능동포즈 LET POSE A QUESTION

모두 뛰어가는데 혼자 걸어가는 것은 쉽지 않다. 하지만 멈춰있는 것은 더욱 어렵다. 권진규 아틀리에는 그 태도를 전형적으로 보여준다. 50여 년 전 조각가 권진규에 의해 만들어진 그곳은, 소통을 위한 개방보다는 존속을 위한 보존에 무게를 실어 운영되고 있다. 동시대와 함께 달리는 것보다 가만히 그 자리에 서 있는, 안전하면서도 수월한 방법을 선택했다. 그가 떠난 비극적 순간에 그곳의 시계는 멈춰졌다. 하지만 아틀리에에 레지던시로 머물며, 그것은 잘못된 생각임을 알았다. 급변해가는 주변에서 하나의 태도를 유지하는 것 자체도 쉽지 않으며, 더 놀라운 것은 담담해 보이는 그곳이 주변의 변화에 온몸으로 흔들린다는 점이다. 다만 눈에 보이지 않는 미세한 움직임일 뿐이다.

인체드로잉은 시대와 문화권의 경계를 넘어 모든 예술 입문자들이 했을 첫 단계이다. 기억을 더듬어 보면, 첫 인체드로잉 시간에 선 몇 개만으로도 복잡 미묘한 하나의 사람이, 동작이, 상황이 만들어지는 것이 경이로웠다. 다만 나의 현대미술로 지금까지 끌고 오지 못한 것은 비맥락적 동작들과 그 포즈를 유지하며 드러나는 모델들의 고통징후들 (표정, 호흡, 흐트러짐)이 나의 개념을 위한 대상으로 대하기는 버거웠다. 지속시켜야 한다는 이유에선 어떤 포즈도 쉬운 것은 없다. 그것은 50여 년 전 권진규 아틀리에에 섰을 수많은 모델들도 같은 고통을 느꼈고, 그들의 흔들림은 단단한 조각가의 숨겨진 결과물-드로잉에서 잘 나타나 있다.

POSE의 대표적 사전 의미로는 (그림이나 사진촬영을 위해) 포즈를 취하다와 (진지한 생각을 요하는) 질문을 제기하다가 있다. 전자는 시각이미지들 창출을 위해 창작자에 의해 연출된 수동자세이나, 후자로 본다면 새로운 담론 및 위기의식 등을 주변을 일깨워 함께 이끌어 가고자 하는 능동자세가 된다. 모델의 몸을 이상적 각도로 연결시키는 목선과 쇄골, 미세근육을 보여주기 위해 들려진 발뒤꿈치, 서로 다른 방향을 향하는 미세한 손끝은 주변의 이목을 끌고자 하는 시각예술가의 의도된 장치이다. 이 포즈들에서 미적 각도만 줄인다면, 굳은 신념을 가지고 동시대를 대하는 우리의 행동과 다르지 않다. 이번 전시에서는 오역된 자신의 포즈를 제대로 알리기 위해 동시대에서 멈추는 것을 선택한 50년 전의 권진규와 본인, 그리고 이 둘과 함께 있어준 아틀리에, 시대간의 충돌을 고스란히 담고 있는 혜화문 등의 의지와 떨림으로 연장된다. ■ 윤주희

It is not easy to walk when everyone is running. It is much harder to stop though. The Kwon Jinkyu Atelier epitomizes the attitude. The atelier has been running as a place for preservation, rather than open communication since it was started fifty years ago by the sculptor, Kwon Jinkyu. It chooses the way to exist as it was, which is safe and easy, but not to run along as the world changed. Its time stopped at a moment of tragedy when Kwon Jinkyu died. Yet, while staying there, I realised that was my misunderstanding. I found that it is not easy to maintain an attitude surrounded by a rapidly changing world. What is more surprising for me is the calm space actually swung back and forth, by changes happening around it. It gives, however, only the slightest hint of movement. ● Life drawing is the first stage for every budding artist across different eras and cultures. Tracing back in my memory, I felt wonder in my first life drawing class, that a few lines can describe a person, motion and even a situation. Nonetheless, the reason I no longer do life drawing for work are signs of pain – changes of face, breath and pose - that I observed from models who had to hold awkward and lengthy poses. There are no easy poses if they have to be maintained for a long time. A lots of models who visited the Kwon Jinkyu Atelier about a half century ago must have felt the same pains, and their wobbles were captured well in the sculptor's hidden output – his drawings. ● The most common definition of the word pose is to place in a position or attitude for a picture, photograph, or the like, but when it comes with a question, the phrase means to ask a question, or more precisely, to imply the need of asking a question for consideration. The former refers to a passive action directed by someone who creates visual images; but the latter can be an active attitude to enlighten people about a new discourse or a crisis they are facing. A link of a neck line and collarbone making an ideal angle of a model's body; a lifted heel to show the small muscles of the body; and fingertips, each of which points in a different direction – these are all intended designs to attract people's attention by visual artists. If the postures' aesthetic angles are reduced, they are not very different from our attitude who live life to the full with strong faith. ● The exhibition is extended with the will and shakes of Kwon Jinkyu, who decided to stop in order to let the world know his real pose misinterpreted, me, the atelier where both – Kwon Jinkyu and me – have settled in and Hyehwamun, which keeps clashes between different eras to itself. ■ YOUNJUHEE
