TWO PASSAGES 두 개의 통로

두 개의 통로 ● 작품 감상이란 그 성질을 초월하여 하나의 여행이다. 작품을 보는 이가 경험하는 감각적인 순간에서의 동반자는 다름 아닌 작품과 함께 사유하고 체험하는 자신인 것이다. 여행이라는 하나의 통로의 궁극적인 목표가 근원으로의 향함이고 그것은 곧 자신과의 대면임을 생각할 때 작품은 여행으로 이끄는 매혹적인 초대장인 것이다. 그 봉투에는 작가마다 독특한 조형 언어가 쓰여져 있다. ● 오순미는 움직이는 일루젼과 직접 체험이라는 함축적인 순간으로서의 여행이다. 그가 형상화한 Cosmos와 Chaos로 상징되는 질서와 무질서의 동적인 이미지는 Fractal이라는 커다란 질서로 규합된다. 질서 속의 혼돈, 혼돈 속의 질서가 반영된 거울에 관람자는 이윽고 투영된 자신을 발견한다. 분열된 자신 또한 구조적이고 표상화 되었음을 인지하며 모호함에 이은 어떠한 자유를 경험한다. 파편화된 자아는 사유의 시간 속에서 하나로 결합되고 그것이 자신의 실체임을 자각한다. 그 자유는 꿈의 침잠 혹은 동양적 명상과 같은 경험이다. 시공이 일체화된 공간은 지나는 관람자에게 분석적 공간에서 어느덧 사적인 공간으로 치환된다. 관념과 거울이라는 물질이 상호 혼입 되는 과정의 체험이다. 사유하는 살아 있는 시간 속에서 서서히 세계가 드러나게 되는 것이다. 유동적이며 동시적인 분열과 창조를 총괄하는 큰 질서라는 세계의 실체 말이다. ■ 양동훈

지난 작품에서 무한 공간을 통한 실재와 허구의 사의에서 사유하는 작품을 제시 했다면 이번 작품 「봉인된 시간 (Sealed Eternity)」에서는 과거와 현재와 미래의 시간을 따라가며 내 자신의 이야기로 확장시킨다. 「봉인된 시간_과거(Sealed Eternity_Past)」에서는 태어나면서부터 현재까지의 여정을 거울 속에 새겨 길 하나하나에 기 억을 되살려 과거로의 여행을 시작한다. 그 기억은 과거에서부터 현재까지 한길에서 만난다. 길을 하나하나 되돌아 보며 오랜 시간 동안 나의 불확실했던 과거에 대한 이야기에 귀를 기울인다. 거울 속 사방으로 끝없이 펼쳐진 길들은 하나의 빛으로 다가 오며 또 다른 조각난 공간들로 비춰진다. 이 공간은 나 자신의 공간인 동시에 타자와 연결된 통로인 것이다. 이 모든 길들이 연결되어 지금 현재 작업하고 있는 제주도로 중첩되어 만난다. 제주현대미술관 창작스튜디오에서 머무르 며 경험한 시간은 그 어느 때보다도 나에게 있어서 내면의 자아와 만나는 기회가 되었다. 「봉인된 시간_현재(Sealed Eternity_ Present)」 작품은 거울에 제주의 산과 하늘과 바다의 형상이 새겨져 있다. 거울에 투명하게 새겨진 모습은 의식과 무의식의 경 계에서 허구와 실재의 사이의 경계를 무너뜨린다. 그리고 단지 허구의 세계가 아닌 현실을 바라보게 되는 도구가 되기도 한다. 2층에 설치된 「봉인된 시간_삶(Sealed Eternity_Life)」의 작품은 저지오름에서 촬영한 일몰과 일출의 2개의 영상으로 구 성된다. 양쪽 벽면으로 거울에 의해 투사되고 반사되는 이 영상은 인간의 탄생과 죽음의 알레고리적 상징이다. 인생의 주어진 시간 속에서 삶과 죽음은 무엇보다 극명한 진리이다. 우리는 죽음을 부정할 수 없다 하지만 이렇게 명백한 사실을 대부분의 사 람들은 망각한 채로 살아갈 때가 많다. 유한한 인간임을 상기시켜 주는 시간은 인간에 있어서 삶을 살아가는 하나의 통로일 것 이다. 어둠과 밝음의 끝없는 반복 속에서 우리의 영원할 것 같은 삶에 대한 반성적 사고를 유도한다. 전시장 입구에 들어서면 천정에 끝없이 새겨진 오메가와 전시장을 나가면서 바닥에 놓여진 알파를 만난다. 이것은 인간인 소우주를 상징하는 동시에 온 우주를 담고 있다. 하나의 통로처럼 연결된 「봉인된 시간_Å, Ω (Sealed Eternity_ Å, Ω)」은 시작 에서 끝이 아닌 또 다른 새로운 시작인 것이다. 봉인된 시간 (Sealed Eternity)속에서 과거, 현재, 미래 동시에 살고 있는 우리는 자신의 생각에 의해 지배되고 있는 시간을 해제함으로써 유일한 삶을 다시 한번 되돌아보는 기회를 가져보길 희망한다.

