화성 Mark on Hwaseong

"'Exploration of Hwaseong'은 경기도 화성 지역을 탐구하고 기록 또는 기념화하는 작업이다. 나는 실제 경기도 화성시에 살았던 경험과 화성「Hwaseong, 華城」과 화성「Mars, 火星」의 동음이의어로부터 이 작업을 착안했다. 작업의 진행은 현재 NASA에서 우주의 화성을 탐사하는 방법을 일부 차용하거나 비슷하게 흉내 내어 기록한다." ● 위 글은 대학교 1학년부터 4년 이상을 이어온 작업에 대한 노트이다. 이미 예전에 마무리를 짓고 다음 단계로 넘어갔어야 했는데 이곳 저곳에서 수상의 영예를 입으며 지속적으로 주목을 받게 되어 아직까지 작업을 이어가고 있다. 그런 지난 4년간의 시간은 나의 작가적 성장 시기였다. 'Exploration of Hwaseong'의 작업들에는 하나의 동기 또는 설정 안에 서로 다른 개념들이 난무한다. 초기의 작업들은 경기도 화성과 우주의 화성 사이의 시각적 유희의 한계를 넘어서지 못했다. 한마디로 아이디어 놀이에 지나지 않았다. 그것은 이목을 끌기에 충분했을지 모르지만 정작 내가 흥미를 갖는 지역에 대한 이야기는 뒷전을 차지할 수 밖에 없었다. 이번에 선보이는 작업은 'Exploration of Hwaseong'의 마지막 시리즈이다. 화성을 탐사하는 나와 개발현장의 모습을 '생방송'이라는 형식으로 적나라하게 보여준다. 단순한 시각적 유희를 넘어서는 거대 도시개발에 대한 노골적인 고발이라고 할 수도 있지만 사실 이것은 마치 천일야화처럼 지난 시간 내가 개발현장을 잠입하여 고군분투하며 벌어졌던 수많은 사건과 사고에 대한 기억이며, 공간 또는 지역을 바라보는 나의 태도에 대한 이야기이다. ■ 윤병주

"'Exploration of Hwaseong' is a series of work to explore, record or commemorate a region called Hwaseong in Gyeonggi-do. The idea of this work is derived from the homonym of Hwaseong; one is the name of the city Hwaseong in Gyeonggi-do where I actually used to live and the other is Mars. Both names are pronounced the same as Hwaseong in Korean. To produce my work, I borrowed or mimicked some part of the research methods to explore the Mars from NASA." ● The above is an artist statement of my work 'Exploration of Hwaseong' which I have been working on more than 4 years since my first year in university. I was supposed to complete this series and move on. However, somehow and thankfully, my works have been still receiving attention which encouraged me to continue working on this concept. ● The past 4 years was a period for my artistic growth. There were many different concepts under one theme or motive of 'Exploration of Hwaseong'. In the earlier stage, my work was no more than visual amusement about Hwaseong in Gyeonggi-do and Hwaseong(Mars) in the space. It was just a play of concept. Maybe it was enough to attract interest but the story about the city that I wanted to bring up was now left behind. ● The works shown in this exhibit are the last stage of the series which takes a close look at the development sites in Hwasweong and me exploring the city through a way of a live broadcast. It could be seen as an in depth report about indiscriminate development but in fact, it is a record of own memories like the Arabian Nights and all the mischief I needed to partake to realize this project in telling my story and take on this special region. ■ YOONBYOUNGJOO
