선과 밤의 지점(The Spot of Line and Night)

눈을 감으면 더 많은 것이 보인다. 보이지 않는 것을 보려 하고, 잡을 수 없는 것을 잡으려는, 자신이 꿈꿔온 '것'에 대해 작가 양희아는 이야기를 나눈다. 밤은 그래서 더 많은 것을 느끼고 반응하며, 상상의 나래를 펼치는 또 다른 세상이다. 어둠은 무엇이든 이야기 속 주인공이 될 수 있으며, 시공간을 넘나드는 초월적 대상이 되어 에피소드를 들려준다. 남과 다른 시선은 단순한 사물이 캔버스에 그림이 되는 지점을 보여주기도 하고, 글이 그림을 상상해 내고, 드로잉이 의미의 관계를 새롭게 생성하며, 평범하고 익숙하게 우리를 규정짓는 것들의 존재를 일깨운다. ● 양희아의 열려 있는 생각과 섬세한 감수성은 무엇이든, 어떻게든, 여유롭게 담아낼 수 있는 태도로 이어진다. 일상의 느낌이 자연스럽게 작업으로 흘러들어 가는 과정은 장소, 시간, 매체의 제약을 벗어나, 편하고 쉬운 형상(形象)과 심상(心象)이 서로 조우하는 순간이다. 집에서, 길에서, 자연에서 지나치거나 소멸할 수 있는 미물을 발견하고 생명과 아름다움의 가치를 부여하며, 또 다른 세계를 상상하고, 세상 만물과 같이 숨 쉬며 삶의 새로운 의미와 영역을 만들어 나간다. 이렇게 타인의 시선으로부터 가장 자유로운 방식으로 예술작업을 하고 있는 그의 이야기는 그래서 독백에 가깝고, 내적인 울림으로 다가온다. ● 눈을 감고 느낀 '것'을 내가 본 '것'으로 형상화하는 작업은 내 안의 살아 숨 쉬는 열정과 감각을 일깨우는 노력이며, 활짝 열린 세계를 갈구하는 끝없는 자유로움의 날갯짓이다. 삶의 시간을 늦춰, 다른 가치를 발견하고 담아내는 작가의 예술향에는 따스한 온기가 품어내는 사람 냄새가 스며 있다. 작가 양희아가 바라본 세상은, 소소하게 접근하지만 큰 차이를 만드는 생각의 출발점이 바로 삶에 내재해 있는 진실에 다가가는 길임을 이야기하고 있다. ■ 황신원

선과 밤의 지점 ● 이번 전시는 선과 밤의 지점이라는 주제로 삶의 형식에서 '안 보이 것'과 '못 보는 것'의 경계에 있는 가치들에 관한 이야기이다. ● 낮에서 밤으로 바뀔 때 혹은 밤에서 아침으로 바뀔 때 사이, 누에고치를 뚫고 나비가 되는 사이, 새싹이 나뭇가지에서 나오는 사이들에는 작동하지 않는 많은 이야기가 있다. 각자의 삶에 중요한 전환점이 될 수도 있을 그 시간들은 예전과는 달라진 가치나 사물들의 변화들이 처음에는 낯설지만 곧 익숙해지는 때도 있을 것이다. 하지만 사회 안에서 자세히 살피지 못하고 휩쓸려 묻혀 버리곤 한다. ● 선과 밤의 지점에서의 밤은 이러한 어떤 일들이 형성되기 이전의 차원과 상황, 언어로 인식하기 이전의 감각적 측면, 정황들, 바다에 부유하는 빙하 중에서 바다 위에 모이는 빙하의 일부의 모습을 포함한 보이지 않는 바다 깊숙이에 커다란 빙하 전체를 보려 함이다. 기록에서 삭제되거나 인식하지 못한 누락된 지층, 역사에서 중요한 진실이라 믿었던 부분에 이면, 알려지지 않은 문명 같은 것이다. ● 이번 전시는 현대 사회에서 벌어지는 사건이나 기존 사물들을 다양한 시각과 감각으로 유머러스한 틈을 제시하여 보는 이들로 하여금 각자의 누락된 사이 공간이자 상상의 공간으로 가는 다른 차원으로의 여행을 제안해 보려고 한다.

