숨어있다 Hiding

작가는 줄곧 넓고 빈 캔버스에 바람이 부는 정원을 가꾸어 왔다. 작가는 여행을 통해 선물 같은 위로를 받고, 다시금 그 기억을 곱씹으며 화폭에 옮겨내어 보는 이들을 이상적 공간으로 안내한다. 시공간을 거슬러 지나친 수많은 풍경들을 회상하며 사유한다. 그중에서 구체적으로 이야기하자면 그곳(여행에서의 특정 장소)에서 만난 나무들을 화폭에 옮긴다. 작가는 사람들에게 쉽게 꺼내지 못하는 말들을 나무에게 털어놓고 잠시 내려놓는 방식을 통해 스스로를 치유한다. 이렇듯 기억 속에 스며든 나무들은 곧 작가 본인의 모습을 한 거울이기도 하며 벗이기도 하다. ● 자연은 위대하고 경이로우며 다채로운 모습으로 늘 우리 곁에 머문다. 깊고 고요한 밤, 울창한 숲 속의 나무들 사이에 있으면 마치 집어삼킬 것 같은 공포감을 안겨주기도 한다. 그러한 공포감은 작가에게 있어서 자극제가 되기도 하며 모티브가 된다. 그러나 작가는 주로 편안함과 위로를 주었던 나무들을 소재로 작업한다. 불편함이 전혀 존재하지 않는 편안함, 위로가 되는 아름다움이 회화가 가진 가장 본질적인 자태로 여기기 때문이다. 그녀의 작품은 마치 색종이를 조각조각 이어붙인 것처럼 다채로운 색감을 가지고 있으며 작가만의 붓 터치로 완성된 보기 편안한 추상적 풍경화라고 정의 내릴 수 있다. 작가만의 유아적인 발상과 사고, 표현과 소통 방식 등──이러한 요소들이 한상미의 정원으로 가꿔지는 가장 중요하고 핵심적인 재료이자 레시피들이라고 여겨진다. 참조「이선영-한상미/정원술과 예술」 작품에 드러난 광경들은 작가가 여기는 이상적인 산물의 공간이기도 하며 서서히 작가의 내면에 자리 잡아가고 있는 또 다른 표현 방식으로도 볼 수 있다. 기존의 작업들이 정원(공간)보다 나무(소재)가 주를 이루었다면 최근 작업들은 프레임에서 물리적인 배치 구도가 소재들을 압도하고 있다. 어쩌면 그 프레임은 작가가 속해있는 사회라는 틀을 나타내는 것 같기도 하다. 작가는 외부에서 겪은 온갖 풍파들을 깨끗하게 지우고 광활한 대자연의 공간에 다채로운 색감의 나무를 심고 가꾼다. ● 이번 전시-한상미의 여섯 번째 개인전 『숨어있다』는 작가의 기존 작업의 또 다른 연속선상이다. 여행에서 만난 나무 이미지들도 등장하지만 사뭇 생소한 아이템들이 함께 출현한다. 나무는 시대적으로 반영된 나 자신을 나타내기도 하며 내면에 숨겨왔던 것들을 솔직하고 함축적으로 담아내기도 한다. 그 안에 숨어있기도 하지만 드러나 있기도 한 이중적인 그림자는 결국 외면해왔거나 잊고 있었던 나무의 본질을 이야기하는 것이다. 혹자는 외부세상과 내면 사이의 괴리감을 감추고 있는 것 같다고도 하지만, 작가는 그들 사이의 불가분의 관계에 대하여 서서히 무덤덤해짐을 느끼고, 이야기하고 싶어진 게 아닐까 싶다. 위에서 언급한 작가만의 유아적인 사고와 발상들은 어쩌면 이번 전시에서 가장 진솔하게 선택하고자 했던 것들 즉, 작가가 말하고자 하는 본질과도 어우러져 있다. 이렇게 작가가 숨겨놓은 소재들은 기존의 재현적 묘사와 내적 표출의 포착 사이에서 공존하는 섬세한 미동이며 또 다른 탐구방식이다. 이번 전시를 통해 수많은 이야기가 담긴 나무들과 진심어린 소통이 이루어지길 바라며, 광활하고 따뜻한 한상미 만의 정원을 보며 관객들이 편안하고 설레는 바람을 마음속에 담아갔으면 한다. ■ 조현진

The artist has always tended the breezy garden on a wide, empty canvas. The artist is comforted by a journey, and she draws pictures on the canvas reminiscing about the memories. This leads the audience to ideal space. She remembers and thinks about a lot of landscapes beyond space and time. Specifically speaking, she draws the trees (that she met on her journey) on the canvas. The artist heals herself by opening her heart to the trees. The trees engraved her memory are not only the mirror that reflects herself but also her friend. ● Nature is great, amazing and colorful. It is always with us the way it is. In the deep stillness of the night, we feel fear among the trees in a thick forest. The fear is an inspiration and motive to the artist. But she mostly draws the trees that comforted her. Because she thinks comfort (without any discomfort) and beauty (that can be comforting) are the essence of the picture. Her works of art are colorful like a patchwork of colored papers and they are abstract landscape paintings with her unique brushstrokes. Her childish mentality, the way of thinking, expression method and a mode of communication are essential materials and recipes. ― from 「Art and Art of Gardening」 by Lee Seon-yeong(Art Critic) ● The landscape in her works of art is her ideal place. Also, it can be another expression method about her inner side. The artist drew mostly trees before, but in her recent paintings, the placement and composition of the frame play an important role. Maybe the frame is the framework of society where she lives. She forgets all of her hardships that she suffered in the outside world, and she plants the trees and looks after them on the wide open space of Nature. ● Her 6th private exhibition 『Hiding』 connects with her existing paintings. There are trees that she met on her journey, but new items are on her paintings. Trees represent herself, as well as they show her inner secrets openly and implicitly. Twofold shadows (hiding but exposing) represent the essence of trees that she had avoided and forgotten. Some people say that the paintings hide the gap between the outside world and her inner side. But I think she becomes accustomed to the inseparable relation and she wants to talk about that. Her childish mentality, the way of thinking are in harmony with what she wants to say. The materials (that she hides in her paintings) are on her existing presentative description and her inner expression at the same time, and they are also her exploration way. This exhibition will help audience to communicate with trees sincerely, and I want them to keep rustling breeze in mind watching the artist's wide, warm garden. ■ Hyun jin Cho
