이 전시를 위해 나는 베르사유 궁전 전시 이후 발전시켜온 누드를 다양한 관점에서 다시 접근했다. 누드는 시간을 초월하는 영원불변의 소재이다. 하지만 사실은 시대에 따라 우리가 몸을 인식하는 방법과 몸을 보여주는 방법이 바뀌기 때문에, 누드는 미묘하게 특정 시대와 관련되어 있는 소재기도 하다. 우리 시대의 누드를 보여주기 위해서 나는 나무, 화학섬유, 브론즈, 알루미늄 등 다양한 소재와, 금속주조, 제분, 주형 등 다양한 방법을 썼다. 나는 사실주의 안에서 다양한 각도로 누드를 이해하고자 하였으며, 조각과 추상적이고 단순한 모양의 주추의 새로운 조합을 끊임없이 탐구하였다. 미술작품은 우리의 머릿 속에 있는 생각이 현실로 초청받아 구체적 형상으로 나온 것이다. 아이디어가 이 세상에서 형태를 취해 예술작품으로 인정 받으면, 그 미술작품을 통해 우리는 우리가 누구인지, 우리 몸이 무엇인지에 대해 더 잘 이해할 수 있게 된다. ■ 자비에 베이앙

The series of nudes was developed after LaFemmenue created in 2009 for the show at the Palace of Versailles. The naked body should be the most permanent and timeless image of the human, as it does not bear the marks of a specific era. Actually, the nude is linked in a mysterious way to a special epoch because of our changing perception of the body and of the way we are actually showing the body. To represent the nude of my era, I have used many combinations of material (wood, carbon fiber, bronze, aluminum...) and various processes (foundry, machine milling, molding...). I also worked on nudes at different levels of realism and on a new combination of minimal and abstract shapes, both for the sculptures and their plinths and bases. Art works are guests arriving from our spirits to the reality: once they managed to take form and to achieve some legitimacy to the world, they give us a better understanding of what we are, bodies. ■ Xavier Veilhan