밤 속에 밤 ● 모든 에너지의 축척되는 시간인 밤은 언제나 너그럽다. 모든 사람들과 자연들에게 공평하게 대해 준다. 밤에게 질문을 하면 항상 친절한 태도로 답해주고, 위로 받고 싶을 때는 언제나 포근하게 위로해 준다. 마치 봄날 너무나 힘들게 새싹이 돋아나려고 애쓸 때 마지막 힘을 내게 해주는 따뜻한 봄볕과도 같다. 낮에는 해결할 수 없었던 숙제들에 대해서도 관대하다. 많은 아이디어를 생성할 수 있는 힘을 주고, 내일이라는 희망을 주기도 한다. 틀에 박힌 삶에서도 밤을 통해, 불규칙적 휴식을 취하기도 하고, 낮에는 결코 이루어질 수 없는 일들이 폭포수처럼 쏟아져 내리기도 한다. 밤이라는 폭포수.. 밤은 높은 곳에서 낮은 곳으로 향한다. 밤의 꼭대기에서는 또 다른 밤이 있다. 그곳은 밤의 절정으로 가는 길 중 절정에 다다르기 직전의 밤의 모습을 지니고 있다. 밤이라는 산속에서 밤을 만끽하기 위해 몇몇의 사람들은 아주 간단한 복장을 하고, 가능한 한 심각해지지 않고, 편안한 마음으로 밤을 기다린다. 그들은 가벼운 배낭을 메고, 서로가 서로에게 힘이 되어, 밤이라는 산을 오른다. 그리고 이들은 밤을 느끼기 위해 자신이 가지고 있던 재산의 일부를 쓰기도 했다. 밤이라는 본질을 체험할 수 있다면, 그 정도의 물질적, 시간적 투자는 아깝지 않은 듯싶었다. 그러나 밤이라는 절정으로 가는 통로는 생각보다 쉽지 않았다. 서로가 서로를 의지하다가 어떤 경로에서는 혼자서만 통과하게 되어 있었다. 그 누구의 도움을 받을 수 없는 상황이 언제까지 지속되는지 아무도 알지 못했다. 이러다 영원히 혼자 헤매며 죽어갈 지도 모른다는 공포를 느끼기도 했다. 다시 발길을 돌려 처음의 자리로 돌아갈 수도 없었다. 자포자기 하는 심정으로 계속 걷는다. 다시 초심으로 돌아가서 밤을 만끽하기 위해 그 길을 견뎌내기로 한다. 지루하기 그지없는 밤의 통로는 천릿길, 만리길 같았다. 도착점이 없는 밤의 미로 같았다. 그 끝나지 않을 것 같던 밤의 미로 속에서 밤을 기다리던 사람들은 길고 긴 과정을 통과했다. 신발은 다 닳아 구멍 난 사람도 있었고, 배낭을 잃어버린 사람도 있었다. 그러나 도착한 사람들은 모두 한 마음이었다. 같은 곳을 바라보고, 같은 길은 걷고 있었다는 것, 서로가 서로에게 의지가 되었고, 힘들었지만 한명도 포기하지 않았다는 점이 신기하게 느껴지기도 했다. 서로가 서로를 위로하며, 하나가 되어갈 무렵, 밤의 꼭대기에서는 갑자기 유성별처럼 밤이 쏟아졌다. 따뜻하고 평온한 밤이, 밤의 미로와도 같던 힘든 길의 과정을 눈 녹듯이 녹이고, 밤의 선상을 아름답고 신비롭게 비춰주고 있었다. ● 남에게 피해를 주는 일을 해 본 적이 없던 순박한 노인이 깨끗한 마음으로 삶의 끝을 맞이하게 되는 순간처럼 그렇게 편안한 밤이, 밤을 기다린 사람들을 포근하게 감싸 안고 있었다. 밤의 온기, 너그러움, 어루만짐으로 밤을 기다린 사람들, 밤의 힘든 통로를 통과하게 된 사람들은 자신의 슬픈 과거와 상처마저도 치유되고, 정화됨을 느꼈다. 마음 속 고요함을 느끼고 위로가 되었다. 다시 새로운 사람으로 거듭나는 것을 느꼈다. ■ 양희아

