Flat Masses

서울은 600년 이상 조선과 한국의 수도로서 오래된 역사를 가지고 있지만, 지금은 빠른 서구화로 인해 그 정체성을 잃어가고 있는 도시이기도 하다. 60여 년 전만해도 서울에는 초가집과 기와집이 즐비했지만, 지금은 그 흔적을 거의 찾아보기 힘들다. 현재의 서울은 전통 가옥 대신에 유리로 외벽이 마감된 높은 현대식 고층건물이 그 자리에 대신 들어서 있기 때문이다. 서울에서 유년시절을 보낸 나는 이러한 서울의 변화를 관찰하며 자라났는데, 높은 고층 건물들은 주로 회색이거나 제한적인 색을 가졌으며 무겁게 가라앉아 대지를 짓누르고 있는 것처럼 보였기에 왜 건물들은 다양한 색을 가질 수 없는가에 대해서 항상 의문을 가졌다. 나는 도시 공간이 더 다양한 색과 아름다운 공간으로 거듭날 필요가 있으며, 만약에 건물들이 다양한 색을 가질 수 있다면 도시와 우리 생활은 더 가볍고 유쾌해질 것이라고 생각해 왔다.

2005년부터 시작된 건축에 대한 본격적인 관심으로, 나의 작업은 건축과 미술이 뒤엉킨 이미지로 나타나기 시작했다. 「The Color Structure Series」로 탄생하게 된 내 첫 번째 작업은 우리 주변에 산재해 있는 건물의 장면에 관심을 기울이고 발견하며 그것을 그림으로 표현하였다. 건물의 세부를 관찰하고 사진으로 담아낸 후 조형언어로 새롭게 해석해 내는 과정을 통해 이 작업이 완성되었다. 이러한 과정에서 3차원 예술의 형태인 건축은 사진 매체를 통해 2차원으로 기록되는데, 기록된 사진을 재해석하며 건축물은 선과 색으로 표현되었다.

「Flat Masses」는 2012년부터 시작되었는데 이 작업에서 나는 건물들이 본래의 육중함을 그대로 드러내지 않고 가볍고 경쾌해지기를 원했다. 건물을 가볍게 만들기 위해 나는 건축에서 다루고 있는 공간을 분석하고, 공간을 구성하는 매스들을 분리하기 시작했다. 후에 건물을 잘라내어 매스로 만들어내고, 각각의 잘려진 매스들을 비틀고 뒤집어서 개별적인 오브제로 만들어냈다. 이 오브제들은 얇은 종이조각처럼 보이기도 하고 두툼한 매스처럼 보이기도 하며 하나하나가 개별성을 가지지만 한편으로는 전체적인 유동성을 가지게 된다. 잘려진 매스는 여러 개가 모여 하나의 군집을 이루는데 그것들은 더 이상 무거운 건물의 형태를 띄고 있지 않으며, 새로운 건축의 형태로 재탄생 되었다. *이번 전시의 주택 시리즈는 건축가 이기옥의 건축 작업에서 영감을 받아 제작되었다. Seoul is more than 600 years old and has a long history as the capital of the Joseon Dynasty and South Korea, but it's now losing its identity because of the rapid westernization of the city. About 60 years ago, Seoul was covered with thatched cottages and Giwajip in rows, which are Korean traditional houses, but now it's almost hard to find any traces. Traditional houses in Seoul have now been replaced by glass curtain walls in modern high-rise buildings. My childhood in Seoul was spent growing up watching these changes in Seoul, high-rise buildings were mainly colored gray or limited colors creating a heavily settled down look that was pressing down on the ground. These things always make me wonder why the buildings could not be made in a variety of colors. I think this city needs a variety of colors to make beautiful urban spaces, because variety of colors in the buildings would make the city and our lives lighter and more pleasant. ● In 2005, out of pure interest, I began working on intricate and tangled up images using architecture and art. 'The Color Structure Series' is my first work that I focused on and found out a scene of buildings scattered around the city and created them as paintings. These paintings were completed through a process of giving a new interpretation, in which building details are observed through the photo and interpreted using visual language. In this process, three-dimensional buildings of art are recorded into photos, which are two-dimensional visuals. These buildings are expressed by lines and colors after the photos are re-interpreted. ● 'Flat Masses' is a work that began in 2012, in 'Flat Masses' I didn't want to depict the original building as massive as it was, but wanted to create something lighter. To make the building seem lighter, I analyzed spatial areas in architecture and started to separate the masses which composed areas of space. Afterwards, I cut the building into masses, and twisted and turned upside down to make each individual object. These objects look like thin pieces of paper or dense pieces of mass, each of the pieces has individuality, but as a whole there is fluidity. When the cut masses gather together and form one community and no longer are just a heavy building, a new architectural structure has been created. *The paintings of house series in this exhibition are inspired by architect Ki-Ok Lee's works.
