주로 인물화를 그리는 작가로서 내가 바라보는 대상은 마치 한 권의 오래된 지도책과 같다. 사람의 얼굴, 바람 부는 사막처럼 탄탄한, 혹은 비 오는 어느 밀림처럼 주름진 피부와 몸의 구석구석은 그 사람의 역사가 되고 서사가 되고 또한 내면까지 표출해 주는 스크린이 되는 것이다. 결국 인물의 껍질로서의 외관은 어떠한 여지가 생겨서 내용이 있는 여정을 만날 때 적절하게 그려지게 된다. 여지란 즉, 앞서 말한 책이나 혹은 집처럼 그 안으로 들어갈 수 있을 때 비로써 그 사람의 오래된 기억과 추억을 만날 수 있을 것이고, 더듬어 가다보면 숨었던 다른 무언가를 찾을 여지를 말하는 것이다. 어떤 사람을 만나서 이야기를 나누다 보면- 상대의 의견과는 상관없이 나는 이미 그 사람이 흥미롭고 그 사람을 스케치할 준비가 되어 있는 상태에서- 신기하게도 본인조차 모르고 있는 다른 얼굴을 가진 이가 다반사였고 기대치 않게 생각보다 다양하고 은밀하여 마치 오랫동안 잊고 있었던 장롱 속 낡은 연애편지와 같기도 했다. 굳이 서랍 아래 깔린 숨겨진 얼굴을 찾고자 애쓰지 않아도, 모든 얼굴에는 길이 닦여져 있고 그 곳을 따라 가다보면 그 사람의 과거와 기억도 나지 않는 전생까지 들먹이고 싶어지기 때문이다.

그러다보면 나는 나의 상상력이 혹시 그 위대한 힘을 발휘하여 내가 또 다른 지형을 만들고 있는 것은 아닌지 우려가 되기도 한다. 하지만 생각만은 적절하게 -언제나 모델과의 소통이 필요하고 공부가 필요하다고- 유지하고 있다. 그렇기 때문에 누군가가 살았던 과거와 현재를 듣고 보는, 누군가의 역사가 짓든 물건을 만지는 것조차 나에겐 하나의 여행과도 같다. 나는 한국과 미국, 또한 그 두 나라 안에서도 이곳저곳을 옮겨 다니면서 살고 있다. 어느 날은 예상치 못했던 우연한 조우를 한다든지, 어느 날은 갑자기 정들었던 곳을 떠나야 한다든지 했었다. 어쩌면 남에게는 쉽지 않을 '이동(혹은 긴 여행)'이 나에겐 일상이 되었다.

그 결과로 나는 항상 이방인이다. 그러므로 사물을 바라보는 나의 시선은 한 지역에 오래 거주하면서 생기는 사회적 관념과 문화적 습성에 갇혀있는 사람들과는 다르다고 생각한지 오래되었다. 이방인이지만 그렇기 때문에 모든 것을 받아들이는 것에 넉넉하고 곤란하지 않다. 그럼에도 불구하고 세상에 이방인 이였던 나의 정체성이 흔들리는 일이 있었다. 2014년, 한국에서는 사고로 많은 사람들의 슬픔이 바다를 넘쳐흐르게 했고, 나도 유독 한 시절 현실에 대해 감정을 추스르는데 적지 않은 시간을 보내야 했다. 그러한 감정들을 표현한 내면의 풍경화는- 천사어(Angel fish)로- 의인화 하여 표현되었고, 개인이 가지고 있는 과거에 대한 추억과 이미지들을 얼굴이라는 것에 '지형화mapping' 시켰다. 이는 마치 우리가 지도를 가지고 익숙지 않은 길을 찾아가듯, 얼굴 안에서 하나의 장소, 즉 정원과 같은 특정한 곳을 설정하여 그린 것이다. 어린 시절 좋아했던 만화나 인형의 캐릭터에 대한 추억을 가지고 있는 지나간 것들을 재생(rebirth) 시키며 개인에게 또 하나의 시간의 겹을 만들 수 있다고 생각했다.

그림을 그리는 일은 옷을 벗어내는 일처럼 나에게 얼마만큼 솔직할 수 있는가에 대한 전제가 필요하다는 생각을 다시 해보았다. 붓으로 그려내는 시간보다 머릿속에서 그려내는 시간들이 길어서 힘든 시간들이였다. 이제야 조금씩 선명하게 책들이 읽히기 시작한다. (2015.2) ■ 이선진

my life closely resembles the theme of "journey" featured in my most recent exhibition 'The Journey of Joseon Period's Art'. Traveling not only introduces one to a new, foreign environment but also to the people who reside in it. The vast variety of people coexisting in this world essentially indicates the inevitable presence of profoundly different beliefs and values. The human characteristic that I am most interested in is the dualistic view of human nature. I believe that people in modern society are forced in some ways to disguise their true identity, put up a "staged" life and embody multiple personas. My hope is that they will one day forgo this tendency and expose their unadulterated selves. ● As an artist who usually draws caricatures, I picture a person in terms of an old book. That is, all these aspects of an individual, including face, skin, and even one's spirit, can be interpreted and described as his or her "history." In fact, since one's outward appearance functions as a window, or an external barrier to one's internal character and hidden motives, communication and thorough comprehension of these subject matters are critical for artists. I personally consider studying one's past and present as the equivalent of traveling. Along with this mental traveling, I have constantly experienced physical traveling where I had to leave what I considered home and move to a foreign city or even country. ● I have come to realize that although over-identifying as an outsider may be risky, I figured that it would always remain that way and I could make that part of my narrative. I have come to fully experience the deluge of different viewpoints and often conflicting ideas, across borders, and even within myself. My works reflect my opinion that things can be appreciated for the very fact that they are different, and not prematurely dismissed for lack of apparent luster or nonconformity to norms. ● Often times, painting is compared to the act of stripping and revealing. During this process, the author invites the viewers to the space of art pictured through a voyeuristic perspective. I wish my endeavors and the images conjured up will help viewers better understand the creations made through the clash of cultures. (Feb.2015) ■ LEESUNJIN
