우리가 흔히 알고 있는 프랑스어 바캉스(Vacance)는 라틴어 바카티오(Vacatio)를 어원으로 하고 있다. "텅 비우다"라는 그 뜻처럼, 프랑스인들은 여행을 통해 마음을 비우고, 다시 또 새로움으로 그 공간을 채운다. 허승은 작가의 두 번째 개인전인 '모호한 경계의 풍경'은 그녀가 여행을 통해 얻었던 감정에 초점을 맞추었다. ● 그녀의 첫 번째 개인전 'Wandering'이 작가 개인의 강박, 역할과 책임, 자신을 옭아매고 있는 사고활동으로부터 벗어나려는 노력의 산물이었다면, 이번 작품들은 희망을 내포하고 있다. 덧붙여 작품 속 자연은 보이는 그대로의 '풍경'이라기 보다는, 그녀가 느낀 감정의 상징적 원소에 가깝다. 어쩌면 모호함과 몽환적인 분위기는 그녀만의 상징적 비유로써의 언어일지도 모른다. ● 허승은 작가는 삶의 열망 한줄기를 잡기 위해 히말라야로 떠났다. 즉, 비우기 위해 떠난 여행을 통해 새로운 감정들을 담아왔다. 산인 듯 파도인 듯, 구름인 듯 물안개인 듯 모호한 자연적 소재들을 현실과 몽환의 경계로 옮겨 놓았다. 이는 자신의 감정을 구체적인 형태가 아닌, 그 반대로 변환될 수 있음을 보여준 것이다. ● 작품을 감상하는 다양한 방법론과 미학적 이론은 존재한다. 하지만 논리로 이어지는 변증법적 해석능력을 잠시 내려놓고, 본 전시를 감상한다면 각자의 '바카티오(Vacatio)'를 경험할 수 있을 것이다. ■ JUNBO

우리는 어떠한 마음으로 오늘날을 살고 있는가? 바쁘다는 이유로 소중한 그 무엇인가를 놓치고 사는 건 아닌지. 본 전시를 통해 각자의 바쁜 삶을 돌아보고, 보다 밀도 높은 삶의 의미를 마주 할 수 있는 시간이 되길 바란다. ● 이번 전시에서는 일상을 벗어나 얻게 되는 심상의 변화를 "여행"이라는 키워드로 녹여보려 하였다. 시간이 지나 흐릿해진 여행지의 흔적과 풍경을, 기억 너머의 공간에서 재해석해보고자 한다. ● 나에게 여행이란 새로운 환경을 통해 만나는 자유의 출구이자 삶의 원동력이다. 지난 봄. 신이 허락해야 닿을 수 있다는 미지의 그곳 히말라야로 떠났다. 광대한 자연을 마주한다는 것은 고행길의 연속이었지만 어느새 구름 위를 걷고 있다는 걸 느꼈을 때는 그동안의 고통과 힘듬이 잊혀질 정도로 눈부신 장관이었다. ● 히말라야 여행에서 파생된 새롭고 다양한 감정들은 내면의 잠재의식으로부터 표출되는 색감과 형태로 표현되어진다. 그렇게 기억을 더듬어 떠올려 본 여행지의 풍경은 꿈인 듯 현실인 듯 또 다른 낯선 풍경을 자아낸다. ● 일상에 지쳐 잠시 마음의 여유와 휴식을 찾고 싶을 때 한번쯤 특별했던 추억을 떠올려본다면 소박한 여유지만 의미 있는 시간이란 생각을 해본다. ■ 허승은

The French word "Vacance" that we are familiar with comes from the Latin word "Vacatio." As the word signifies "to empty out," the French empty out their minds through traveling and fill in the space with new again. Seung Eun Her's second solo exhibition 『The Landscape of Ambiguous Borders』 focuses on the emotions she felt during her trip. ● While her first solo show 『Wandering』 was a fruit of her efforts on trying to escape from her own thoughts or things that suffocate herself such as constraints, roles and responsibilities and so on, the works this time imply hope. Moreover, the nature depicted in her work is not the nature we usually think of. Rather, it is a symbolic element of the emotions she experienced. Perhaps, the ambiguity and the dreamy atmosphere might be her own languages of symbolic metaphors. ● Seung Eun Her had left to Himalaya to grasp a ray of aspiration toward her life. She brought new emotions from the trip that she took in order to empty out herself. She transferred natural subject matters such as a mountain that might look like a wave or cloud or wet fog depending on who sees it into a border of reality and fantasy. That is, she indicates that her emotions can be converted into abstract imageries rather than specific figurative forms. ● There are various methodologies and aesthetic theories to see her work. However, if the viewers appreciate this show by looking at it without their dialectical interpretations, they will be able to experience their own "Vacatio." ■ JUNBO

What mind do we have to live today? Are we missing something precious because we are so busy? My hope is that this show will encourage you to reflect on your busy life and think about the deeper meanings of life. ● The keyword of this exhibition is "traveling"—which causes a shift in our mindset as we step outside our daily routine. My aim is to reinterpret the traces and landscapes of the blurred memories of traveling places by observing them from a space beyond the memory. ● For me, traveling is an exit into freedom; something that enables me to meet a new environment and gain a new motivation in life. Last year, I went to the Himalayas—a mysterious place that can only be reached when God allows. I went to the Himalayas feeling fed up, perhaps hoping to grasp a ray of aspiration for life. Confronting the vast nature of the mountains brought me to a continuing road of penance, but just when I sensed that I was walking on the clouds, I saw a breathtaking view, which erased all the pain and suffering I had gone through during the trip. ● The various new emotions I experienced during my trip to the Himalayas have been transformed into colors and forms that express my subconscious. The travel landscapes that I found by searching my memories have become, through my work, a strange landscape that is dreamy yet real. I think when we often grow tired of our lives and want to take a rest. In these moments, we can recall special memories we and have meaning in our lives. ■ Seung Eun Her