Two Passages ● Art appreciation is more than its defined properties. It requires further and deeper exploration than just looking at a work of art and forming an opinion of the work. In that sense, it is analogous to a journey. While looking at an artwork, viewers might experience that they become very sensuous. At that moment, viewers become a companion for the journey sharing the thoughts, feelings, and experience expressed in the artwork. The journey is a passage. Its ultimate goal is to find the original source. In other words, it is the very pathway to the moment that one can face one's self. In that aspect, artwork can be an attractive invitation for a journey. Each of the contributing artists marked on the envelope of the invitation using their own unique formative languages. ● Oh, Soon-Mi presents a journey for an implicative moment by taking viewers to experiment dynamic illusions. Order and disorder are symbolized as 'cosmos' and 'chaos' in Oh's installation pieces. The dynamic images of the two are gathered as a higher order in a shape of a 'fractal.' While looking into a mirror that reflects the images of 'chaos in order' and 'order in chaos' in one space, viewers soon find that they are also projected through the mirror. They become aware that their fragmented-self is systematic and symbolized, and subsequently, experience a freedom led by an ambiguity. Viewers will come to recognize that the fragments of one's self are integrated into one in the time of thoughts, and that it is one's true self. The freedom that one can experience through Oh's works is like a withdrawal into dreams or oriental-style meditation. While passing through Oh's spatio-temporal spaces, viewers would find at some point of time that the analytical spaces turned into personal spaces. It is an experimentation of the dynamics in the space where abstract concepts and tangible mirrors are put together. In the space of time and thoughts, the world slowly reveals its true nature, i.e. a bigger and higher order that directs the flexible and coincidental process of fragmentation and creation. ■ Yang, Dong-Hoon

In my previous works, I presented a contemplation between reality and fiction through infinite space; my new work Sealed Eternity expands on my own story ranging over the past, present, and future. In the work "Sealed Eternity_Past", the journey to the past begins by engraving the journey from the cradle to the present time in the mirror; this work brings my memories back to life. The memories meet in a point from the past to the present. The work listens to my past that was unsettled for a long time, looking back on each path one by one. The endless paths spread in all directions in the mirror, come up as a ray of light, and are reflected as other shattered spaces. The spaces serve as not only my own places, but also passages connected to other people. Since all the paths are interconnected, they meet in Jeju-do, overlapping with each other where I am working now. The experiences given to me while I stayed in the Art Studio at Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art provided me with better chances to encounter my inner self than ever before. The work "Sealed Eternity_Present" bears the images of mountains, the sky, and the sea in Jeju in the mirror. The images carved in the mirror transparently lift the boundary between reality and fiction on the edge of consciousness. It can also play the role of an instrument to face up to reality instead of fiction. The work "Sealed Eternity_Life", displayed on the 2nd floor, consists of two videos: sunset and sunrise, taken on Jeoji Oreum. They are projected and reflected by mirrors, which signifies an allegorical symbol of birth and death. Life and death are a fact of life. No one can avoid death. However, most people often forget this obvious truth in their daily lives. The time that reminds people of their mortality can be a passage of life to humanity. In addition, it induces reflective thinking on our lives, which are likely to be immortal in an endless repetition of dark and light. When visitors enter and leave the entrance of the exhibition hall, they can see omega (Ω) carved on the ceiling endlessly and alpha (Å) on the floor respectively. This pattern not only symbolizes a little cosmos referring to a man, but it also contains the entire universe. The work "Sealed Eternity_ Å, Ω", which is connected like a passage shows that it is the new beginning not the end. I hope that we who are living in the past, present, and future can take time to look back on our only life by canceling time controlled by our thoughts. ■ OHSOONMI
