새벽 숲에서 깨어나다. ● 새벽녘 숲은 어둠에 형체가 없어지다가도 이내 숨어있는 형체로 나타난다. 새벽이라는 시간은 만물이 잠들고 다시 살아나기 시작하는 경계의 시간이다. 김남수는 순환의 연결고리가 공존하는 새벽이야 말로 진정한 사유를 일깨워준다고 믿는다. 생성과 소멸이라는 우리의 인생사와 닮아있는 숲에서 이끌어내는 사유는 물질주의 시대를 살면서 단절된 자연과의 교감을 이끌어낸다. 이러한 재충전의 과정은 자신을 되돌아보고 우리에게 필요한 소박하면서도 진솔한 삶의 영위를 가능케 해준다. 세심하게 주의를 기울여 수묵이 만들어내는 깊고도 은은한 변화들을 바라보면 숲의 움직임이 느껴지는 듯하다. 또한 존재하는 것과 그렇지 않은 것의 관계에 대해 상대적인 것에 대한 가치를 일깨워주는 화면의 여백은 작가가 이야기하는 중용의 미에 가치를 더한다. 이처럼 숲에서의 사색은 자연과 동화되고자하는 동양적 사고의 체험을 이끌어내며 이는 정서가 위축된 현대인의 삶에 여유를 제공한다.

김남수는 자연이 보여주는 숲을 표현하는 데 있어서 수묵정신을 바탕으로 그 사물의 본질을 꿰뚫는다. 수묵은 인간과 자연 사이의 매개체로 존재하며 작가는 다채로운 먹색 그리고 질감을 통해 숲에서 느껴진 관조적 사유를 자유롭게 표현한다. 무(無)로 회귀되는 자연의 본질은 변하지 않으며, 결국 우리가 무엇을 본다고 하는 것은 실재의 형체와 의미를 주관적으로 받아들이는 것이다. 작품을 통해 마음의 눈으로 자연을 인식하고 내면의 세계와 합일하는 과정은 보는 이의 몫이다. 여기에 숲에 가득한 새벽의 기운을 수묵이 가진 간결함으로 표현한 작가의 조형미는 또 다른 감상의 즐거움이 된다. 김남수의 숲은 가히 노닐고 머무를 수 있는 곳이다. Waking up from forest in dawn ● Dawn forest, although its shape disappears in darkness, re-appears as a hidden shape. Dawn is a boundary time when all things slept and then wake up. Kim Nam Soo believes that dawn where connection ring of circulation coexists really enlightens contemplation. Contemplation coming from forest that resembles our life of birth and death draws communication with nature which is disconnected by materialism era. This re-charging process makes us look back and live simple and honest life. When we see deep and delicate changes carefully produced by ink-and-wash painting, we seem to feel movement of forest. White blank (margin) in screen which makes us realize relative values for existence and non-existence add another value to beauty of moderation which the artist talks about. Like this, contemplation in forest extracts experience of oriental contemplation, which adds leisure of life to modern people whose emotion is shrinking. ● Kim Nam Soo sees through essence of objects based on spirit of ink-and-wash painting in order to express forest shown off by nature. Ink-and-wash painting exists as a medium between human beings and nature, and the artists expresses contemplative reason freely through various colors of ink and texture. Essence of nature that it returns to an empty state is not changing and finally what we see is to receive actual shape and meaning subjectively. Recognizing nature through artworks and combining process with inner world is task of observers. The artist's beauty of sculpture here becomes another joyfulness for appreciation.
