풍경은 대형 화면으로 전시장 안에 들어와 관객에게 하나의 배경으로 공유된다. 그 앞으로는 창문 틀, 방진막, 울타리, 금속으로 이루어진 차단막들이 구획을 만들고 테이블 위에 놓인 수많은 오브제들은 각자의 모양과 빛, 소리, 움직임을 가지고 서로 엮이듯 놓이게 된다. ● 전시장에 설치한 핸드메이드 창문에 상영되는 고요한 바다 영상은 바다를 감시하는 CCTV로서, 인터넷에서 관광을 목적으로 사용되고 있는 것인데 작가는 이를 전시장에 하나의 풍경으로 가져왔다. 그 앞에 놓인 포그머신이 때때로 만들어내는 연기기둥은 오히려 손에 잡힐 듯한 현실적인 사건으로 그 풍경과 겹친다. 창문 뒤에 놓여 반쯤 가려진 검은 오브제「Night Walker」는 천천히 움직이며 밤하늘에 글씨를 쓰는 기계장치이다. 12개의 탐조등이 켜지고 꺼지며 공중에 문장을 쓰고, 장노출된 카메라의 눈으로만 그 문장을 확인할 수 있다. ■ 두산갤러리 뉴욕

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce an exhibition of Jihyun Jung, Cases of Finding a Whale in a Mountain, from May 21st to June 25th, 2015. ● Jihyun Jung pays special attention to an individual's psychological state and immediate reaction to unfathomable events and unique situations that unexpectedly happen in the daily life. Based on this observation, he associates to his own experiences being situated in similar events, which then lead to collecting, combining, and recording found objects around him. In this exhibition, Jihyun Jung presents new sculptures and drawings that are created by deconstructing his previous works that were showcased in a number of group exhibitions in Korea and reassembling them with found objects he gathered during his residency in New York. ● Through the sequence of being assembled, dismantled, and constructed by the artist's hands, the fragments of objects from unknown origin are given new meaning and vitality. Electric signals given by the artist sporadically allow these found objects to move in a certain direction, creating intimate but irregular relationships between them. To comprehend the rhythm and the narrative of the relationship between objects, a viewer need to spend a sufficient amount of time in the exhibition space. ● Background Drawing is an outcome of his attempt to create an individual environment from unfamiliar society unrelated to the artist by spending time in certain ways. ● Through the windows of his studio in New York, he could see through the window of somebody else he did not know, yet so close. In his new environment, he could see through everything in the day, but he would see those windows reflecting his studio at night. The view from his studio where he created 54 drawings every night is projected to the exhibition space as a backdrop. At the front is a quarantined area created by window frames, dust layer, fence, and metal. Found objects on the table interconnect with each other through their individual shape, light, sound, and movement. ● The video projection on handmade window is a CCTV surveilling an ocean which its original purpose is for tourists to view the area but is brought into the exhibition space. The smoke created from the fog machine in front of this video projection makes it even more illusionary. Behind the window is a half-covered black object called Night Walker. It is a device that moves slowly to write in the night sky. Twelve searchlights are turned on and off to write a sentence in the air, which is only visible through long exposure photography. ■ DOOSAN Gallery New York