If one closes their eyes, they can see more things. Artist Heeah Yang conveys narratives on what she has dreamed of. She tries to see the invisible and catch the uncatchable. Night is thus another world where she feels and reacts to more things and unfurls her imagination. Night, whatever it is like, can be a protagonist of her narratives, conveying episodes as objects transcending space-time. Yang displays a place where simple things become a picture on the canvas, conjuring up pictures through text. Her drawing awakens beings defining us, newly shaping the relation of meanings. ● Yang's open thought and sensitive sensibility are bound up with her ability to capture anything leisurely in any manner. She demonstrates the moment of an encounter of comfortable, easy-to-grasp shapes with mental images in a process through which her everyday emotion is naturally integrated into her work, breaking away from the restrictions of place, time, and medium. She discovers insignificant things at home, on the street, and in nature and gives life and beauty to them. She brings new meaning to life and occupies her own territory, conjuring up another world and breathing with all things in the world. As she engages in her artistic work in a way free from others' perspectives, her narratives approximate monologues, leaving an inner resonance. ● Yang makes efforts to awaken her verse and her inner world through work giving form to what she felt and experienced with her eyes closed. This endeavor is like the fluttering of wings in infinite freedom, craving for a wide open world. She discovers and encapsulates another value in her art by delaying the time of life. We can sense a warm humanity seeping into her world. The artist seems to approach the truth of life through trifling ideas that make a significant difference. ■ Hwang Shin-won

The Spot of Line and Night ● This exhibition with the theme The Spot of Line and Night addresses values on the border between "what is invisible" and "what cannot be seen". ● There are lots of stories not working when day changes into night; night changes into the morning; a cocoon becomes a butterfly; and a sprout shoots up from a tree stem. Through the times that could be a turning point for each life, we may feel changed values and initially unfamiliar things can soon become familiar. However, we could not look over such change closely in society. Such change is swept up and buried in everyday life. ● Night in The Spot of Line and Night stands for a dimension and situation before work is achieved and sensuous aspects and circumstances before they are recognized in language. It is like the visible and invisible parts of an iceberg floating in the sea. It is also like the layer not documented or perceived; the hidden side of what we believe to be an important truth in history or unknown civilization. ● This exhibition is designed to propose a journey to another dimension, in-between space of imagination, by presenting a hilarious interstice; seeing events and things in contemporary society from diverse perspectives, and with various senses.

Night within night ● Night – when all energy is stored – is always generous. Night treats all people and nature fairly. When one asks the night a question, it always answers kindly. When one feels he needs comfort, the night always warmly consoles him. Night is like a warm sunlight that heartens a tree when it struggles to shoot sprouts on a spring day. The night is also generous even if one cannot solve assignments during the daytime. It gives power to generate lots of ideas and hope for tomorrow. After daily routines, one takes a rest at night. Affairs that never occur in the daytime are poured down like a waterfall. The waterfall of night ---- Night flows from higher points to lowers ones. There is another night on top of the night. That looks like the night right before reaching its peak. A few persons wait for night with peace of mind, not to be serious, in a bid to fully enjoy the night in the mountain of night. They ascend the mountain, dressed lightly, heartening one another. ● They use their wealth to feel the night. They seem to consider such investment of material and time to experience the true nature of night worthy. However, it is not easy to reach the height of night beyond all expectations. While relying on one another, one alone has to pass down some path. Nobody knows how long the situation in which they cannot receive any help continues. They feel terrified they may die while wandering for good. They cannot return to their initial places. They keep walking in desperation. They return to their initial determination and decide to endure the path to fully enjoy the night. The path of night is extremely tedious and looks like a maze of night with no arrival point. Those waiting for the night pass a long process in the maze of night that seems to have no end. ● Some have worn their shoes into having holes and others lose their backpacks. However, those that arrive have one mind. It is amazing that they look in the same direction, walk on the same path, rely on one another, and nobody gives up proceeding toward their destination despite hardship. About that time, when they give solace to one another and become one, the night pours down like meteors. A warm, peaceful night dissolves a process of taking a tough path like a maze, beautifully and mysteriously shining on the world. ● The comfortable night embraces those waiting for night just as a naïve aged man, who has never caused any harm to others, greets the end of his life with an innocent mind. Those waiting for the night with warmth, generosity and caress and those passing the hard path of night feel the sadness of their past and even their wounds are healed. They feel quietude and solace, feeling they are reborn into new persons. ■ YANGHEEAH
